Latest Obsession: Antique Silver

March 22nd, 2010 @ 10:25 am by Mrs. Turtle

So originally, I was 100% about the milk glass for our centerpieces, but I started thinking that I wanted to supplement them with something else for a more eclectic look. While flipping through Domino: The Book of Decorating, I spotted this little detail in one of the rooms:

Um, hello missing piece! Thanks again, Domino! (P.S. I miss you!) I’ve always loved silver, but I had never really thought about combining it with milk glass. After seeing this picture, I am determined to make it work! I love silver and I love milk glass. So really, this is just me, approaching our wedding style in the same way that I do my personal style or my decorating style. Instead of letting myself get stuck in a matchy box, with swatch cards always in hand, I choose to combine everything I’m drawn toward, random things that make my heart happy. I’ve never designed a wedding, but this usually seems to work for me. So I guess I’m crossing my fingers! Hopefully our wedding style will be totally unique and representative of the Turtles’ tastes, rather than one big sloppy mess.

Here are some pictures of flowers in silver containers that I just love and have gathered along the way:

Anyway, much like the milk glass, I have also begun a silver collection. I’m happy to collect silver because I think that it is extremely versatile and can be combined with a wide range of colors and styles. A lot of the milk glass (especially the pieces that aren’t in the hobnail pattern), I will probably sell off or give away after the wedding, but I can’t imagine parting with this silver. I will totally use it all over our house, for holding flowers and for entertaining.

I took these pictures of my collection a couple months ago. Believe it or not, it’s actually grown quite a bit since then:

I’m loving all of our silver and can’t wait to see all the little vases filled with pink flowers at our wedding!

Are any of you using unique or antique centerpiece vases? Where have you gone to collect them?

Seriously, where do you store all of this stuff? I love the silver collection, where have you been getting these pieces? What are the average prices? I can imagine silver is a more expensive collection than milk glass.

love it!! so pretty

have you also considered mercury glass/old vintage look to use with the pink flowers?

you can find decent repros now at crate and barrel and the like, since the real stuff can get $$

Whoa, between the milk glass and silver collections, where do you have room in your house for anything else?? Hahaha, love the idea, it’s going to look great!

You have quite the collection going! A little Bar Keepers Friend, and these beauties will be ready to go.

Love the inspirational photos - especially with hydrangeas. Gorgeous.

As mentioned numerous times above - what a collection! And to think this is just for centerpieces! Can’t wait to see what else is in store!

Like many other brides, I am using tea cups as centrepieces. Most are on loan from family members, but I have collected a few of my own from second hand stores.

If we don’t have enough tea cups, then we’re going to paint old teapots and milk pitchers silver and gold for accent pieces.

I’m also collecting a few little swans, since ‘Swan’ is going to be my new last name. These will be used sparingly, since I don’t want a swan overload in our wedding (or in real life).

The silver with the milk glass looks awesome. So elegant.

We did the silver centerpiece thing. I found all of ours either on ebay, local antique stores, Salvation Army, etc. My limit was no more than $10 for the bigger pieces, and $5 for the smaller ones. We had one coffeepot or teapot at every table, with 3-5 suger/creamers and other containers around it. I still have them all so if anyone wants my collection, let me know! We had 10 tables I think.

I think the combo with the milk glass is uh-maz-ing.

Thanks for the encouragement about the milk glass/silver combination! A few people I know have been unsure about it, so these comments are definitely giving me a much needed boost of confidence! :)

@slicey19: @Miss Trail Mix: Good question! As much as I love this stuff, I kind of can’t wait to be done with it! I’ve tried to incorporate some of it throughout my house as vases and such so it blends in, but a lot of it is in boxes in the garage and my parents’ dining room! It’s taking over our lives!!
@yummyducky66: The whole collection has come from a combination of eBay, antique stores, and flea markets. It’s been a lot cheaper than it looks. We only buy pieces that we find for great deals! My mom is responsible for the eBay pieces and the ones from antique stores and flea markets were found by me and Mr. Turtle. We love antique stores!

@Mrs Vino: I LOVE mercury glass! We’re using some mercury glass candle holders, but even at stores like Crate and Barrel, it costs a lot more than the deals I’ve found at antique stores and flea markets!
@MerryMary: Your centerpieces sound amazing! Teacups are so cute. And I love that your last name is going to be Swan!
