Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

Charmed, I’m Sure

March 22nd, 2010 @ 12:15 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

My latest wedding inspiration comes from an unlikely source – a Christmas gift given to one of my friends by her sister. BM LC’s sister made her family personalized wine charms for Christmas. I liked them so much that I decided they are a must for our winery wedding! I am thinking of using them as escort card holders, like Mrs. Penguin did at her wedding:

I would attach the wine charm escort cards to the wine glasses provided by our venue, and set them up on a table by the entrance. Guests could then locate their table based on the escort card. I like the idea of having them as escort cards, that way they serve two purposes: to guide guests to their tables and to keep track of their wine glasses! They’ll also be a nice way to incorporate our wedding colors. Conversely, if that sounds too confusing, I could simply use them as place cards at the tables.*

Wine charms are pretty easy to make, and will be the perfect solution to my DIY itch. I’d like to make them a little more elaborate than the ones pictured above. I’m thinking something along these lines:

Charmed, I’m Sure : wedding pleasanton 316 3

My only concern is this: will people think the glass is theirs to keep because their name is attached to it? I doubt it, but there’s always the chance that a few guests will think the entire thing is a favor. What do you think? Would you think the entire glass was yours to take home? How would you prevent people from taking the whole thing?

*Yes, escort cards and place cards are two different things. Ah the things one learns when planning a wedding. Escort cards have the guest’s name and table numbers, “escorting” the guests to their tables, whereas place cards indicate the guests’ place at the table, once they get there.

I think this is a great idea! I’ve never seen it done before, and it’s something they can keep and use after the wedding.

Such a cute idea! I don’t think people will think the whole thing is a favor since I assume they will be filling the wine glass with a beverage and that would make it a messy thing to take home with them!

Really cute. I think at first I might assume the whole thing is a favor but I would ask someone before taking it. You could write a note on the back of the escort card saying please enjoy the wine charm.

Why don’t you just not attach them to the glasses? You could have one example and maybe a sign with instructions. Then the guests could attach them to their own glasses, or if not drinking wine that night, pocket them to take home!

Good point Trail Mix. At worst, maybe only a few would still take it. But if it wasn’t engraved, that would probably be another clue.

I love this idea & I’m going to do a similar take on it myself. Are you making the entire charm yourself? If so, have you found a good source for the wire & beads? I’m still searching for the most reasonable place to purchase my supplies.

I could definitely see people thinking the entire glass is the favor. I like JF’s idea.

If they used the glasses to drink from, then they couldn’t take it for open container laws, right? Maybe if your bridal party mentioned it, and helped spread the word, then it would prevent people. Such a cute idea, though.

I would definitely think to take the entire thing as a favor. But I would find it a lil odd to walk to my table with an empty glass in hand in the first place. I think that the charm itself w/o the glass is a lovely (and less cumbersome/confusing) idea.

I won’t lie…I would definitely be one of those people walking off with the glass because I thought the whole thing was a favor. Sometimes with wine tastings wineries will let you take the glass…I guess that’s why I would think that!

I would say have the charms alone as escort cards. And include text that say ‘Enjoy the wine charm’.

I too would think the whole thing is a favor! Signs that it is not is needed!

I would also think the entire thing was a favor!

We didn’t have a problem with people pocketing the glasses… if you’re worried, perhaps ask your venue what their glass replacement cost would be. Sometimes it’s like $1 a glass and not a big deal… (our venue didn’t even have a cost for this… they knew glasses would go missing/broken and it was kind of added in the cost, but I’m pretty sure no one took their glass home).

Good point - just in case. I probably wouldn’t take the glass. Or attach them and put a sign to remind them to detach their charm from the venue’s glasses at the end of the night.

I like the idea of just displaying the charms without the glasses. On the same table, you can have a few glasses demonstrating how the charms are supposed to be used. Too many people I know would be taking the glass home with them otherwise.

Maybe put a sign above the escort cards that says ‘please enjoy these charmed favours’, or some such thing. When I first saw your picture I definitely thought the glass was part of the favour. Let us know what you decide!

If the tags were attached, I would assume the glass to be a favor. I would be unsure how to transport it home as well…do I just drop the charm in my purse and hope it survives? I would prefer to receive them in a box so that I could keep them safe and store them between uses (and it would stop me from the humiliation of finding out I accidently stole a glass)
