The Button Pin Badge

March 25th, 2010 @ 8:48 am by Mrs. Sewing

The one-inch button has enamored me for quite a long time now. A staple of any fanboy convention scene, they are used to proudly decorate and describe one’s self without the need for spoken words.

But are they out of place at a wedding?

I haven’t sported the button pins on a regular basis since I left college and joined the professional realm, and as fun as they are, I’m pretty sure Mr. Sew would give me a eye roll and a two-letter word starting with “n”. Especially when the price tag for a button machine is over $200. That’s not exactly a purchase one makes on a whim.

But then I see things like these -

(source) This one is cool since each button is personalized for the respective guest!

(source) Even Martha gives the button pin a nod!

And I think, “Hey - why not?”

However, I’m not sure what our non-twenty-and-under crowd would do with them, even if they were the coolest or cutest of designs. They might wear it for the night, and then toss it the next day. And that would make me sad. I know my mom would probably pin it to her favor backpack, but that’s only because she’s cool and hip. Would others do the same? Most of our friends are conventioneers themselves, so I know they would appreciate a good badge or two. My sister, I know, would be ecstatic, seeing as she single-handedly blew all her allowance on button pins at last year’s anime convention.

While I’m at it, let’s just pie-chart our possible guests -

It seems to be a pretty even split. And I automatically gave a “no” vote to anyone I don’t really know (like some of Mr. Sew’s extended family). Overall, I think most guests would be down with the buttons. Maybe they’d even keep them if I kept the designs versatile enough.

Now, to find a happy medium I could always just have buttons made and skip the up-front cost of machine buying. Etsy has some pretty affordable options. But if you know me at all by now, you know that part of me wants to own the whole process. And I know I would use the machine post-wedding - so it wouldn’t be a wedding-only splurge. It is on my master wish list of tools to own in the future. Right next to the laser cutter and 3D printer (a girl can dream, right?). Comparatively, this is a more affordable option. Refill costs are fairly low, which is a plus.

I guess it just comes down to asking myself if I am justifying unnecessary spending by using the “wedding” excuse or not. It certainly sounds like I am. I’ll have to sit on this one, I think.

Does anyone else having some hot-button-action at their wedding? And does anyone know where I can find a cheaper 1-inch machine?

I love buttons! I think you should go for it. We’re getting some from etsy for our wedding.

We’ll be pinning them to the top of our favor boxes. I don’t know that the older folks will be that into them, but I couldn’t resist.

I love it! Can’t you just have them made? I’ve done this many times - there are lots of DIY button people out there who will do them on the cheap - especially if you provide the artwork. Maybe try Craigslist?

What a cute idea! I’d vote “yeah!”

And since I am Queen Justification: You can always use the machine later when you have kids, for them, for their birthdayparties.
And you could make custom presents for your sister! :)

My sister had them as escort cards that said “Hello my name is ______” We attached them like the picture above to the place cards. They were a hit! People were wearing them around the wedding as name tags, so everyone who didn’t know them could go up and know who they were. haha.

One word…. WANT!

I am such a button lover. I don’t really have them anywhere except my hawt laptop backpack or on my little button display, but I’m addicted.

My favorite is “You are the CSS to my HTML.”

I bought one last weekend that said, “I love you more than bacon.”

Anyway, I fully fully fully support the button plan!

I think that people would love them. I think Mrs. Strawberry had buttons at her wedding. You should check out her recaps!

Not sure where you can find one, but I love this idea! You could do buttons to show of your manga dwgs! I think they would make for some really great pictures on the dance floor or in a photo booth. I vote yes!

this is a cute idea, but it seems like this DIY project would take a ton of time. Do you have time to make all the personalized buttons?

We did buttons! We stuck some to the OOT bags (recycled grocery bags) and also attached one to each placecard. We put the extras in little bowls around the cocktail hour.

I can get you the info - we didn’t DIY them. I found a “company” that makes these to promote small-time local bands. I am pretty sure they’re just HS kids. But they were perfect and CHEAP. We did 50 buttons of 6 designs for 300 buttons total for $71. I designed them in Illustrator and sent them the files. They were delivered within a week. Done and done. (50 is the minimum of each design.)

The email address I have for them is: help at thepinpress dot com.

I’ve used this one before, although I don’t own it. Nice and easy, and at $85, much cheaper than the bench presses.

I think if you were using the buttons for a purpose that you would otherwise be spending money on anyways, then you could reasonably justify it. Could they be Escort Cards, Favors, Both?
