Searching for the Dress

March 25th, 2010 @ 3:25 pm by Mrs. Starfish

While on my quest for the dress, I felt like I was struggling. I couldn’t find any dresses that really stood out to me. I kept coming back to dresses with four characteristics, although never on the same dress: cap sleeves, lacey, flowy, or flower details.

After a year of looking, I felt like I was never going to find “THE DRESS”. Then, I went to a Wedding Show in Boston and came across Madeleine’s Daughter, a boutique in Portsmouth, NH. It was a little out of the way for me, but they had this dress:

I was instantly in love.

I loved the lace and the flowy bottom. I’m partial to empire waists, so it had extra appeal. Shortly after the show, I had booked an appointment a state away. I dragged Starfish Mom and Sister Starfish along.

We got there and I wasn’t impressed with the dress. I liked it, but I didn’t LOVE it. I also was annoyed by the silver sequin swirl on the top of the dress, it seemed out of place and it really bothered me.

I told my sales assistant Kerry my budget and the four things I liked about dresses. I showed her some pictures and pretty much said everything I liked and didn’t like about each one. She ended up showing me dresses I never would have thought of and I was starting to actually think I’d find “the dress”.

She brought out dresses with cap sleeves, lace, flower details and dresses that flowed:

She brought out one dress with amazing flower details, but it was less modest than I would’ve like. I realized quickly that I did not want a V-neck. The dress was shot down, although I really love the flower details on the top:

I then tried on a dress with cap sleeves. I loved the top of this dress, but wasn’t crazy about the bottom. It was too formfitting for me, although I did love the laced up back. I thought it was different.

I then tried on a flowy dress. It was a dress by Emerald Bridal. They were having a sample sale, so the dress would be 15 % off and under my budget. It was simple, and I loved it when I tried it on in the store.

I thought it was the one.

By the end of the day, I thought a couple dresses were the one. I went from having the dilemma of not loving any dresses to having the dilemma of not knowing which dress to choose.

Did you try on dresses that specifically fit your criteria, or did you let your bridal consultant give you dresses that she thought would look good on you? Did she pull anything you thought you’d dislike, but were surprised to like?

How funny! I tried on three of the dresses in this post! I almost bought the Maggie Sottero Milana, (the one with the cap sleeves and the tulle bottom!) Great taste, Starfish!

I too had the dilemma of finding a dress that I really thought would be the one. The first shop I went to, I was specifically looking for the Dallas Marie by Maggie Sottero. Well they didn’t have it, the one they did have had been sold. The owner of the store did NOT want to order it for me, so I left. The second shop I went to that day, I felt comfortable as soon as I walked through the door. Me and my MOH looked through dresses and I found a few that I liked, but not LOVED. I was mainly looking for the dresses that look like they wrap…without looking like a mummy. I had one that I liked then the owner said “if i pick one out, will you put it on?” She went to get the Coco by Maggie Sottero and I was nervous because I didn’t like beading, but I put it on anyways and let me tell you, I absolutely lit up. It was gorgeous on. BTW…that last dress looks great on you!

I can’t wait to see what you picked! When i went dress shopping, the one thing I knew was that it had to be lace. I’d been in love with lace dresses for a long time. I tried on a bunch of them, and almost picked one. But then my consultant brought out an organza gown with only a small bit of lace detailing at the waist. I wasn’t going to bother trying it on (I liked one of the lace ones), but my sister insisted. It turned out to be the perfect dress, and I bought it! Thank you bridal consultants!

I bought my gown at a charity gown sale, so we just took everything that had any appeal in my size off the racks (and then one size lower when my normal size was too big). The dress I chose was NOTHING like what I had imagined, but I love it! I wanted strapless in white, and endles up with ivory halter neck! :-) Compared to the style I thought I wanted it was clearly much more flattering style! Congrats! Can’t wait to see “the one”!

Madeline’s Daughter is where I got my dress too :) I really enjoyed my experience there - even though it wasn’t the kind of place I was originally intending upon going to.

Hope you found something there you liked :)

My consultant ended up picking out THE dress! She was awesome and listened to the likes and dislikes of the ones I tried on and TA DA!

It took me 3 different visits before I found THE dress and it was completely different from what I thought I wanted. Curious to see what you pick!

My consultant ended up picking my dress. I always did like seeing what the consultant would bring out based on my criteria and then based on she she liked for my body type.

the cap-sleeve one is my fav on you. It looks so soft and feminine. A very timeless look. You looked great in all of them and I’m sure you’ll make a great choice!

I think they both look awesome. Such pretty dresses. It makes me want to go shopping again!

I ended up choosing something my consultant made me try on. I would’ve never picked it myself, but when I put it on, I loved it!

It was the third dress I tried on, picked out for my by my consultant. It was the exact opposite of what I thought I wanted. But it was THE one!

The first dress you posted is my dress:) I saw it online…LOVED it. Went to a store and tried it on, but didn’t want to pay quite that much. So some lovely bride on ebay was selling it, had never worn it but had purchased a new dress and was trying to unload the Casablanca 1900. It was the exact size and color I needed, all for a hugely discounted price! I went for my first fitting a few weeks ago and pick it up this weekend! It fit perfectly but needed to be taken up in length. The 1900 has an applique along the bottom that can be taken off for them to hem it, and then reapplied. So no worries on alterations!

I bought the Maggie Milana! And am going to talk to my alterations specialist about adding “pouf” to the bottom so it looks more like it does on their website.

I gave the bridal consultants the list of dresses I liked from their site and one I wasn’t fond of ended up on the list accidentally. Turns out that it was the one I loved and bought!

Did you pick any of those dresses. I love the cap-sleeve one on you… too bad it was so form fitting on the bottom.

That’s where I got my dress too! I am so jealous of all the pictures that you got because I didn’t take any out of fear of getting yelled at (very a la “Say Yes to the Dress” :)! I can’t wait to see what you picked! :)
