Mrs. Argyle's Picture
Mrs. Argyle, St. Louis Age and Occupation: 24, Project Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Pilot Engagement Date: February 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Jewel Box in Forest Park and Windows on Washington About Me: I'm a true Midwestern girl (born and raised), lover of red wine, reality TV and the entire J.Crew catalog. I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.
About Mrs. Argyle

I decided pretty early I did not want to spend money on flowers, so deciding on our centerpieces took quite a bit of time. I mean, the original plan was to include tall cylinder vases with submerged callas or something similar (see: early in my planning). And, then our second idea was to some how hang them from wooden dowels - an idea we scrapped after finding some great options online.

The Mr. and I (yes, the both of us) immediately fell in love with these pictures when looking around for flower alternatives:

Our venue is no stranger to hanging paper lanterns. They still have hooks stuck to the ceiling from previous events. But, we’d be doing something a bit different. Instead of hanging the lanterns randomly through the space, we would have clusters of lanterns hanging directly over half of our tables, creating a “tall” centerpiece of sorts, complete with an array of candles on the table. My concern was how large could we go with the lanterns without them falling on the tables during dinner (and creating a disaster)? So, after meeting with our awesome event designer, Erin at Exclusive Events, we were assured that it shouldn’t be an issue, but it might be a good idea to test it out either at home, or in our reception space. I opted to hang them at home, that way we could leave them up for a while. Take a look for yourself:

Cluster of three. The tables that we will hang these over will probably have 5 to 7, but you get the point.

That red wall sure coordinates well! That was so not planned, I promise.

We hung these about 5 weeks ago, and still have yet to take them down (can we say lazy?). We have to avoid them each time we grab food for the dogs. Whoops! At least we know the hooks will hold, hah.

So, what are we doing for the other half of our tables, you ask? Good question. I don’t know yet. I’m hoping my creative juices flow in the next 6 months (and that I don’t procrastinate).

How did you decide on your centerpieces? Did you want a mix of high and low, or for them to be all the same?

Nice orange; they look great all together. I definitely wanted calla lilies and branches for my centerpieces, so I kinda had to go tall :D

I love the colors of the paper lanterns. I’ve definitely never seen anything like your centerpieces before, so you definitely will wow your guests. :)

Are you using 3M hooks? Where did you get them? We’re having a few parties at my house and don’t want to tape anything to the walls.

@Ms. E: Thanks! That’s what we were going for, and we wanted it to seem fun!

@Miss Starfish: Kudos to flowerless centerpieces!

@MOHmama: Yup! We used 3M hooks that I bought at Target (and they have literally been hanging for 5 weeks). So they are strong and don’t ruin the walls!

So cute! We were going to do flowerless, but it turns out that using a few hydrangea buds was about the same price as all the containers, candles, and misc stuff.
If our final price comes in too high, I might just do manzita branches in the tall centerpieces. I would then do small pomander and put it in the middle - I’ve seen a few online that are beautiful…

The pic that you posted with the picnic table and the white lanterns is sooo pretty! I am kind of a flower-holic so I won’t be going the flowerless route, but your idea of clustering the lanterns above the tables is going to look amazing, especially with the colors!

Such a cute idea and yay for strength on hanging up for extended amount of time! I’m a flower-centerpiece gal and will vary those in height.

@Ella1978: You could probably get away with doing a mixture of both!

@Miss Buttons: I want to see it in action, too, haha. Especially with whatever we decide for our “lows.”

@Miss Cola: And, they are definitely still hanging there!
