Mrs. Taco's Picture
Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.
About Mrs. Taco

Wedding Show Rundown

March 24th, 2010 @ 10:58 am by Mrs. Taco

I always loved wedding shows, even years before I was with Mr. Taco and years before engagement to anyone was even an option. Though he tries in vain to avoid wedding Sunday on WE TV, I’ve actually converted him over to a few choice programs. He’s a relatively active participant in the wedding-planning process, so it’s definitely nice to bond over our own personal choices and how, again and again, we’ll still think our party is better (for us) than the ones on TV. As it should be for every bride, methinks.

Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? was my favorite, though I don’t catch it very often these days. It’s fun to see the behind-the-scenes planning involved, especially when they have to put proverbial fires out. My friend S, a May 2009 bride whose wedding I’ll be bridesmaiding, was my co-conspirator, and I still marvel at how we managed to have real weddings so close to each other.

Now, My Fair Wedding with David Tutera is my favorite, as he’s essentially a bible on how to not be tacky. I don’t even love love all of his end designs (most of them aren’t me anyway), but I appreciate the inspiration and direction. And how funny is it when he has near-heart-attacks when he sees fake flowers?

Yay David!

Wedding Show Rundown : wedding san francisco Bash 1

For those of you with deep pockets, his planning fees start at $50K, according to Forbes.com.

Bridezillas: this show is basically Cops, right? Completely trashy and completely entertaining, if you’re in the right mood. Mr. Taco actually leaves the room when it comes on, or begs me to turn it to something else. Mwahaha.

Say Yes to the Dress: this one always prompts me to open the photos of my own dress, and become happy that it’s mine. It also reminds me that only you can determine what dress is your perfect one. Take others into account, especially if you have five bridesmaids saying you look terrible. But don’t buy it just because your mom, your sister, your aunt, or your momma’s brother’s cousin’s sister thinks you should. If you’re not in love, it’s not for you (kind of like getting married).

Unfortunately, it seems like people are motivated to pick things preferred by those controlling the purse strings, which is painful to watch.

Platinum Weddings: this show just makes me laugh. Who are these people and where’d they get a million dollars (literally) to spend on a wedding? I’ve never been jealous of what I’ve seen, which is another good sign. That said, if I did have an unlimited budget, I’d probably just invite more people and have the best of the best in San Francisco food for everyone.

What’s on your wish list if funds weren’t an issue?

I love David Tutera, but sometimes I think what he calls “tacky” is really just people struggling to afford their wedding. Like that one bride who was using the local military center with the ugly backyard and cooking all of the food herself? She clearly had a vision but no funds to execute it :( so she just gave up.

I love Rich Bride Poor Bride on WE. It’s a newer show (I think) and it’s always interesting to see what the final budget is at the end and what their initial wedding budget was (you see all the planning throughout the episode but they don’t give you figured till the end).

I love David Tutera’s show and have seen him in person :)

Platinum wedding is fun to watch but it seems that every bride just wants “bling”! You have a million bucks to spend and you can’t even be creative?? Really?

I would love a destination wedding if funds were not an issue. Fly everyone out to a chateau in France or a castle in Italy and have a week-long fiesta!

We are still in the early stages of planning (we just booked a venue, yay!) but I can’t think of anything that has made us say, “if only we had a bigger budget…” We are paying for this ourselves and although we are both making pretty good money, we don’t want to blow it all on the wedding. That has allowed me to be more creative. Even if we didn’t have a budget, I would still cringe at the idea of spending the “average” cost for a wedding ($25k, I think?). The only thing I can think of is maybe a florist. With our budget I can’t justify giving allocating $2k to flowers. I would like to have some centerpieces but I can live without floral arrangements so we are going to come up with something more practical.

I like Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? and Bridezillas - it made me feel better about my own crazy wedding and Bridesmaid-zilla.

I’m afraid that I really dislike David Tutera’s show…he’s pretty mean to brides who want something untraditional and/or don’t have much money. He would have hated our wedding!

I’d have all the delicious foods/renowned chefs from around the world cater my reception and have it as a destination wedding similar to yummyduccky66’s vision! I would also have my ultimate dream dress and just sit back and watch all my planners play firefighters to my wedding!

I agree I’ve never been jealous of Platinum weddings. Most of the time (not that this is a bad thing) it’s funded by the parents and I think I’d have a pang of jealousy if the couple were just more successful than me. That’s the competitive devil inside of me talking.

