The Important Songs

March 24th, 2010 @ 6:23 pm by Mrs. Hot Dog

For me, ALL music is important. It’s the fuel for my day. My mood can change in an instant just by hearing my favorite song. So obviously, this is an important part of the planning process for the mister and me.

We have a song. “This Year’s Love” by David Gray. Never heard it? Have a listen.

I get goose bumps every time I hear it. Every tender emotion I have for Mr. HD comes pouring out of me. *swoon* I knew this song would have to be an important part of the wedding. We just couldn’t decide whether to use it for the processional or for our first dance.

After listening a few times, we both decided it’d be better as a first dance. We want to be able to share a very special moment with our very special song.

The recessional was the easiest song. I knew right away what it was going to be. And H.Dizzle agrees!

I prefer the new Aly & AJ version to Katrina & The Waves because I think the lyrics are a little more crisp. And it feels more fun. :)

WAIT. Hold up a minute. “What about the processional?” Well, we decided to go with “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones.

I just love the instrumentals at the beginning of the song! And Norah Jones’ voice is incredible. We’ll only use the instrumental intro and first few verses, since our aisle isn’t that long. ;)

BUT, we a hit snag. The problem is that I want a different song for when the bridesmaids and groomsmen walk out. That way, when “Come Away With Me” starts, everyone will know it’s my turn. ;) I just can’t decide on a song. I want something that’s a little slow, so that the wedding party isn’t galloping down the aisle. But I also don’t want something too traditional.

My biggest contender is “Say” by John Mayer. The only trouble is that it’s a SMIDGEN too fast… but maybe we can make it work.

So this is where I need some help… I’m open to any and all suggestions! Something contemporary, sweet, slow. I’d love to hear your suggestions!

P.S. Sorry for the video-heavy post! I just thought you had to experience the songs! :)

The boy and I never really had a song and We (I) have been going through all the music i own trying to find a song perfect for my husband and i for our big wedding (military wife) Nothing just seemed, right. Until I remembered this song. It just fit us! =D

Glad someone else enjoyed the song as much as me!!!

LOVE the David Gray, love the other choices. I get what you mean about the John Mayer song. I’m brainstorming some thoughts now… I’ll get back to this one! :) What are your favorite artists? …just for a little guidance in thinking of some suggestions.

hmmm….are you sure you want to walk down the aisle (and back) to songs with lyrics? It seems like such a mish-mash of melodies to all fit into one ceremony. Have you thought about doing just the instrumental parts of the songs rather than the songs with the lyrics in them?

It might sound nice if you stick with one song (instrumental version) for both the BMS and your entrance - to distinguish your entrance you can play the song more powerfully, so the song slowly builds to when you enter then it plays louder.

If you DID want to leave the lyrics in, a good walking down the aisle song that builds kind of on its own is “Falling Slowly” by Glen Hasard and Marketa Irglova: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0lIdr5TsaU

But in the end…it’s really whatever makes you happiest! I agree with what you say about John Mayer though - bit too fast. Other recommendations…Check out some Ray LaMontagne (Shelter, Within You), Mazzy Star (Fade Into You) and Ben Harper (Forever, Angel).

I LOVE LOVE LOVE David Gray! And I LOVE This Year’s Love! “Say Hello Wave Goodbye” and “The One I Love” are up there too.

I love that version of “Walkin on Sunshine” - I’ve never heard it before! We were planning on using the Katrina & the Waves version for our grand entrance at the reception (its one of FI’s favorite songs, and I have fond memories cruising around with him in his car listening to it back in high school.) I might just have to show him this newer version and see if he’d be up for using it instead!

Oh for your wedding party processional…I was in a wedding recently where they used “1,2,3,4″ by the Plain White T’s for us to walk down to. Its a sweet song and was the perfect tempo.

I *totally* wanted to use that David Gray song for our first dance, but the Mr. wasn’t feeling it. That song makes me cry, I swear.

As for your question:

“Sea of Love,” the Cat Power version
“Falling Slowly” the “Once” duo
“You Are the Best Thing,” Ray LaMontagne
“Across the Universe,” the Fiona Apple version

Love the song choices! We got married outside and it was important to me to have contemporary, spiritual songs rather than hymns or instrumentals.
I stole a page from the Hive and walked in to I love NYE.
My suggestions:
Heavenly Day by Patti Griffin — SUCH a gorgeous song. Our moms walked out to it at our wedding.
or
Have a little faith in me by John Hiatt –our groomsmen walked out to that.
My bridesmaids walked out to Cat Power’s Sea of Love. ”

Our recessional was Is this Love by Bob Marley. hahaa.

We still get comments on how great our ceremony music was.

Good luck!

I don’t like John Mayer, except for THAT song-use it-it’s not too fast! All of your songs are perfect. I lurve Katrina & the Waves (don’t know your version). We used all traditional songs, but for the recessional, I chose an instrumental “Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve played by our trio. I could see recognition on most people’s faces and them frantically paging through the program to figure it out! The lyrics-not so much though. (That song is the only thing other than a beach setting-which we didn’t have-that I envisioned for my future nuptials so it was a must have. I heard it for the first time and thought, “I will walk down the aisle one day to THIS song.”)

**I fell in love with “Say” after another Bee posted a wedding highlight video (not hers) with that song in it.

Love the choices so far! I actually like the idea of a transition between “faster” and slower for the processional. The bm’s start by walking down the aisle to John Mayer…and then when Norah Jones comes on it transitions to a more slow and dramatic moment for your big reveal! I think it would actually be pretty cool!

And wait…kind of confused at the comments suggesting “Falling Slowly;” don’t get me wrong - I LOVE that song (it is absolutely beautiful), but the whole story behind the song isn’t really much of a positive one (the guy had been cheated on, etc.). I personally think “Say” is much better suited! :)

Love the choices so far, and I love “Say.” I agree with Buttons about the meaning behind the song “Falling Slowly,” although that song gives me chills and I love it!
