Mrs. Taco's Picture
Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.
About Mrs. Taco

The bride’s day-of attire is a surefire cost suck. As usual, the groom’s attire is anything but.

My groom isn’t a tuxedo person, exactly. He looked handsome in a tux at his brother’s wedding in 2008 (see below); a) don’t mind the jig, b) yes, he’s wearing cowboy boots, c) yes, it was in Texas. As nicely as he cleaned up that day, it still felt like he was playing-dress-up. Has anyone felt the same way seeing their fella in a tux? Anyway, encouraging him, his groomsmen, his ushers, and our dads to wear their own black suits on Big Day was our preferred option.

Let’s Talk About Him (For a Change) : wedding san francisco Jig1 jig

Mr. Taco has a black Banana Republic suit he wears to all dress-up events (holiday parties and other people’s weddings, including one he was in), and it’s going to make yet another appearance on wedding day. New shoes are probably in order, as is lengthening the pants. Suits are so weird: almost as weird as dresses and pants for us ladies, I dare say. I hate when the pants rise ever-so-slightly too high, rather than sitting properly on whatever shoes you’re wearing. I also dislike that Talking Heads look when they’re too big, as I’m not getting married in 1983, nor am I marrying David Byrne or putting on a huge show for your entertainment (or am I?).

I’m sure we’ll figure him out before long, probably weeks or months before my own alterations are sorted out.

Did your groom end up wearing something he already owned for the wedding, or did you find that new clothes were in order for the big day?

I bought him a suit for our engagement present, and that’s what he will be wearing for our wedding!

We just went suit shopping today! And I totally get what you mean by the talking heads thing…if there’s one thing we can’t stand it’s an ill-fitting suit!

I wanted him to wear his class A (dress) uniform from the Army but now that’s he’s retired military he doesn’t want to wear it anymore… As our wedding is not a terribly formal park wedding, we may do a suit for him rather than a tux.

My dress cost $614. My fiance just purchased a custom-made $1400 suit. This is how I’m justifying a purchase of Manolos or Louboutins.

Mr. Starfish isn’t a tux person either, he’s going to wear a navy blazer and khakis, definitely more his style.

He wore his existing suit since he looks so good in it and loves it. We did spend a little more to get 2 really nice shirts for our night & day events though :)

I love the Talking Heads/David Byrne reference-I totally knew what you meant. My husband bought his tux for a black-tie wedding figuring he would wear it for ours. He did look a little like he was playing dress up-not quite the Bond, James Bond look I was hoping for. We never thought about having the tux brought back in before our wedding for a fitting, & it was a lil’ big (ala David Byrne). We tried to convince the wedding party to buy black suits, but no one was feeling that, so they rented tuxes.

@MandyW: I know a MandyW-I thought maybe you were her, but her FB status does not say engaged!

We haven’t decided what he’ll wear exactly, but we’re thinking about renting from Al’s Formal Wear.

My FI is also not a tux wearing kind of guy. He actually just bought his first suit a few months ago and even at the time I thought it would be perfect for our wedding. We’ll just have to get him a new shirt, tie and probably new shoes.
