Cake Inspiration

March 26th, 2010 @ 8:46 am by Mrs. Starfish

When we were thinking about our wedding cake, we had two criteria: all white, and it had to be simple.

After looking at numerous wedding magazines and blogs, I found many gorgeous and intricate cakes. I love cakes with texture and unique design elements, cakes with florals and fun shapes. But in the end, we kept coming back to one particular cake.

I found a picture in the early planning stages in the Knot Boston Magazine. I was drawn to the wedding because the couple had a similar color scheme of blue and white and used hydrangeas. As I was reading the article, I saw the cake and I knew it was it. I held on to the photo in my wedding planning binder. Over the following year, I kept searching for other designs, but always ended up back with this one.

We both love the simple design of the increasingly larger dots. We are skipping the flowers, as we both love the simplicity of the cake.

Were you indecisive about how to design your cake, or did you have a vision in mind all along?

Wow, beautiful cake. And I honesty don’t really like many traditional wedding cakes. I do agree though about skipping the flowers, I think that the flowers take something away from it and make it not quite perfect.

The cake was honestly the thing that took me the longest to come to a decision on. We knew the flavors and the icing, but I wanted the design to be perfect. Just settled it last weekend.

4 level (6, 8, 10, 12) White almond decorators icing - she is going to try to do a “ribbed” texture on the main cake. It will have a 1.5″ grosgrain ribbon around each layer & three green hydrangeas on alternating sides. We will then have a crystal monogram as the topper. I’m happy!

This cake is gorgeous! I am also of the “all white and simple” camp. I love buttercream icing, and it looks more appealing to me when it isn’t too adorned. Your choice is beautiful!

When I got engaged, I knew the exact shape I wanted (squares) and picking a design came fairly easily as well!

We’re doing a navy blue & white wedding with tons and tons of blue hydrangeas. (and we’re honeymooning in Newport!) I’ve changed my mind a bunch of times on the cake, but we finally decided to go with 3 layers, a thick navy blue grosgrain ribbon stacked with a thin light blue grosgrain ribbon at the base of each layer. We’re putting a small bunch of blue hydrangeas on alternating sides and have a brushed metal monogram cake topper. It’s a simple look, but I think you can’t go wrong with a clean and classic design!

I LOVE your inspiration pic! Beautiful!

mmm cake! pretty design. sometimes simple is best, as its definitely elegant and timeless. our cake started with a simple idea, but then it just got more and more crazy, so now it’s not so simple. lol.

That cake is so beauitful, I can see why you have loved it for so long!

I love the elegance of the white on white & the poka dots looks great.

We are going to have cupcakes with one small tier on top for us to cut- don’t have any of the colors or design yet

If we had gone the cake route, I definitely would have had a simple white cake. I like your inspiration pic a lot.

Such a pretty cake-I’m also drawn to the simple design. My cake was similar, but we added a small monogram and just one row of Swiss Dots around each later.
