About Mrs. French Fries

Shop-portunities.

March 22nd, 2010 @ 2:08 pm by Mrs. French Fries

It seems as though, when planning a wedding, once you cross one item off of your list, five more crop up in its place. One of my newest items to figure out? What the heck to wear for our engagement pictures.

Yes, ’tis true — we’ve been engaged for 18 months and we haven’t had our engagement pictures taken yet. Well, actually my sister took one set right when we were first engaged, and they turned out fabulously. Want to see a couple?

Yep, I told you — they’re awesome. So, with this one e-pics session behind us, we weren’t really super focused on doing another one. But since our wedding day photographer included this in our package (and since we really do need to get more comfortable being in front of a camera) I think our second e-pics session will be good practice for our wedding day. You know, if only we could figure out what the heck to wear.

We’re having them at the end of April, and the weather in Wisconsin at that time can be… variable. It could be 70 and sunny; it could be 40 and windy and spitting sleet. I know that we want to have one more “formal” look and one more “casual” look. I’ve figured out that for casual look we’ll probably be in jeans, t-shirts, and sandals (if it’s not sleeting, of course). This is pretty standard “us” apparel, so I’m not really worried about what I’ll wear for this portion — probably my favorite jeans, a t-shirt that I pick up along the way somewhere, and my comfy sandals from American Eagle. (Yep, I rock the same footwear that 13-year-old girls do. What up.)

It’s the other portion of our program—the more “formal” portion––that’s throwing me for a loop. I’ve looked high and low for a cute dress to wear (preferably one that could work double duty as a dress for my bridal shower) and I’ve struck out. I want something springy, possibly with a slight pattern, that fits me well. Oh, and I’d really prefer for it to be affordable — under $100 would be ideal, but if it’s the right dress and I can use more than once, I’d consider stretching the budget. The other problem? Everything I’ve seen is either too matronly (I look like I’m a 45-year-old woman) or too much like something out of Seventeen Magazine (I look like I’m channeling Miley Cyrus). I’m at a loss.

So, hive… I turn to you — what are your clothing standbys when you need to find something cute? I’m finding that the more I look for something to wear, the harder it is to find it. Isn’t it always the case? When you’re not looking you’ll find 800 fabulous things that you really don’t need. But when you need to find something, you strike out left and right. It’s Murphy’s Law for shopping.

What are you wearing for your e-pics?

I think if you do a dress + coat combi, with a scarf or shawl that could be added/removed as needed, you would get quite a lot of mileage!

I’m a big believer in mixing and matching price and style. So for a gorgeous outfit, I’ll find a statement piece (be it a dress, blouse, cardi, etc) from a more unique store like Anthropologie, layer it with clothes and accessories from somewhere more affordable like Forever 21 or J. Crew sale pieces, and then find a pair of statement shoes to really pull it all together.

I had a rally difficult time picking something out as well (to be more specific…3 days of “after work” shopping sprees).

My photographer had all these suggestions of what not to wear and what to wear etc but at the end of the day you HAVE to wear something you are comfortable in, something YOU love and something that is YOU.

If i could do it again I would just pick something I already own. Something light and then a cute jacket, this way i can take the jacket off for varying weather etc.

Here is a link to what i ended up wearing. On a side note..it was FREEZING that day…i wish i had a jacket :)

Hit up the anthropologie sales for a cute dress in a fun color/print! You can always pair it with tights and a jacket if it is cold.

Call me cheap (no really, I don’t mind), but my go-to places are Target, Old Navy, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. If I really feel like splurged I head to The Limited.

I’m taking my e-pics today and it snowed 5 inches last night - brr! For my casual look, I’m wearing a cute grey turtle next with a pair of jeans and black heels. For my more formal look, I’m just sporting a dress I have in my closet since I’m like you - shopping did not prevail! Let’s see how it turns out!

I’m having the same problem you are! We’ve been engaged for well over a year and no photos yet! I think we’ll do them in a few months so we can have a warm, summery backdrop.

Hi! I am getting a dress made by janebonbon on etsy and she does a custom dress to your measurements and you can choose the fabric for about $90.00. Try her out!!

We didn’t do e-pic, but Anthropologie (which you can find on ebay for a decent price) is a real go-to.

I’ve worn the 2nd dress to so many events-my coctail bridal shower, weddings, and so on. A good dress is worth the investment! You can even “dress up” a great dress with some fab heels, bag or jewelery.

I love colors that pop in e pics. For cute dresses I always head to forever 21, H&M and nordstrom. Between those I can usually find something.

I had always wanted a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress, so I figured e-pics were a perfect excuse to finally get around to buying one! And I went the ebay route so didn’t pay full price (I paid around $135 with shipping and everything).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! :) I appreciate it!

@Baileyh: Super cute pictures!

@eileen marie: Thanks for the ebay links! I’ll have to check out some of the auctions for Anthropologie stuff that are going on.

@hisbunny: YAY!!! :) That made me smile when I read it — good to know that not everyone holds hands the “traditional” way! :) Also, you both are too cute (clicked over to your blog)!
