Safety First

An uncomfortable issue, for sure, but one worth talking about: wedding insurance.

The quickest way to get me to have a panic attack is to show me the wedding budget, and compare it to what’s actually in our accounts. Sure, we have plans to save up (a whole schedule, in fact), and we aren’t going into debt for our wedding (hooray!) and we have it all planned out. But you know what they say - God laughs when you make plans!

So, now that we’re about to put down some hefty deposits (therefore committing to pay large amounts), we hope God is not laughing too hard. I’m thinking about wedding insurance.

I first found the idea from our interest in the loft/standalone venues, which require liability insurance. But I started looking into cancellation/postponement insurance. I’ve heard so many horror stories — family tragedies, injuries, accidents, freak tornadoes, job losses, etc… I just hate thinking about it! And on top of that, people are forced to cancel and lose their money?! Most of the time in these situations, it’s up to the sympathy of the vendor whether you get your money back or can use it towards a postponement. I thought it would be worth it to buy a little peace of mind.

Have you considered wedding insurance? Who did you go through?

I’m really glad you wrote this bc it reminded me to email our insurance agent about our wedding insurance! Our venue requires it, which is annoying, but at least it lowers my stress level somewhat!

I have been considering this for several months now. It seems like a lot of money - especially if you don’t end up using it! That money could have gone to something useful. BUT if you do need it, it will be a lifesaver and well worth it. A very wise decision. I think I will end up getting it. I think of it this way: I have never and will never travel overseas on vacation without travel insurance…why would I do the same to my wedding?

This is going to sound so dumb: what does it insure?

It’s not dumb at all!

From what I remember, it usually gives you liability protection at the venue (if someone gets drunk, falls, and sues you), and can also kick in if something catastrophic happens that derails your wedding, like if a vendor doesn’t show up, the flowers fall off the truck, etc…. I believe it can also help reimburse you or pay for postponement if something awful happens, like if you or a close relative gets sick.

Wow, good to know - thanks for the heads-up! We currently have the “required” insurance, but not much more than that; may have to check into this.

It’s definitely crossed my mind, Oyster! How much does it typically cost, do you know?

My mom just asked if we were getting it yesterday! She saw some news report about a bridal salon that had gone out business with a name very close to where we bought my dress, and after our venue burning down, I think she started to get worried…

We haven’t purchased it since we’re so close, but I can see it being a good idea…

wow that’s interesting. We DIYed most of our stuff and went with small, local vendors, so i guess it wasn’t really necessary.

Since we’re on our 4th wedding date and paying for everything ourselves, I got wedding insurance through WedSafe. Really the only time it doesn’t cover you is if one of you has a change of heart, otherwise it sounds pretty awesome! It totally put my mind at ease before we paid some rather large deposits. I paid under $300 for a limit up to $25,000! =) I can breathe easy now.

Our venue doesn’t require liability insurance, but I think we’re going to get it anyway for our piece of mind. What if a guest breaks something?! Accidents happen! (especially when alcohol is involved) From my brief research so far, it looks like wedsafe is a big insurer.

We didn’t consider it, but did not think anything serious would happen. Although, I know it is becoming more popular though.
