Mrs. Swan's Picture
Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

Mr. Swan didn’t make too many demands during the planning process except for one: Piano Man. You mean the Billy Joel song, Mr. Swan? Yepper doo. Can I just say that I was happy to even know this song ’cause sometimes Mr. Swan whips out names of songs, and I give him a blank stare? Mr. Swan lucked out this time because I am very familiar with and like Billy Joel. Besides, Billy is a New Yorker. :)

For those who aren’t familiar with the song, here’s a clip from 1975 of Billy Joel singing Piano Man.”\ I’m happy to say that this clip is older than I am. :)

I’m sure you’re asking, “’Piano Man’, but why?”

Well, apparently during Mr. Swan’s college days this song signified the end to one of the many basement frat parties that occupied Mr. Swan’s weekend evenings. (That’s a nice way of saying he partied a lot. I doubt I need to give you more evidence.) Don’t front, you’ve all been to at least one of those kinds of parties too. :) Apparently, this song has some significance to Mr. Swan’s childhood friends as well, so it was a no-brainer to have our DJ, Rob, play this song as we came towards the end of the reception. Besides, who am I to deny a group of grown men a moment to get a little sappy and sing at the top of their lungs? After graduating, playing “Piano Man” became a wedding tradition at many of the weddings of his fraternity brothers, so we continued the tradition.

As the bride, my job was to stand in the middle of the group while they sang, arms linked and all.

Then I was told I was supposed to start dancing with everyone, so I did! I think I must have danced with each man in that circle. I totally enjoyed connecting, talking and dancing with them all, especially since some of the guys hadn’t been on the dance floor yet for the day.

Sigh…I always love your recaps. We had a weird little tradition with my husband and his 2 childhood friends/groomsmen. When the first one got married, the others bought a giant smiley-face pinata. It’s made appearances at the other two weddings now. Since my husband was the last to get married, it’s ours…

Yup - very similar tradition to yours. We played the Gambler - random I know - at the end of our reception b/c that is the last song played at a popular college bar. Our friends started this traditions, we continued it

I was a part of a youth organization that I was in until about 21. And we had this song that we sang everywhere we went especially at the weddings. We would honor the girl by putting her in the middle and sing the song (it was only like a 30 sec song). But it’s kinda similar to the piano man situation. LOL!! It looks like a lot of fun & great that thye incorporated you into their little tradition!
