Hair Trial, Part II

March 23rd, 2010 @ 12:51 pm by Mrs. Paisley

I wrote about my hair trial already, but only had one photo to show you. Now I’m back with the rest of the pictures, courtesy of Papa Paisley’s camera and photo emailing skills!

Here are a couple of my inspiration photos to show what I was hopin’ for:

And:

And here is my hair, all fresh in the salon:

Sorry for the funny face, I wasn’t exactly ready for the photo when MOH Paisley snapped that picture.

Here’s the back view:

It’s pretty, but a lot curlier than I’d hoped, too much wax was used, and it wasn’t the unstructured look I wanted. It was partly my fault, because my stylist kept asking me how close to my head to start the curl, and I was a little indecisive.

“Ummm, hmm. There? [pointing to the crown]“

She asked for my direction a LOT. Which was good in a sense, but I wasn’t prepared enough, especially when it came to the back. I had no back-view picture to provide her any guidance.

After I came home, I Googled away and found this photo of Taylor Swift’s side-swept ‘do from the back. I wish I’d had this photo to show the stylist!

She did a great job with the makeup, I thought. It was also wonderful how I only got two or three hours’ sleep the night before my hair/makeup trial. Haha. Well, it did mean she got to work with a fairly accurate representation of what my sleep-deprived face will look like on the actual wedding day! (If I can’t sleep before a freakin’ HAIR trial, chances are I won’t be able to fall asleep the day before my wedding.)

Amazingly, here is what it looked like about 10 hours later when my dad took some pictures before I hit the hay at 11 p.m.:

I also spent 5 hours doing yard work that day. One thing’s for sure, this hair has staying power!

I think the stylist is nice, talented, and an incredibly good deal. The makeup and hair trial cost only $25 (half off). And since my bridesmaids all decided to get their hair done here (the $40 price won them over), that means my hair and makeup on the big day will be free!

Plus they’ll serve us coffee, doughnuts, and mimosas. ‘Nuf said. We are sticking to this salon, even if my hair looks like a poodle.

My wedding is in Lake County, meaning this rural county has two options for hair and makeup: this place, or paying like $800 to have somebody from Napa or Sonoma County drive over and do it.

But, I’m thinking of having another hair trial to try to get a less curly look. And trying to get a looser, fuller look to the back, like the photo of Taylor Swift above.

If I do, I’ll try to plan it around a day when I can go out someplace fancy, instead of going to grandma’s with MOH Paisley and doing yard work like I did after this first hair trial:

I’m currently on the hunt for photos of side-swept half-up ‘dos, especially the back views, so if you have any/know of any, please send the links my way! Muchas gracias!

Have you had two hair trials in order to achieve the perfect look? Were you glad you did it?

I think it looks nice but I see what you mean about it being too curly. See if the stylist can use a larger curling iron. It looks like maybe she is using a 1”. If she used 2” or larger I think the curls would look more loose.

She did a great job, and clearly has talent even if it’s not quite what you expected. I have a good feeling she’ll be able to get your hair exactly how you want! Now, I’m off to see if I can help find some hair pictures for you. :)

I think it looks great! I’m sure she can make the curls a little looser and it will be even better!!

I’m going to have a second hair trial as well. My first one was with a stylist who is the cousin of a friend, and I didn’t know going into the trial that she was in training. I might have been okay with that if the trial had gone perfectly, but she ended up having to get help from her fellow stylists to create the look I wanted. I wasn’t asking for anything that complicated! So now I’ve booked an appointment with the owner of a proper salon (recommended by my future sister in law) for a second trial. I hope it goes well!

I agree with you, definitely do another trial, and take more photos with you.. it needs to look more.. natural I guess. It still looks good, it just doesn’t look *right*

Maybe ask for more of a wavy style and less curls? It is so tricky trying to articulate what you want to a stylist!

10 hours later, your curls looked more relaxed!! Ditto to amariem25, maybe a larger barrel will soften the curls?

these are beautiful! but i agree, the curls are wayyyyy too tight. maybe the two of you didn’t realize your hair would hold a curl so well. maybe less product and a bigger barrel iron?

I understand the next to no choice problem. I got married in a small town where there wasn’t much choice for hair and no choice for makeup. I think you can get her to make the hair work. Your makeup is fab. My hair trial in small-town West Virginia was $60. That’s what it cost the day of also.

As someone with naturally curly hair, if you want it to look softer and more natural, two easy changes can be made: 1. Use two or more different sized barrels. If you look at TaySwift’s hair, or someone with naturally curly/wavy hair, you will see that the curls are not all identical. If she introduces some diversity to the curls, it will look softer and more natural. 2.I think the curls in the front especially need to be softened- those should be your biggest curls (loosest), otherwise it will look like Prom 1995! Good luck! I think you’re very close on this!

I think if she brushes the curls out a bit, that will soften them as well! I think the final effect is going to be gorgeous tho!

Um.

That literally looks nothing like your inspiration photo. I would schedule another hair trial STAT. She needs to use a looser barrel curling iron and brush the curls out before she pins them up. What you ended up with is nothing like what you wanted.

I don’t think it does you justice so a 2nd trial should do the trick if you say to her some tips the previous posters mention (switching up size of curls; less curly more wavy). Also for sure bring the pic of TS from the back, the way she pinned it to the side looks *almost* like there is a banana clip in there (remember those from the 80’s) TS’s looks more gathered and not so curly on the head

i liked your hairstyle but after seeing the back of taylor swift’s hair, i get what you mean about the looser, less curls. try another trial to see if the stylist can make it work. i’m sure she’ll be able to if she sees that picture

I got my hair curled for a weddng I went to recently, and though the hair stylist used a small barrel iron she didn’t wrap the ends around the iron. The result? Less ‘perfect’ curls.

Maybe that technique, combined with a slightly larger iron would give you the look that you’re looking for.

I think that your stylist is talented, and by showing her that new picture you found (of TS’s back of the head) she will definitely be able to nail your hair style.

I like how it’s off to the side - that’s how mine is. A very side, messy bun.