We don’t have unlimited funds, but our parents are paying and not really giving a budget, in fact, my Mom keep egging me on to get more elaborate. That said, I think it’s ridiculous to spend like $100K on flowers. While beautiful, that seems like a waste of money to me - like you said it’s one day. And I negotiate prices of everything including my dress (17% off baby!!!). But if money totally weren’t an issue at all, I guess I would have chosen a bigger venue and invited more people. I get sad sometimes about how small our ballroom is, it’s sort of the only thing that stresses me out. And maybe we would pay for people’s hotel rooms too, that would be lavish in my opinion.

Remember that show where your friends would get together and plan your whole wedding, from dress to decor to dinner?
I loved that show. With my wedding two months away, I’m really wishing I had talked my family and friends into something like that. :)

I agree with you about Platinum Weddings. I THRIVE off finding a good deal and will research online resources until my fingers turn blue…. there’s no way I would spend a mil on my wedding…. I could easily spend 50 thou but even that’s dreaming!

Not a huge Bridezilla’s fan, those chicks put on a front for the cameras I think…

LOVE LOVE LOVE David Tutera!!!!

I open the pictures of my dress every time Say Yes to the Dress comes on too! And even though it came in slightly under budget, I have yet to see a dress that I like more for me. If I had unlimited budget, I’d probably do more things like pay for the bridal party hotel rooms, have a welcome party, pay for the bridesmaid dresses…. but honestly, the venue we picked is my favorite and it was the cheapest, same with our caterer, I love the florist… maybe I’d have live music instead of a DJ.
I know– I’d do a lavish honeymoon! The party is already great, I want an awesome HM now!

Ok so “Who’s wedding is it anyway” is what started the wedding show craze for me years ago. I think Samantha is my favorite and I love the variety of weddings that are planned on the show, not just $100k and up events. Since then I have added David Tutera to my watch list and (guilty pleasure) Bridzillas if there is nothing else on. These women are playing it up in front of the camera, which is annoying yet irresistable to watch. Ah David, you have such creative vision, but why must you make such snarky and overly generalized comments like “Blue in a wedding is just tacky”?

Platinum weddings? These are the people that should just not have money, what a waste. But yeah I watch it anyways :) Can’t help myself

I enjoy most of those shows, esp say yes to the dress-I get my fashion kick and bridal kick in one go. I also like Ace of Cakes on Food Network. Those cakes are so pretty!

Ihave to agree with some other ladies and vote against David Tutera. His idea of ‘tacky’ is anything that isn’t crazy expensive or part of the WIC. I mean, he yelled at a bride who gave all her bridesmaids flip flops for dancing. He’s mean to brides that are creative about what they can do on their budget e.g having a ipod wedding “it’s tacky! you need a band” If he could pull of any kind of wedding other than big, huge, you’re a celebrity, walk the red carpet, glam glam glam-I’d be impressed.

My FI thinks I’m nuts for watching so many of these but I never put them on until we were engaged. I can’t stand David Tutera, his weddings end up so impersonal and gaudy in my opinion. I love Rich Bride, Poor Bride because you really see the bride and groom’s personality in their weddings, though the theatrics are little much sometimes. I also like “Bulging Brides” and I’ve started watching that new show on TLC, “Four Weddings.” Those brides are so petty that it’s funny.

I admit I’m a big fan of wedding shows. I love Rich Bride, Poor Bride since it shows a lot of weddings with different budgets. I’ll watch David, whose wedding is it anyways, platinum weddings and on occasion Bridezilla. Bridezillas have gotten almost unbelievable, but I’ll still get sucked into a marathon here and there when there isn’t anything else one.

I love ‘Rich Bride, Poor Bride’ if only for the voice-over commentary and funny sound effects. I am NOT a fan of ‘Bulging Brides’ because the name is so offensive. No one ever hassles the groom to lose weight, or tells him he can’t drink at his bachelor party. ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ makes me wish my own wedding dress wasn’t in another province. I miss it!

Your Line Up is pretty much the same as mine but sadly I just moved and have no cable…so I can’t watch any of this stuff until I move to Scotland :(

I still watch SYTTD. It’s totally addicting. Did you watch the one about the girl who said she was a princess? The salesperson said, “the definition of a princess is she gets whatever she wants.”
