Mrs. Turtle's Picture
Mrs. Turtle, Central California Age and Occupation: 21, Art Student/Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, English Student Engagement Date: August 16, 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Mr. Turtle's Grandparents' backyard, Arroyo Grande, CA About Me: I am a California girl who loves the beach and the mountains, but is quite satisfied living right in the middle where I can enjoy the best of both worlds. I am happiest when traveling to faraway places, wandering through museums, watching old movies, or baking up a storm. Mr. Turtle and I are high school sweethearts and fellow book nerds who both drive Mini Coopers and are most likely to be found browsing in antique stores. We're having so much fun planning our European garden wedding with a vintage twist and can't wait to share more of life's adventures together!
About Mrs. Turtle

One of the earliest decisions I made regarding our wedding was to use some kind of unique, vintage vases for our reception centerpieces. Shortly before we got engaged, I had started to collect hobnail milk glass. (Mr. Turtle even gave me the “wedding jar” piece to add to my collection on the night he proposed.) So between the sentimental value and the fact that it is white, I decided pretty quickly to use milk glass for our wedding! With this in mind, I began adding to my collection whenever I spotted a piece I liked for a good price at an antique store. When my mom heard about my growing collection, she began to scour eBay, randomly surprising me with more pieces! My personal collection still consists of my beloved hobnail pattern (the ones with the little bumps on them!), but in order to expand the collection for the wedding, my mom and I also added a lot of pieces we’ve liked that are not hobnail.

First the collection filled up my hope chest, (the one from the proposal). Eventually it grew to dominate our dining room. Oops! Here it is in all its glory:

Obviously some of the pieces (butter dishes, salt & pepper shakers, etc.) won’t be of much use for centerpieces, but some of my collection is not for the wedding, just for fun! All of the vessels that are vase/bowl-like are the ones I’m picturing with flowers in them.

I cut flowers all the time and put them in milk glass bud vases in my room. I love the simplicity of how this looks. The clean white form of the vase really accentuates the beauty of the bloom. They’re pretty, but not extravagant or over the top. Here are a few pictures of the flowers that make me smile at home:

I have a picture in my head of what I would like the centerpieces to look like, but I’ve had trouble finding inspiration pictures to represent it. Often, milk glass arrangements look too country for my taste, but I’ve seen it look very feminine and sophisticated, and that’s what I’m going for. Here are some examples I’ve found of flower arrangements in milk glass vases that I like:

(Photos from Style Me Pretty, but I Photoshopped the flowers pink (they were white) in the two pictures on the right.)

So, this was part one in my effort to gather my centerpiece inspiration. Next up: an addition to the milk glass!

Is anyone else using milk glass vases? If you have any inspiration pics, please share!

I’m using milkglass and vintage teacups. I have a lot of the same milkglass pieces as you! Does it bother you that some of the milkglass pieces are more translucent than others? I really like the ones that are opaque white vs. the more translucent ones. Do you think it’s okay to mix them up? Will anyone notice other than me?!

We’re not using milkglass, but that doesn’t mean I’m not drooling over your collection right now. ;)

Very cute! The first photo from Style Me Pretty looks like flowers in a giant golf ball! I purchased (but didn’t use in our wedding-wrong color) a green (jadeite) hobnail cake stand I had seen in some Martha Stewart or wedding spread. I got it from L.E. Smith Glass Co. for a song (they were having a sale). So if you (or any other brides!) need more milk glass, check them out!

PS: Which is the wedding jar??

You have an amazing collection so far :) We used milk glass as a way to honor my grandmother. She had collected milk glass her whole life and wasn’t going to be able to attend our wedding due to health reasons…so since she couldn’t be there, her collection (that had survived a house fire) was. We added in thrift store finds to her existing collection and I still have a hard time not picking up new pieces when I see them in antique stores. So, I think it’s really fun that you already love it and will enjoy using it outside of your wedding as well!

@Jamielee: I prefer the opaque ones too, but I think it’s totally fine to mix them up! If you’re using a variety of milk glass vases, it is already going to be a more eclectic look, so it totally works!
@Little Flapper: The engagement frame is from Kohl’s! I bought it a while ago though, so I don’t know if they still have it.
@eileen marie: The wedding jar is the taller one in the center picture on the second row down!
@ggsb: What a special way to include your grandma! How sweet! :)

Wow! You’re lucky to have started the collecting early on. It surely took some time. I love milkglass, too. I wish I would have incorporated it into my wedding, but I only had one or two pieces at the time. It’s so sweet and femenine with JUST the right vintage touch.
