The DJ Search

March 26th, 2010 @ 3:21 pm by Mrs. Starfish

After four consultations with DJs throughout RI, we finally found THE ONE! I was so excited because by the time we went on our drive to the fourth consultation, I was starting to think we would never find the perfect DJ, but we did.

We met with Larry from Engagements D.J. Entertainment, out of East Greenwich, RI. He was absolutely perfect for us. We were looking for someone who is low key, has experience, will work with us on the playlist, has a great personality and who has decent prices. He has the whole package. He will even play the Cha Cha Slide, which I never thought would be an issue, until a consultation with another DJ.

The DJ Search : wedding dj newport Title 0 The DJ Search : wedding dj newport Ph Brid We had met with four DJs total—the most vendors we had met with for anything. I know four isn’t too many (I think 3-4 is a good number), but we originally thought we would need to find more people to look at before making a decision, since the first 3 consultations didn’t work out so well.

DJ # 1 had a lot of pros. I thought he had a nice style, experience, personal touches, but he was a little pricey. He never responded to a follow up email I sent to thank him for meeting with us. I was a little turned off by that. I don’t know why; I know he isn’t required to respond, but I like working with vendors who really like us and want to work with us too, and I felt like the lack of response made it seem like he didn’t feel the same way, although the meeting went great.

DJ # 2 unfortunately there wasn’t anything we liked about him. The meeting was a nightmare and total waste of both of our time. I felt bad for the guy, he didn’t have a chance with us, and I should have known how to communicate this with him earlier in our meeting.

DJ # 3 had a lot of pros, I REALLY liked him. He had everything going for him, buttttttt he would not play the Cha Cha Slide, and I couldn’t get past that.

DJ # 4 was THE ONE. We went in with doubts, as he was recommended by the same person who recommended DJ # 2. I actually almost canceled the appointment! We decided to give him a shot, after not being fully on board with the others. I am so glad we did! He is someone we just felt a connection with and after an hour meeting, I really feel like we can trust him to do an excellent job of keeping our guests entertained and making the reception run smoothly. He has a lot of experience with our venue, and had wonderful things to say about working with our coordinator in the past. He also has worked with our other vendors on numerous occasions, so I feel like they all have relationships and will work really well together.

I am so relieved that we found him.

Did you have trouble finding a specific vendor? Did you have to meet with a lot of vendors before finding THE ONE? How many?

Thank goodness you didn’t cancel the last appointment! Not that anything else is less important, but finding the perfect DJ is vital. He’s going to help make the reception and you and Mr. Starfish the life of the wedding/party!!!

That was the case for videographers; everything I explained, which was so simple, folks just didn’t understand. When I found the one, he knew exactly what I wanted, how I wanted it, and he was exactly within the price range I wanted to spend.

Everything fell into place like clockwork for me. When I knew my vendors were right, it was just a feeling.

Mind me asking if you know the reason he wouldn’t play the Cha Cha Slide? It’s a must have for me!

Yeah, I’m with jgoulart. I’d like to know what he had against your ‘must have’ song.

We only had one DJ meeting and I was relieved, we loved him and I didn’t want to meet with anymore! But if he didn’t play the cha cha slide, it would have been a dealbreaker for me too!

We actually only met with one b/c he came highly recommended by several friends and he was within our budget. Luckily, I also attended a wedding he DJ’ed and loved it!

For us it was the cake. We went to a tasting and then tasted several cakes at the bridal show with no real winner. I was ready to give up and let my aunt’s friend bake it for us but she was a bit nervous about the delivery. In the end we actually tasted and booked a cake from a bakery in Newport. Our DJs were the easiest as they did my cousin’s wedding 3 years ago and we liked them so we didn’t bother to look further. Our meeting confirmed our decision.

We went to one wedding where the dj stopped the cha cha slide in the middle to tell everyone to tell everyone that they were doing it wrong, inform us of the correct way to dance, and then start the song back up again from the beginning. Kinda killed the dancing for the night, and now it’s all I can think of whenever I hear it! :p But you dj sounds awesome and I’m sure would never do anything like that!

Why in the world would someone you are PAYING refuse to play a song you want? That doesn’t make sense! What was his reasoning?

Hilarity @ the one refusing to play the cha cha slide!!! We only looked at 2… 1 super pricey “hollywood” one that seemed like all he could do was name drop… (like I do live in Atlanta but I am not Kim from RHOA!!) and then another very nice guy… smaller… but very professional.. and I’m happy with that!

Now photgraphers on the other hand… I plead the 5th…

@jgoulart: He just said it’s not my style. Which was so frustrating. He won’t play any line dances at all. We really liked his style, except that he refused to play the Cha Cha Slide. I know some people aren’t fans of it, but me and my friends love it!@CanadaBride: @LisaBee:

Man. ChaCha slide is GREAT! Its one of those that gets everyone dancing. I also highly recommend the Cupid Shuffle. Super easy too!
