Rehearsal Dinner Venue Search

March 24th, 2010 @ 6:48 pm by Mrs. Argyle

Since the moment Mr. A and I got engaged, we have been racking our brains to find the perfect rehearsal dinner venue. Now, to most couples, this is probably the least of their worries, but we really wanted to find a spot that is unique and/or different, and something very “St. Louis”. There are a lot of places in town where many couples have their rehearsal dinners, but we were looking for something unique.

Choice #1:
The first and obvious choice for us was Sage.

This particular restaurant is a big favorite of mine and Mr. Argyle’s. And, a big plus? They have a large private space on their second level, which is devoted entirely to private events. We loved the idea that we would sort of have our own little party area. Sage was opened a few years ago in the historic Soulard neighborhood in downtown Saint Louis. It looks over the same location where Lynch Street Bistro was housed. The restaurant is literally a 5 minute walk from the front doors of the Anheuser-Busch Tour Center (and, you can trust me—I used to be a tour guide there).

And, on to the food. Oh, man is the food good. It’s pretty American, but they really try to keep it seasonal and local (big bonus). Not to mention, Mr. Argyle loves their chili and tuna, and I’m quite fond of their pulled pork sandwich and Amber Bock onion rings. Now, if I only had pictures to share, because they would so make you hungry. The lunch and dinner menu, although not huge, is filled with deliciousness. As for dessert, they offer little dessert shots. My favorite? Pumpkin gooey butter cake (and for you non-Saint Louisans, here is a little background on Gooey Butter Cake, only one of the best desserts ever).

Choice #2:

Lucas Park Grille. We originally considered this one as one of our top choices, but quickly nixed it considering their dinner menu can be a bit pricey. And, considering all of the fiance’s family and most of his friends would be traveling, our rehearsal dinner guest list is a tad larger than normal. We put this one on the back burner, until not too long ago when I decided to bite the bullet and ask about their availability, and private event menu and capacity. One of the bonuses for this restaurant is its location—it’s down the street from our reception venue, which means it’s only about 4 miles from each of the hotels we picked. The downside? Washington Ave. gets pretty busy on the weekends, making the parking situation less-than-ideal.

Choice #3:

The last choice? Canyon Cafe. While it is a local restaurant, there are a few around the U.S. (so some of you may have eaten there before). They serve a great menu of Southwestern food. AND they have some of the best margaritas – so much so, that they limit you two 2, they’re that good (and that heavy on the alcohol). This place is practically a staple on the list of places my college girlfriends and I meet up at. The best part? They have a little room you can use for parties, which was a must-have when choosing our rehearsal dinner locale. The only problem was that it wasn’t so close to the hotels we chose.

The Decision?

As luck would have it – they can definitely hold all of us AND it turns out that their private event menu is beyond reasonable (and includes dessert). Plus, they have valet parking, which will make everyone’s lives a tad easier.

It makes me hungry just thinking about this.

Was it important to give your guests a bit of local flavor for your rehearsal dinner? What aspect of your RD  gives it a local flare?

Sounds like a great choice! We are looking for a rehearsal dinner venue in St. Louis as well. Do you mind if I ask how many people you have coming to your rehearsal dinner? That has been our big problem!

Just out of curiosity, what made you decide to nix Sage?

When we lived in STL, we lived in Soulard and we LOVED Sage. I remember them having really good wings…

Just a couple weeks ago we had our rehearsal/out of town guest dinner at Bartolino’s Restaurant attached to the Drury Inn on Hampton Avenue since most of our out-of-town guests were staying at that hotel. We had around 40 people (almost half of our overall wedding guest attendance) because it was important to me to include people who had traveled such a distance (west coast, east coast, midwest, England). That way we could also do dessert/post-dinner entertaining/games in an event room at the hotel.

I had grand hopes of being able to serve pizza from Pi or being at a restaurant that meant a bit more to us as a couple, but convenience won out. The restaurant was also very good at accommodating food allergy issues and allowing guests to choose from a few selections.

@silly rae: Right now the number is at 55, but it might go up!

@SabrinaR424: The Mr. and I LOVE Sage, but we were afraid of not meeting their minimum or it getting too expensive.

@missvintage: They have really good everything, haha!

@saveroomforpi: Nothing wrong with convenience. Bartolinos is delicious! We were opting for places that were convenient or easy to get to, but were also favorites of ours.

MM, just being a STL intruder for the year, I am eating up (pun not quite intended) the little lists of restaurants. Food is my business. :)

I’ve only been to Sage before and was a pretty big fan. I think I need to venture downtown more and check out this Lucas Park Grille place.

Sounds like a great plan for a fun night!

Nice choice! I do love the atmosphere at both Sage and Lucas Park…. but there’s something about LP that I have to agree with you on. I’ve only been there a few times but the lighting especially gets me. The last time I was there a whole bridal party came in and sat down at the bar for a couple of rounds on a Saturday night!

I WANTED to do something like this for the RD but it got completely hijacked by my FIL’s and is now some crazy 100+ person bash at a fancy hotel…ARGH!

Thanks for that post! My Fiance’s mom keeps asking me about the rehearsal dinner and i have NO idea what to tell her. It’s also difficult because they are footing the bill so i don’t want to suggest restaurants way out of their price range. I never knew Lucas park had a private area. Canyon Cafe is my favorite Mexican restaurant!

All the food suggestions make me drool. I still have yet to decide where to host the RD - sigh…

@eimersc: Eat up lady!

@WonderlandPaper: LPG is a great spot on a Friday night for drinks, or even for dinner.

@Lauren: Yes, both are great places to eat!

@Miss Trail Mix: Luckily, since my FMIL is not from town, she left the choosing up to us.

@edoherty24: Oh sure! If you need more suggestions, let me know!

@mrspaetz: I don’t have any pics, but I’m sure the web site does!

We really wanted to have our RD at Schlafly Tap Room but they’re already booked that night for a big party so……my FFIL has insisted that we have it at Bellerive CC. Not my first choice, nor my second, nor my third but he’s paying for it so I’m not going to complain! It’s nice there and they can accommodate my Celiacs disease so it’s good

We initially chose Moxy Bistro in the CWE for our rehearsal dinner but it recently closed (that was a shocking discovery when passing by on a random weekday!). Now we are having it at Sage :) We had also considered Favazza’s (The Rose of the Hill banquet venue), Wildflower (CWE) and Dressel’s (CWE). Other good places would be Bailey’s Chocolate Bar (they have a new event space upstairs from the bar), the Dubliner (downtown) or Sqwires (Lafayette Square).
