Mrs. Oyster, Dallas Age and Occupation: 30, Music Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 46, Art Teacher Engagement Date: January 9, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: The Tower Club About Me: I'm a Texa-Californian with a penchant for sparkly things and a tendency to think a lot. I've been known to sing random songs or dance when there is no music on. My fiance and I love world culture, we love to travel, and we have an incredibly eclectic taste in music. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate our marriage with our family & closest friends. We're planning an “urban black-tie” wedding and hope to incorporate our personalities and some of our own interests. We look forward to a life of love, laughter, good music, beautiful art, and to creating our home together with our four (!) cats.
About Mrs. Oyster

I Never Thought I’d…

March 30th, 2010 @ 9:17 am by Mrs. Oyster

… cry while watching someone else’s wedding video. When I started out with this whole wedding planning thing, there were some things I didn’t allow myself to dream about. I spent today’s wedding planning session actively considering one of them: videography.

I grew up looking at my mom’s wedding pictures, and ever since I was little, I always marveled at how beautiful she looked and how young she was. My mom looks great at any age, but she just looked so bridal. It’s amazing! The photos are even more important now since my father passed away.

It sounds far reaching, but often when I think of my wedding I think of how it will look in 30 years, when my husband & I can barely remember trying to choose a dress or a venue or a shade of pink, when our kids are grown and showing these photos to our grandchildren. “Look at those weird clothes!” the kids will say. “Look how young they look!” And we will look at each other and wonder how on earth we were ever so young! And look how naïve we were, taking those vows! So optimistic! So unblemished!

Thinking of my wedding in these terms makes me acutely aware of the moments we’re creating, and how fleeting they are. So of course, I’m in the perfect position to be suckered by a Super8 video.

This one seems particularly poignant; I can imagine them treasuring for years the sound of their voices as they take their vows and then walk back down the aisle. They sound so young! Their choice of song is especially effective.

Kristine and Brent’s Super 8mm Full Coverage Film from Soulbox Productions on Vimeo.

I don’t know that we can work this into our budget, which makes me a little sad. I do plan to put together a musical slideshow of my favorite wedding photos. Will it have the same effect? Hm.

Did you make room in your budget for videography? Why was videography a must-have for you?

I’m using Vanessa McKellar and she’s amazing. I’m getting married in Dallas too, so maybe you need to look into her. :)

No. I love the look of super 8 too, but the film is so expensive that I can’t justify it. If you can’t make it work for you, look into regular videographers. Most should have filters that create the super 8 look and bonus! you get to have sound :)

I know! I keep finding myself crying over other people’s movies too. We finally found someone to work with for videography (an old friend from high school) and he’s thankfully within the budget. I love the look of Super8.

A great cost-saving measure with video is to get the most basic, raw footage package (i.e. no editing at all). They’ll give you the files in electronic form, and then at your 5th anniversary (or 1st, or 10th, or whenever you can afford it), you can take it to get edited into something pretty.

That’s what we’re doing for our October wedding, and it seems to be a great compromise between spending thousands of dollars on a fancy edited video, and simply skipping it!

That is an awesome film. We had my cousin video tape ours (old school, I know, but it was 15 years ago ) Even without the bells and whistles it is sweet, maybe because of the running commentary :)

Lydia what a great idea! If you have a friend who is pretty handy with a camera and wouldn’t feel weird “working” during the wedding they could actually take the raw footage, which would save even more!

I wish we had money for a videographer! I never thought I’d cry at random wedding videos either, but I’m definitely guilty of that from time to time!

I fell hard for Super 8, so we moved some other things around to make room for it in the budget. I knew our videographer was the right choice when I teared up at about half the videos on this website. Plus he’s been used by other bee’s to rave reviews - win win!

I’m very glad we can afford videography, b/c if it wasn’t in the budget, I would have cried and/or forced one of my guests to tape the ceremony at least. My obsession with videography started with me wanting to be able to watch us saying our vows for years to come, then I thought about how cool it would be to watch.. the rest of the day/night and especially all the things we didn’t get to see since we were the bride and groom.

We had videography, just the standard Digital Shoot. It’s great to have because I could only remember snippets of the priest’s homily and the priest was my husband’s uncle. It’s also nice to have the toasts, footage of elderly relatives and footage of our parents who won’t be around forever. I say find room in your budget for some kind of videography even if you can’t make Super 8 work. We are so glad we did, especially since several important people like my husband’s brother and grandparents had to miss the wedding. Also my FIL was given a cancer diagnosis two days after we returned from our honeymoon.

We are using Super 8 - our videographer was actually the first vendor we booked, after the venue. I had fallen in love with her work years ago and couldn’t wait to contact her when the time was right! It was definitely more than what we had budgeted for video, so we shifted other things around to make it work.

I never really wanted a videographer so it’s pretty easy for me to just say no. That is, until I saw a Super 8 video. I can still just say no to traditional videography, but the Super 8 films just makes me squeal.

I very much think the same way that you do Miss Oyster. My whole thought process is that in 50 years from now I want to be able to look back on my wedding photos and see similiarities among my grandchildren’s weddings that I will be attending by then I hope.

In fact, I have gone so far as to keep everything clean, simple and uncomplicated. My vision is a wedding that will still be classic and not show the trends. Thats right I’m resisting the trends.

Initially, I thought an awesome photography package would suffice, but after attending the Dallas Bridal Show and obtaining some sample videos, we decided it was a definite need for a video of our wedding day so we moved things around in our budget to squeeze in a videographer. Also a Dallas Bride, we booked BJ Roman of Roman Video Productions (http://www.romanvideoproductions.com/html_ver/).

There is something so special about super 8. I think its from watching so much of the “Wonder Years” when I was little, but it just makes me so happy when I see it.

I’ve considered just buying a Super 8-style camera for my honeymoon. They have digital ones that mimic the effect, and I love it too!

This video is adorable. I too love the Wonder Years quality of it. I hadn’t planned on wedding videography, but the more I see it the more I think I might want it. On the note of crying at other people’s wedding videos, Mrs. Kitten’s did that to me. Super sweet and memorable!
