Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.
About Mrs. Veggie

I’ve talked about Mr. Veggie’s outfit, the veggie dudes’, and the bridesmaids’. I’ve posted about the veggie sprouts. But, I haven’t talked much yet about my dress. Maybe I’ve been avoiding the subject because it is steeped in inner conflict. Let me set the scene.

A well-intentioned me sits at my computer surfing the web for wedding ideas. On one of my shoulders (shall we say the left shoulder) sits a beautiful eco angel. She whispers encouraging words in my ear and fills my head with lovely wedding-day dreams. A petroleum-covered slug sits on the other. The eco angel is winning the battle. She is armed with our electronic save-the-dates, our local and organic inspired menu, and our beautiful travel-minimizing venue. But the petro-slug isn’t done yet. He has an armament too. What card could he possibly hold that might pull me out of my eco wedding bliss?

He has Lazaro LZ3700.

Oooh. Pretty. So very, very pretty.

But eco angel, you have your own armament of eco-friendly wedding dresses, right? Please tell me you do.

Uh-huh.

Note to designers: not all hippies want fairies and toadstools on their wedding gowns. Some do, but I don’t. And, not all eco brides want to turn their wedding into the renaissance festival. And furthermore, I appreciate that many eco-friendly brides are going for a casual look. And, usually I would be right there with them. But this is my one and only day to leave the Birkenstocks behind and feel all glammed up. And I want to go for it. Isn’t there any designer who understands that eco doesn’t have to mean hippie-casual? Is there any eco designer who has braved the elegant couture bridal scene? Can I have eco and elegant?

Yes. Says Adele Wechsler.

The Sunray.

The Haze.

Swoon. Let me try one of those puppies on. Stat.

Oh yeah, we live in New Zealand. No such luck.

Do you know of any smaller wedding dress designers that focus on eco-friendly materials?

My friend had a very eco-friendly wedding, with a heavy focus on recycling. Her husband wore a suit made out of fabric from recycled water bottles. She wore a tie dress. Like this: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29006914

This doesn’t seem to be what you’re going for, but I thought I’d share anyway. It was a beautiful dress, creative and earthy, and fit with her wedding perfectly. ;-)

You have really beautiful taste in wedding dresses! And I totally see what you mean with most eco friendly dresses having a hippie, casual vibe. Which is beautiful, but not the only option!

Miss Veggie, as being from the southern end of the world myself, I feel your pain about not being able to try these dresses on.. I wonder tho, if you can purchase a preloved dress i.e. worn once because that is ‘eco- friendly according to this website here:

http://www.celebrationstudio.co.nz/weddings-ecoweddings

is that a loop-hole?

Yeah I was just going to suggest getting a pre-owned dress.. :) Have you checked any of the websites that sell pre-owned to see if they have those styles?

I was going to suggest the same as Amberdawn, hae you considered getting a preowned dress? I am selling mine! Regardless, try those sites (www.oncewed.com, etc) and you could get the best of both worlds without doing any additional environmental damage. :)

this designer is local to Austin, TX… I saw something on the news about her I think, but all of her dresses are eco friendly, handmade, and affordable compared to most designer gowns, you might check it out.

http://mycorset.com/

the website seems a little ugly to me, but I’m sure her contact info and some examples are there for you to look at.

Good luck!

I’m joining the used dress bandwagon. Unless you have something against it, or specifically want to support an eco designer, pre-owned is the least environmentally damaging route you’re going to be able to find.

Olivia luca uses eco fabrics and purchases carbon credits to offset shipping costs.

As noted above, pre-owned dress is a very eco option. You can also completely alter it yourself (or ask a seamstress) to have the design you want but use all the material from the pre-owned dress. FYI, Mrs. Mouse was also in the similar line of thinking when it comes to having an eco dress.

I think Mrs.Meatball’s dress was made by an eco-friendly designer, but I can’t remember the name…

Classic wedding dilemma (good vs evil) - can’t wait to see what you decided on!

Buying a pre-owned dress or sourcing responsibily-produced fabrics and having them locally made would be a good idea. I like being able to support small businesses / artisans and made my dress at a hole-in-the-wall place.

look for a used version of the ones you love so much! re-using would be eco friendly AND save you dolla dolla bills.
