Red Paint and White Lies

March 29th, 2010 @ 12:07 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Right off the bat, our red, black and white color scheme was picked, because it’s manly, easy to find, and it matches our home (as much as one could match a home full of anime).

Done deal, right? Not so much. The bakery asked what shade of red to make our red ribbon. The florist wanted to know how dark a red rose to use in our bouquets. My mother asked what hue of red my sister’s dress needed to be. Mr. Sew’s brother wanted to make sure his red tie matched the red in the invitations.

Okay, he didn’t really ask that last one, but you get the point. Does shade matter? It’s debatable. For me, exact matches aren’t as important, but since they were asking…

“Rice bowl red.”

That’s the shade of red I had in my head. See, it’s all in the same ballpark as everything else:

Red Paint and White Lies : wedding color schemes honolulu Dsc024401 But even though it made sense to me, the professionals still advised me to go to Home Depot and find a paint color name.

Fine, whatever. Taking the rice bowl with him, Mr. Sew went to grab some paint chips. In his fear of being a deviant paint-sample thief who had no plans of buying any paint, he probably looked pretty guilty. When the salesperson asked the shifty-looking groom if he needed any help, Mr. Sew made up some elaborate story about how he was going to paint his non-existent home. Smooth. Since, you know - everyone chooses the color of their walls based on their tableware.

Red Paint and White Lies : wedding color schemes honolulu Dsc0245 Indiscreet red. And with Mr. Sew’s indiscreet painting-lies, I think it fits in a somewhat ironic way.

So there you have it, four months away from our wedding and we finally have an official color.

What’s your official color name? High fives to you if it’s completely random! And did you lie at the paint store, or tell them the truth about collecting wedding swatches?

We’ve got “Aruba pink” and “fresh peaches.” Luckily no one asked me what I was picking paint swatches for! I’m not quite sure how I would have answered that question.

We just call our colors grape purple and hunter green. And my florist asked that I buy ribbon and give it to her, so that she couldn’t mess the colors up!

Love the “indiscreet red”! Haha!

I went the easy route and picked out a David’s Bridal color, since by BMs dresses are from there. “Wisteria.” They gave me a swatch for free. No sly paint-chip stealing over here!

Hahhah that’s awesome! I always feel weird taking the color samples too. I think whoever designed the system wanted people to think people are watching them…

I need to do this. I say “blue” but I really should say a navy blue or something. Oops. That’s funny about his story, but really, people go there all the time for just samples and you can take as many as you want :) No purchase necessary.

Hahahaha! Indiscreet red - love it! At first, I totally thought you made that name up with some clever Photoshopping.

That’s a really good idea to get the paint swatches! Ours is clover green but instead of me stressing to try to get an exact color for everything, I’m just going with things in that green, yellow and brown ballpark.

This is hilarious! Poor Mr. S…who knew a trip to the paint department could be so nerve-wrecking!

I love rice bowl red! I have to admit, my colors are crayolas. I figure people tend to remember periwinkle from our coloring book days, right?

Maybe Rice-Bowl Red can be a new color!

Mine is clover green and no technical names for the cream/ivory we have complementing. Like sunnydebs, I have to bring in my own ribbon for my cake. Plus, I don’t really care if the shades are slightly different. Another minor detail I doubt anyone would notice but me!

@CinnamonStick: haha, aruba pink sounds pretty hip and cool!
@sunnydebs: @alivoo01: that’s a good alternative, using ribbon instead!
@shantastic: hehe, lucky you! wisteria sounds like a really pretty color..
@Ms. Library: yeah, esp since it’s right next to the paint counter!
@Curlysue: haha. yeah i’m sure it’s not a big deal. mr. sew just has a guilty conscience i guess.
@Miss Hamster: haha, no photoshopping on that one!
@Gerbera: that sounds like a yummy color :)
@QuarterNote: i love periwinkle and crayons! sounds perfect :)

Same color scheme as us! (We did some damask to liven it up a bit.) Our office/library is black, white, & red. We had some “shades,” but most were close to DB’s “apple red.” Btw, the Mr. Sew paint story is priceless!

This is hilarious! My fiance is just as bad a liar. Back when we were poor college seniors looking to get jobs in New York City, we had to take a 2am bus to Penn Station in order to be on time for 9am interviews. We tried to sneak into the train station waiting area to sleep, when we were stopped by a guard who asked us what train we were waiting for. “The 7 o’clock,” said my fiance. To where, the guard wanted to know. “To New York.” The guard stared at us. “Sir, you’re in New York.” Jeff: “Um, I meant upstate New York?” Thankfully, we looked so pathetic and sleepy that he let us wait there anyway. :) And we both ended up getting the jobs we were interviewing for!

There’s something endearing about boyfriends who are bad liars.

I’m definitely a paint chip hoarder. I tend to pick up at least a couple new ones each time I’m at Lowe’s. Our main color is “Aubergine” (but I also picked up “Poetic Purple” and “Berry Brown”).
