Dress Developments: Reality Hits

March 29th, 2010 @ 10:14 am by Mrs. Oyster

So I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how I want to look at my wedding, and I started doing some research. As it turns out, many of the dresses I thought were a possibility suddenly weren’t.

By now, I wonder if every bride hasn’t heard of the “bridal sizing shock”, but I certainly hadn’t until I was a few months into planning. Luckily, many designers include patterns for their dresses up to size 24, but many simply don’t go up that far. I knew this, but thought I could get the dress custom sized. But then I started looking at the extra fees! Most of them are not too bad.

I thought this info might be helpful for those just starting out with their dress shopping. When I started shopping, I was a little too intimidated to call around and when I did, often the bridal salon staff didn’t know or wasn’t sure. I mean, if you’re going to squeeze into a too-small dress, you don’t want it to be in vain, right?

For a “street size” 24/26/28, here are some designers whose dresses will definitely fit:

Augusta Jones: up to size 30

  • only some gowns
  • add 45% of purchase price (I hope this is not true)

Alfred Angelo goes up to size 32

Allure bridals: size 32

  • no upcharge
  • hollow to hem add $50

Anjolique bridal: up to 32

Bonny: size 26/28

  • add $60

Casablanca: not sure, custom sizes available for extra charge.

David’s Bridal: up to 26

  • $100 to $150 extra for sizes 16W-26W

Demetrios: size 26/28

  • add $150

Jasmine: size 28, customizable after that

  • add $60

Maggie Sottero, up to size 32; past that no charge.

Saison Blanche: size 24/28

  • add $40

(Feel free to add to this list in the comments.)

There are only one or two designers in that list whose dresses I was really into. I’m sure several of the top tier designers (eg. Priscilla of Boston, etc.) will make a dress in any size you want, but I haven’t looked those up, as those dresses are likely to be over $5,000.

So I’m faced with some choices here.

I could order a dress that costs x amount, and then end up paying nearly twice that with extra fees and alterations, or, I could order a dress that fits, but isn’t quite like what I want to wear. That would be okay, too, but perhaps there is another option… ?

Anyone else shocked by “bridal” (or “traditional,” as they say) sizing? Did it impact your shopping?

have you looked into having a dress custom made? This might work well for you if you have a pretty good idea of what you want. I had a hard time finding something that I liked in stores - I would find a dress that had most of what I wanted but then there was something that would really turn me off to it. My mother suggested having a dress made, which I hadn’t even considered because I assumed it would be WAY out of my price range. It turns out that I will actually be saving money and getting just what I want in my dress - it could be worth looking into!

Good luck!

You should look into Mori Lee. I believe they go up to a size 28. I bought one and the upcharge for plus size was $50. Good luck with your search!

Alfred Angelo has some great dresses that will look great on plus-size brides. I purchased my dress from them (street size 18/20) and I could not have been happier!
I will though suggest you get your alterations done elsewhere.. they are WAY too pricey.. I paid $350 for a bustle and hem when I could have paid $200 elsewhere.

I was disappointed at my options for trying on dresses. I went into one store that told me they had lots of plus size dresses. I told them I was interested in something with lace, they only had one plus size gown with lace. Lucky for me, I loved and ended up buying it. But it would’ve been nice to see some other options. What is even more confusing to me is that the average US woman is a size 12, which would be a 14 or a 16 in wedding dress sizes and most of these places stock size 8 for sample sizes. Arghhh!

The level to which bridal gowns are “sized down” vs. street clothes was really surprising! I look forward to seeing what you end up choosing!

I was surprised I am a street size 16 and ended up buying a maggie 12, i think it was because of the construction of the dress. David’s wanted me to buy a plus size I am right on the edge, it’s a wonder how the sizing can be so difficult, so don’t worry about the size worry about HOW the dress fits.

Yeah, I had such a tough time, I wear a 20 in street size pants. I ended up ordering a dress from China, but label was not important to me. (it only cost me 330 after shipping, and it’s exactly what I want)

Street size 22/24 here, and also having to deal with a large chest. I tried on quite a few dresses, but after a while, I realized that my best option was to have a dress custom made. By the time alterations were made to the dresses I was looking at, they would have had to deconstruct the entire top section and rebuild it. At that point, why not have something made from the ground up?

It’s actually not that bad! I’m having something made that fits me, my personality and will look right on me. Even better, it’s coming in under the cost of all the wedding dresses I’d been looking at. I, for one, can highly recommend at least checking into having a custom-made dress. :D

My mother is very “size aware” and really “size judgemental” and has been so since I was a kid - where some of my body issues come from obviously.. and I warned her that bridal sizes are one to two sizes bigger than your actual size. She didn’t believe me till I made her try on an 8 (she is a street 4, sometimes 2 in dresses) and the dress fit her very well. Then she started listening!

I was aware of it going in, so I wasn’t surprised, but she was :)

I just tried to pretend that sizes didn’t exist. :) I ended up having to do it all custom, so I don’t know what size I fell into. Way too tall for my own good. :(

I’m with Scissors. Bridal sizes are so crazy! Especially when you get into European designers….it was doubled from my normal street size just to fit over my hips. Good luck! :-) I’m sure you will find something gorgeous!

I totally thought it’d be the other way around: since brides want to wear a smaller than normal size, so the shops make their dresses a little larger than average. It blows my mind how they stock samples only…especially at the boutiques. Who in their right mind would buy a dress for $5000.00 that doesn’t even fit? Not me!

I post more on the knot but I also live in Dallas and on our local board girls have had the same problem so they either had a custom made dress by a local tailor named Becky Fowler ( custom made dresses run between ( 500-1500) or maybe call Lasting Bridal Coutour in Addison, Anonymously yours, and Lewisville Bridal Boutique - other brides have had some luck there

When I got my dress they ordered a size bigger than I was wearing at the time. I think it was bigger than the one I tried on but as I went up a size since then, I’m sorta glad they did or at least I hope it fits when I go for the fitting on weds.

I was surprised about the sizing for wedding dresses! I’m happy I was able to find a Mori Lee, and order it in a size 22 at no extra charge.

I would call your local Priscilla store, when I bought my dress the saleswoman told me that they were starting to bring in samples of larger dresses, and they were going to be a test store. You never know it might be cheaper then you think!

I was fully prepared for size shock when I went out dress shopping but was actually surprised that it wasn’t as bad as I expected. I chose to go to David’s Bridal because I knew they stocked samples in all sizes. I am a street size 16 and my dress is a 16W, which is pretty much an 18 in normal clothes.
