About Mrs. Oyster

You’re Invited

March 26th, 2010 @ 3:40 pm by Mrs. Oyster

Continuing with the “follow my instincts” approach to wedding planning, I believe my fiancé and I have chosen our invitations!

By the time we found our invitations last spring, I’d seen hundreds of invites online and spent some time with my maid of honor looking at books. For weeks, I hadn’t seen any I truly loved, and I certainly don’t want to pay to have something “flat-printed” when it looks identical to something I could do with some creativity and my HP inkjet.

So just for fun, my fiancé and I stopped in at Paper & Chocolate, surely one of the prettiest stores in Dallas. They do wedding invites, and we spent a while looking at books. Mr. Oyster picked a letterpress book, and voila! We found our invites. It was love at first sight! Check it out (click to see it customized many different ways):

I never even allowed myself to dream of letterpress, but Mr. Oyster’s advanced degree is in printmaking, so that gives us a great excuse. Plus, it was great to see him so excited about the process. Just wait until you see how they turned out!

These invites are truly a work of art. When we picked them, I’d only just heard of Smock Paper. By now, everyone knows what makes the invites so great: they’re printed on ecologically sound (I’ll admit, my fiancé cares way more about this than I do) bamboo paper which is very thick and feels like cotton. When I saw this invite in person, I couldn’t help but touch the paper over & over again.

I cannot explain how I felt to see this invitation, except to know that it was *the one*! I’ve only seen a few designs I’ve even wanted to look at twice, and my mother pointed out that this invitation is similar to the few I’d shown her. I didn’t even realize that! There’s something to be said for listening to your instincts (and your mother).

Were you in the minority of brides that found an invitation design you loved right away? Did you keep looking or just know instantly that you’d found it?

Love that one. We almost went with Smock (love how thick their paper is!), but ended up going with a local designer to make our invitations. But yay for letterpress!

Its beautiful, but seriously expensive. I would keep looking and use the money towards better entertainment/food.

I found a look I loved but shopping around to get it done was just ridiculous. So I decided to just make it; FI helped with some of the design, but I worded all of it, printed, cut, pasted, etc. and they are kick ass. Everyone has raved about and his dad, who isn’t exactly savvy, thought we had them done and FI was kind enough to pass around the kuddos and told him that I made them. Best decision ever and we saved a lot of money.

You guys are mega-artistic, that’s awesome. I have a letterpress buddy, so we were lucky to be able to have them at-cost!

Gorgeous! I wish I could have justified the cost of letterpress invites but they were just a more than I could bear to spend. For those brides who fell in love with lovely cotton paper (like me) Hello Lucky is a great mid-priced option. Their off-set line is done on recycled cotton paper, which made me very happy!

Those are beautiful! It took me forever to pick out the design we ultimately went with. And I hear ya on the whole ‘listening to your mother’ part. Mommas know best!!

Love. Just… love. I had not head of Smock - what an amazing selection they have. This could be bad for my budget…
