Hair Escapades!

March 30th, 2010 @ 1:05 pm by Mrs. Pencils

After the successful makeup trial, I sat for my hair trial. I asked my stylist Bethany to not judge my split ends or my sadly printed inspiration photos and did my best to describe what I was looking for.

I’ve been steadily letting my hair grow since we got engaged in July of 2008 with hopes of a somewhat romantic but not overly soft, feminine but not too “weddingy”, slightly flower child half updo. Not too much of a feat, yeah? Here were the photos I brought along for inspiration:

I love the loose french braid in this look- a lot.

I was also looking for a combo of the next two. This front:

With this back:

Bethany worked with the bottom two images first, and we ended up with a great looking ’do. We braided a small braid close to my head with my side bangs, and did a twisty overlap thing in the back.

I feel awkward while people do my hair, so I make awkward faces and do awkward things like take photos:

We liked the look, but agreed that I need more hair around my ears to offset my roundish/heart shaped face:

The back was beautiful though!

With the pins I bought off Etsy:

And with the veil (and a classic Pencils face- please don’t be sick of my insanity yet):

Bethany then handed me off to Dawn, who worked with the first photo to recreate the braided half updo. We kept the small braid close to my front and she worked that hair into the larger braid:

We went for the deconstructed ending at first, below:

The she added two small loops, below:

Then we tried one large loop, below:

It looked more finished, but I feel it’s really “weddingy”. What do you think?

We didn’t go for staying power, and here it is two hours later:

Pencils’ trial tip: Ask your stylists to do your hair exactly as they would the day of, if they have time. We didn’t spend extensive time on getting curls that stay, or braiding straight, and the hair fell flat pretty quickly.

So, hive, what do you think? Which ’do do you prefer?

Love the first five photos but agree that you need more hair around the ear area :)

I like the larger braid but without the loop or loops…Is that possible?? Either way, it looks gorgeous and I love your flower hair pins!!!

I really love the larger braid with the deconstructed ending. I like the loops fine, but they are kind’ve wedding-y and you said you weren’t looking for that. Your hair looks gorgeous in all of these pictures, though!

I voted for B, it looked really loose and pretty.

i really like the first one. if you’re worried about the hair volume, maybe ask them to “poof”/”bump” the hair so that it looks lik e you have more hair…just a suggestion

I have to agree on the loops, they look out of place or like there should be something else with them. I love the first two, maybe with a little height and a little bit by your ears.

omg I love your facial expressions :)

I did a braid thing for my hair, and I have this to recommend:
To give the braid more body, try an inside-out french braid.
And definitely try making the braid (be it regular or inside-out) loose and chunky - it will help create a more natural look (as opposed to the “wednesday braid” ‘do)

I loveeee the small braids. But I agree that you would need some more stuff around your ears. You look lovely in all the pics though! Whatever you pick will look great :)

LOVE the curly back/bottom!! You look stunning with your hair down/curled and will look fantastic Pencils! I’m not a fan of the braid look just cuz I personally think it looks too casual/childlike lol but especially since the hair is too much off your face - and round faces especially need a little side swept bangage or something. It seems like you’re looking for something loose and flowy, and the braid seems to “tighten” the hair close to your head.

Perhaps some sideswept bangs with a “bump” which I think would add some volume up top - offsetting a round baby face. These pictures will illustrate:

You can also incorporate the braid if you’d like since I know you mentioned you really liked it!! Your thoughts Pencils?

I like the first look with a little more hair by your ears. Why does that first sentence sound so weird, LMAO?!

Your hair is so long and beautiful! I am soooo jealous! And I also like the first pick…the one loop…reminds me of the pony tails I’d give myself to avoid the tail whipping around in gym class…the first pick is so much more beautiful!

Your hair is so shiny and long, I love it! I like the first style best I think, but agree a little more volume near the ears - maybe you could just start the braids a little lower and do what Bearcub suggested and keep ‘em loose/chunky? Either way though, your hair is beeeautiful (and I agree the loops are sort of odd/weddingy).

Along with everyone else, first look with more oomph around the ears and face! Your hair is so shiny - beautiful!

You have such long lovely hair! I am not digging the loops in any form, I think option 1 is the most flattering with a little more volume around the face (and I feel your round face pain!)
