Mrs. Turtle's Picture
Mrs. Turtle, Central California Age and Occupation: 21, Art Student/Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, English Student Engagement Date: August 16, 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Mr. Turtle's Grandparents' backyard, Arroyo Grande, CA About Me: I am a California girl who loves the beach and the mountains, but is quite satisfied living right in the middle where I can enjoy the best of both worlds. I am happiest when traveling to faraway places, wandering through museums, watching old movies, or baking up a storm. Mr. Turtle and I are high school sweethearts and fellow book nerds who both drive Mini Coopers and are most likely to be found browsing in antique stores. We're having so much fun planning our European garden wedding with a vintage twist and can't wait to share more of life's adventures together!
About Mrs. Turtle

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, where oxlips and the nodding violet grows, quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine, with sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, II.i

I’ve always been inspired by fairy tales and the genre of fantasy. Last semester, in a Shakespeare course I took at school, I completely fell in love with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I had never read the play before, and the mixture of whimsy, beauty, magic, and surprise just struck me. At the end, I loved imagining what the double wedding between Lysander and Hermia and Demetrius and Helena would look like.

When I Googled “A Midsummer Night’s Dream wedding”, a lot of, let’s just say, interesting things came up, mainly along the lines of theater majors forcing their bridesmaids to dress up as fairies… But I did find this gorgeous photo shoot collaborated on by florist and event designer Tricia Fountaine and photographer Elizabeth Messina. It’s probably pretty dramatic for most people’s tastes, but between the stunning flowers and whimsical decor, I think these pictures can inspire beautiful details for a variety of weddings!

I promise we’re not having A Midsummer Night’s Dream themed wedding, but there are elements of this wedding that I would just love for ours to feel like.

Think but this, and all is mended: That you have but slumbered here, While these visions did appear.

Act V, epilogue

So, what do you think? Is it a little over the top for your taste? Or do you have a soft spot for fairy tales, magic, whimsy, and Shakespearean comedies, like I do?

It’s a bit much for me, but I’d love to be a guest at that wedding! I like your plan of using it as inspiration, as opposed to reproducing it exactly.

Whoa…I can’t even imagine the budget for that wedding/photography! It is beautiful, but, yes, a touch bit over the top for my tastes. And I feel like there would be bugs all over everything…I’m not the biggest nature fan!

I don’t think any bride would ever have to ‘force’ me to dress up as a fairy, I would love the excuse to wear wings for a day! Everything about that wedding is gorgeous, and clearly took a lot of work. Those ain’t cheap dollar store wings, that’s for sure.

A bit over the time top for me, but the color palette would offer a buffet of choices!

Apart from the falcon (birds freak.me.out.), I love every single thing about this dreamy post :)

I completely see what you are saying! I have always told people that I want “midsummer nights dream meets southern soiree for my wedding.” None of the crazy costumes, but the colors and fabrics give it such a romantic enchanted forest type feel. The centerpiece in the second from the bottom pick is beautiful!

I loved that shoot before you posted it, and it was just a photo shoot from the web gossip that came with it. If only I was brave enough to go “all the way”. One of my friends who runs a fantasy LARP I play in DID do it for her wedding and I was so happy. I hate having to conform to what the old people want - but I do also wonder if I’d be happy with it in 20 years.

While it is definitely more dramatic than something I would do, I love the feel! So magical and ethereal! Fairy tales and fantasy have always inspired me, some elements of this concept wedding will definitely end up in my own :)

I adore Shakespeare. I’m probably going to go to grad school for a Shakespeare research, performance and studies program. I would totally incorporate some of those elements. Perhaps not to the extreme of those photos but I do appreciate the inspiration behind those photos!

Just had to jump in and say how much I love A Midsummer Nights’ Dream. It has been my favorite since high school (maybe middle school) and I’ve read it more than any other book I own. *love* :)

@silverbrooke: @mars: Yeah, it’s definitely a photo shoot, not a real wedding!

@Mrs. Quiche: Birds freak me out too!!

I always describe my dress as “Midsummer Nights Dream” since it is flowy and empire waisted…I love the connotations!

My fiance and I actually met doing performing that play and are going to be married in the park where we performed it! I hadn’t thought about incorporating any of the play into the wedding, but now that I think about it, a little whimsy would be the perfect touch! Thanks for this post!

@Bri: What a wonderful story! You should totally think of some touches to incorporate from the play! That would be so special! (But you’d have to promise to upload those pictures and send me the link, so I could live vicariously through your wedding!)

I Love it! For my taste, not over the top! Of course you could reinterpret the forest-y, moss-y, magical, goodness! I think these images are so gorgeous and whimsical. I think elements of it really suit your overall aesthetic!
