Vellum Wrapped Votives

March 24th, 2010 @ 4:00 pm by Mrs. Lace

I was determined to get some wedding DIYs done this weekend so I whipped out my votives that I purchased from the Salvation Army.

I punched along the top of a piece of vellum and wrapped it around a votive:

Boo. The vellum was too low and didn’t give enough of that warm, glowy effect I was hoping for. So, I moved the vellum up.

Yes, that’s it! BUT, when I tried this with a piece of vellum that reached all the way to the bottom of the votive, it didn’t work. The vellum didn’t meet evenly on the backside, but overlapped upward! My votives aren’t straight cylinders. They are ever-so-slightly smaller on the bottom, but enough so that wrapping a wider sheet of vellum around it would make it plainly clear that this DIY was a bust.

Maybe some people wouldn’t care and most of our guests probably wouldn’t notice either, but I will. I shouldn’t. But I definitely notice. :(

I was going for something like this, which I can do on the bigger glass containers I have.

So, I was off to figure something… anything out. I decided to wrap the entire votive with vellum. I first cut out a curved piece of vellum that would nicely fit around the votive. I stamped it just because it looked so darn plain.

Then I wrapped it and lit it up.

Warm, glowy effect - check. But, I don’t like it. it doesn’t have the same feel as my doily edged votive. So, at the end of that evening, I had nothing done and no solution to my DIY fail.

I decided I could suck it up and just cover the votives completely like pictured above and add something to it, have the vellum only go halfway up the votive, or use some awesome novel idea that I haven’t yet conjured up.

How would you solve this problem? What would be your preferred method for giving our smaller votives that glowy look?

Awesome! Thanks for the idea! I have a ton of vellum that won’t go through my printer - as I wanted to do something like this…I didn’t even think of stamping! Your votives are AWESOME! :)

You could use scalloped scissors to make a nice edge on the top?

I like the stamped one! It has a very warm yet chic personal feel!

what about putting the punch vellum half way up and then doing some ribbon around the bottom part?

What about taking the solid piece and using a stamp, like a heart to punch strategically around the paper. Or a small hole punch and make ‘polka dots’ at the top…

You could do the whole one, but have cut outs.. maybe do your frilly detail along the top, but then have little cut outs mid way, so you can still see flicker, but still get your glow?

Oh, you could also cut the votive covers so that they were straight, so they were tight at the top, and then sat away from the glass at the bottom.. am I making sense? It might work?

Great idea!!! I love how the vellum illuminates the votive.

I’m with Ms. Min Pin, I think a ribbon would be a nice touch

What about not actually taping it to the votive but having it just be like a straight cylinder sleeve? That way the doily goodness will line up?

I wrapped my non-cylindrical votives with decorative package sealing tape from tapeswell. I had to do it in three small pieces to make it lay flat, but I didn’t mind the overlap. I used black and white lace pattern.

@Miss Hot Wings: Yeah, I think that’s what Ella is suggesting. I’ll give it a shot this weekend. :)
Hope your spring break is going well!

@Smurfin: Thank you. :D

@BDubya: I DO have a lot of ribbon….

I have the same problem and same votives. I’ve been stuck for a while. I was considering ribbon, but it blocks the light too much. I am considering lightly spray painting them so that the light still glows through, but they have some decoration. I may use a stencil with the process to make them more ornate.

@BrianneG: Oh what a cute idea! I’ll go check it out! Is the tape removable?

I’m guessing (not sure if I’m right) that there’s a way to cut your vellum so that it wraps around your votive flatly. Do not stamp the doily edges until after you have cut your vellum to the right size/shape. Maybe we need to consult you FI :D. He has proved to be a problem solver!

I’m with pren79. I think you could make a template that when cut out would lay flat. Like a cone shape without the pointed part. Then cut the top to get the scalloped look you want.

The tape is totally removable. I’ll just pull it off before post them on the classifieds after the wedding.
