Centerpieces

March 19th, 2010 @ 12:17 pm by Mrs. Taco

Fussing over centerpieces seems like the cool new ulcer-inducing thing for us brides. It helps immensely (i.e., keeps me sane) to remember my inspiration and my vision: feathers, Deco, branches, burgundy. Classic, beautiful things to match a classic, beautiful venue.

Our venue is decidedly indoors, but who says you can’t bring the outdoors in? Art Deco takes a lot of its inspiration from the outdoors: stylized gazelles and forest scenes are big. Behold the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, Ca., an Art Deco masterpiece:

More photos are here (scroll through with the arrows) That is the lobby, and it’s designed to be a stylized forest scene. The thing in the middle is a waterfall, but there’s no water, obviously. The terra-cotta columns are trees, but they’re not real, right? The light (the light!) is simulated sunlight. And, yes, their electric bill comes out to $9,000+ every month.

The ceiling is a dark green canopy, and curled details on the carpet are meant to be fallen leaves and branches. These are hints/shadows of things that complete a unified picture once they’re all together. I want that.

Given my penchant for this old-timey look (I fail at trends) flowering branches and feathers sounded like a great idea for our reception wonderland.

With the help of our florist, Amy Burke, I ran with the idea of manzanita branches, ostrich feathers, duck feathers and tall burgundy calla lilies to provide just the right element of the-outdoors-in.

Here are some design inspirations that caught my eye in a search:

The great thing about inspiration is that you can make it all your own. Though I thought it would freak me out, it’s nice to see that the exact image I have in my mind’s eye isn’t anywhere on Google Images. I can’t wait to see what Amy comes up with.

Will your centerpieces mimic a theme or place you love?

Oooh I love branches as centerpieces - I wanted to use them too but they didn’t work with our venue (it’s an ornate mansion). Luckily being from Louisville I can use mint julep cups - they’re cute and they represent what our city is known for.

We’re on a fairly small budget, so there’s not alot of wiggle room as far as flowers for centerpieces. Luckily, the reception venue we chose includes a glass bowl filled with white tea roses for each table, and that with some candles, etc provided by us is enough for me. Your ideas are gorgeous though!

We’re having Mr. L’s aunt do our flowers so we’re not going to do anything complicated. But I loved a single type of flower in a vase with 3 separate vases so we may go that route.

@camrie: I had to look up mint-julep cups to see what you were talking about! Very good idea, and a nice shoutout to your city. Silver?

@Miss Lace: A friend went almost that exact same route and it turned out beautifully.

Oh oh, I should note that we’re going halfsies on the centerpieces: some will be branches and calla lilies, and some will be branches and feathers. The cheap feathers definitely offset the more expensive callas, so mixing things up is also a great way to keep costs down!

@Miss Taco: Yep we’re using silver in three sizes. One tall in the center and two smaller on either side. I think they’ll be cute with a bunch of roses in them. I’ve seen that idea several places.

i just switched back to possibly entertaining the idea of having floral centerpieces. just one flower type, nothing too fancy and totally diy-able.

I love the look of the branches - especially if you can suspend candles from them somehow.
