Ghost Dress

March 30th, 2010 @ 10:13 am by Mrs. Sewing

“Excuse me, ma’am,” says a great white ghost hanging contemptuously in the dining room. “Remember me?”

Ghost Dress : wedding diy honolulu wedding dress Fabrich

Yep. That’s my wedding dress. Completely un-assembled.

Why haven’t I sewn it together yet? The mock-up turned out fine. I reached my target body weight. There’s no other legitimate excuse not to put it together.

But I just can’t bring myself to do it.

The cause behind the lack of enthusiasm? Maybe I’m experiencing what many other brides do: the second-guess-fear. What if I don’t love it as much as I did the first time I saw it? What if my tastes have changed, and the general consensus really has convinced me that pick-ups are out? What if I haven’t lost enough weight, and I still look like a giant next to Mr. Sew? What if I do a bad job sewing, and it falls apart while I trip down the aisle? What if it gets dirty, and rips to shreds at the dry cleaners?

Neither does it help that Mr. Sew is being oh-so-very-meticulous about the construction of the dress. Even cutting out the pieces took longer than expected due to his demands that each snippet be exact and perfect. Much different than the hasty, but adequate job we did on the mock-up.

Where I deal with my dress fears in avoidance, he deals with his in impossible standards.

Did I mention that I also don’t have a back-up dress? This apparition over my dining table is it. The pressure is on.

And there’s really only one way to answer all the “what-if” questions. And at some point, one just has to bite the bullet and go for it.

So no more hiding from you, wrinkled-spirit in white. I will sew that smug smile right off your face, straight onto my rear end. Just you wait. No looking back, I will begin today.

Did you have any dress fears before receiving your final gown? Did it end up in genuine regret, or sweet reassurance?

Aww, Sew, it’s going to be perfect! Don’t let people’s criticisms of pickups make you question what you like. YOU liked it for a reason! I think it looked glorious on you and I second the motion that you begin sewing today!

I am also afraid that I won’t love my gown when I see it again! It’s been held for safe keeping at the bridal salon until I go back for alterations in a couple of months. It’s driving me mad!

(but I’m sure both of our fears are for nothing and it’ll turn out great!)

“I will sew that smug smile right off your face, straight onto my rear end.” That’s hilarious! And, I fully support you in your mission. The mock dress looked amazing on you, and the real thing can only look better!

I started having a lot of reservations the 2 weeks before my dress came in. When it finally came in, it was perfect. I bet you’ll feel the same way when your’s is put together.

It’s going to be wonderful - you loved the mockup that was a quicky trial. There’s no way the real deal is going to be antyhing less since he was so particular in making the pieces. Go for it!!!

I am also a pick-up bride…and proud of it. Believe me, hearing everyone call them ugly DID make me second guess my choice…lots of times!

But you know what? I dropped it of to be steamed yesterday and after my finally try-on I was so extremely happy with my choice. It’s so me!

Your dress if gorgeous and the fact that you two are making it, makes it even more beautiful.

Please assembly your dress and love it. You will not regret it

hugs!

Miss Sewing, since I started reading about you and Mr. Sewing, everything you two have done has been nothing but perfection! This dress will be nothing different. What a relief it will be for you when you finish and get an overjoyed sensation of why you loved your dress in the first place and the way you feel in it! Can’t wait to see it completed!!! :-)

I went through the same thing making my dress. I eventually had to force myself to do it, but not that it’s in one piece I love it. I’m sure you will too. We’re all rooting for you :)

i’m also doing pickups for my june wedding, which i was told was so terribly out of style, but i freaking love them so could care less about the wedding dress trends! when i picked up my dress i was only disappointed in some of the beading on the train not being as obvious as on the sample, but other than that it was great. i had tried on LOTS of dresses so i knew there was no way anything would be better than mine, but i did stop myself from looking at the racks when i picked mine up just in case!

your dress will be great and all that matters is that you and mr sew love it! can’t wait to see it put together
