Videographuuuuuggghhhh…

March 30th, 2010 @ 6:24 pm by Mrs. Scissors

Videographuuuuuggghhhh... : wedding georgia videography Meansau meansau

In the beginning, there was no want for a videographer. I hate my voice recorded, refuse to ever watch a video of myself, and Mr. Scissors is the same way. It tends to really highlight my inner (hell, who are we kidding… OUTER) spaz.

But then, then, then. Then. Then the universe shoves things in my face that I cannot avoid. I see things like this by StillMotion, and my heart aches.

I choke back tears, get a giant lump in my throat, and just am blown away by the power and beauty of this. Power and beauty and wedding film? Same sentence? Oh yeah, I went there. I’m pretty lame and sappy right now.

Here’re also tears and giggles, all rolled into one…

Unfortunately, we did not allot any big bucks for wedding videos. Again, remember, I thought it was pish-posh-hogwash.

The universe has also shown me weddings shot in Super 8 by awesome people like Craig Johnson of Bus 33, and I go wild.

Those are three good examples of things that I love. I’ve been tirelessly looking for more wallet-friendly options that still are in line with our aesthetic and personalities, but, I hate to say it, it’s been a big bust. In comes the failboat, toot toot. I’ve seen things that have sent chills down my spine, but not in the good way—instead in the “nails on a chalkboard” way. I’ll just let you imagine things that I, well, let’s not say hate, but… don’t really mesh well with… other things that I like…

Things that bug me

  1. Anything with “starring”. Deal-breaker. Reminds me too much of the creepy parts of Red Dragon with the Leeds’ family videos.
  2. Creepy fades with shimmer.
  3. Creepy midi music.
  4. Creepy stuff in general.
  5. Barf-gag-cheesy stuff. If I do an overly dramatic eye-roll, it’s bad. I cry at pretty much every wedding video, so that says how un-fond I am of some of the recent things I’ve seen.

At present, it has boiled down to this: The things that we love are out of our price range. I’m still trying to find fledgling indie/hipster videographers that would be more in our range, but it’s not looking good. I may just stick my uncle in the corner (Sorry Joe!) with an HD cam and say, “GO!” Or even just a tripod. Basic and unedited videos rank higher than the super-cheese-or-stuff-that-bugs-me. Dumb opinion? Maybe, but that’s how I roll.

It does not look good for our heroes, kids. The universe might just win this one.

How did you handle videography? Did you know you wanted it from the start and PLAN FOR IT, or did you start freaking out at the end of the planning-road over it? Any advice as to what we should do?

We hired a videographer to film raw footage of the day. I have a background in video editing… so I plan to edit our video myself. That way, I can avoid the “cheese.” :)

We never planned for it. But then we found out my FI’s grandparents weren’t going to be able to come. I decided that I am not interested in the uncle with a handicam standing in the aisle filming. So we started researching and picked one we loved. I said I wasn’t going to do it unless we loved them. And we found one!

I say keep researching til you find one you love and make it in your budget :)

I never planned for videography, since the last wedding video I’d seen (in, um, the ’90s? LOL) was pretty cheesy. Then the cool/retro super8 movies started popping up on the blogs, and I started to wish we had budgeted for that… but when I checked the prices, I realized that coolness comes at STEEP price. :P

So we’re not doing video - and to be honest, I think I’m back to being fine with that.

There is this deal, which is cool, but still ridiculously out of my price range: http://layercakefilms.com/cakeinabox.htm

I’m in the same boat as you. My fiance and I didn’t originally plan for a videographer OR EVEN A PHOTOGRAPHER. We were going to have his photography-student sister take the photos and be done with it. But I eventually realized that I was not okay with that, so all of our extra non-budgeted cash went toward the professional photographer that I decided I had to have. There’s definitely nothing leftover to get a videographer as well. Boo.

Good luck with your search!

Love the 2nd one! The speech is a perfect story line & I choked up when she read the card aloud.

We haven’t budgeted for a videographer…FI is in the film industry & while that might make it seem like we’d WANT to capture these moments on film, it only makes creating what we really want all the more difficult. We originally thought to forgo it, but now are thinking of getting a friend to film & cut together a video - kinda easy when you’re in the business.

But maybe that could be an option for you? Have you looked into local college film festivals to see if you like any film student’s work? They would probably be VERY affordable…

I didn’t want or think I needed videography. I too thought it was “pish-posh-hogwash.”

Then I read your post and watched those videos.

I just txted the FI to let him know that we need to start looking for a videographer, something we did NOT budget for.

Thanks a lot Miss Scissors! :P

ohhh Still Motion how I love you!! If only an amazing wedding video such as still motion didn’t charge 10,000 for a full day video, I might have been able to consider it, even if only for one minute!! haha good luck in your quest for videographer!! there are some great ones out there that don’t cost an arm and a leg!

Beautiful! Our videog was the first vendor we booked (after the venue) - I had been admiring her stuff for yeeeeears (yeah I know that’s crazy), so we shifted things around in the budget to make it work.

Just about everything involved with the wedding industry is a well-oiled machine designed to tug at your emotions so you’ll open your purse-strings. They want you to spend money when you didn’t want to and more money than you planned on. Please, resist the urge to buy into all of their propaganda! You will still be married, even without a videographer.

Yes indeed- the universe is a mean sausage! LOL. You’re hilarious…My advice is to FIND A FILM STUDENT. Now this is exceedingly simple here in LA, but they’ve gotta be everywhere right? A student seems more likely to be cheap/young/hip than some of the cheesy videographers I’ve seen out there! Good luck. Oh! I hate my voice on any type of recording too! Silent film. That’s all I’m saying.

I totally thought all wedding videos were cheese (mainly because I thought ALL videos were cheese, in part because I starred in at least once a year–Christmas, dance recitals, etc, while I was a child)….and then I saw one on Style Me Pretty that made me literally stop in my tracks.
Sadly, videography around here is literally half of what we’re paying our (amazing) caterer to feed 125 people, so it is out. :( Keep checking around for students though as I’ve heard some great things about their costs!

I had to have something! Just for the fact that Fi’s grandfather was an NBC cameraman 50+ years ago had they have color footage of his family in NYC in the 40’s, color! it is INCREDIBLE to see his family way back then, amazing, I love watching it. I want my grandkids to see us on our wedding day, and keep passing it on. I wish I could see footage of my parents and my grandparents.

I found a great ‘wedding cinematographer’ (as he calls himself) for less then 2k - perfect!

I kind of know exactly how you feel. We considered just hiring someone to do raw video, that we could edit ourselves later (much later), or hire someone to edit when we had more money, just to make sure we had a recording. In the end, I realized that I didn’t really want a super artistic video–I just wanted documentation. In 20 years, I won’t care if it’s cheesy; I’ll just want to show my kids their grandma getting her boogie on.

I’m on the verge of handing a camcorder to someone trustworthy and calling it a day. I didn’t plan for videography because I had only seen cheesy ones, then the wedding blogosphere had to go and introduce me to Super 8. I’ve had to stop looking at people super awesome Super 8 wedding videos and just try to forget about them. It’s not working so well.

I never wanted videography until I began to see it on WB. Now I wish we could afford it, but I do not want to re-work the budget just to fit it in.

We planned for it, and we went for Super 8 as well. We wanted so badly to have StillMotion do it, but they are waaaaay out of our price range. Oh well, we’ll have to be happy with our vintage 70s-esque videography. le sigh!
