Two Steps Forward…

March 31st, 2010 @ 6:24 pm by Mrs. French Fries

A few weeks back I was organizing all of the glass candy jars that I had collected for our centerpieces. I patted myself on the back for being so organized, and for having things done so far ahead of time. I had about 12 jars total, and was in the process of determining which candy would go into which jars. I was sitting on my couch, working hard on the task at hand (…I was also watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians re-runs) when all of a sudden, our 40 pound ”puppy” Braeden jumped up onto the couch next to me.

Trust me, usually he’s flying around the house like the Road Runner.

The motion of him jumping up on the couch sent two of the jar lids crashing down to the floor…shattering three of my glass candy jars.

Of course, they were three of my favorites that I had collected so far. After making sure that Braeden was okay (there was glass everywhere), I cleaned up all of the glass and reassessed my situation. And, I’m not going to lie… tears formed in my eyes.

I couldn’t help but feel like I had just taken two steps backward. Yes, I can see now that in the grand scheme of things, having to go buy more glass candy jars is a miniscule problem. But at the time, knowing that we had very few free weekends until the wedding and limited funds from which to buy new jars, it just seemed like one more thing to add to an already insurmountable list. A huge problem. Something that had to be dealt with rightthisverysecond. Big thanks goes out to Mr. FF for calming me down and helping me realize that this wasn’t, in fact, the end of the world (not even remotely in the same universe close).

I’m happy to report: I found new glass jars, and I found them at an awesome price. I checked out my local TJMaxx and in one trip found three jars for about $3.99 apiece! Not only that, but I actually like two of the new jars better than two of the ones that got broken. Oh, and the other thing that I found? A reminder of what’s really a “crisis” and what’s just a temporary inconvenience.

So! In case anyone is in the same predicament that I was in, I compiled a short ‘n sweet list of stores that I’ve used to find glassware (for cheap!) for our wedding:

  • TJMaxx
  • Home Goods
  • World Market — I’d say a good 1/3 of our jars came from here!
  • Old Time Pottery
  • Target – check their home decorating section
  • Goodwill / Salvation Army — although depending on when and where you go, this can be hit or miss

Good luck in your hunt!

Have you encountered any minor setbacks in wedding planning that, at the time, seemed like insurmountable problems?

Oh no! I am so sorry! I wanted to tell you, I have my pup, his name is Killian and hes a sheltie, looks just like your little guy! And he would do something like to me. He has been watching me throughout this whole wedding planning and watching all the decorations I buy and start to decorate….(I am doing mason jars) I think he’s plotting or something…can’t help but love them though :) Happy planning!

ps: I have hit up all the same stores as you! Michaels has a lot as well and they are having a big sale next week 40-50% off!

We have all been there Miss FF! I had a ‘moment’ when we were trying to pick out our invitations and thanks to my FI (aren’t they great?!) he made me realize how minor the situation really was and now I look back and laugh.

I’m glad you found your 3 glass jars!

I had a couple freakouts related to personnel (unresponsive vendor, dress-trying-on and ordering, groomsman possibly not being able to make it, etc.)

…then I tried to realize it wasn’t a big deal and I made it through. I’m hoping I don’t have any more freakouts and I’m sure Mr. Taco does, too!

Bah! Sounds like my dog, she knocked over a full glass of orange juice this morning, ate her way through the dirty clothes, and accidentally jumped on the bed and woke up “daddy” with her paws in his boy parts… all while I was in the shower.

I definitely understand the feeling of tearing up at things that other people would see as minuscule. Wedding planning is so emotional!

Also, what a sweet puppy :) Poor thing just wanted to be near you!

Ahh! That’s terrible! I’m glad you found new ones you like though! I totally feel for you. I’m doing a candy bar too and my dad was helping me unload some stuff from my car when he dropped the bag holding my favorite glass jar, and it shattered all over the driveway! I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but I totally cried!

Almost this exact same thing happened to me! My mother and I had just gone to the store and bought all of the glass vases I would need for my centerpieces. There were too many of them to put them all on the floorboard of my car, so some of them had to go on the seat. I was driving very carefully when all of a sudden this car started swerving into my lane! I had to slam on my brakes to avoid being hit, and all but one of my vases flew off the back seat. Two of them shattered. I hadn’t even owned them for 30 minutes! I. WAS. PISSED. To say the least.

I’m so sorry you had to deal with this! I’m sure you’ll find new perfect jars and your display will still be amazing. But I know how much this sucks!

I’m on my 2nd Sheltie, and neither could ever make the couch. So he’s actually a bit of a prodigy! But sorry about the broken glassware. :(

Another TJ Maxx girl, LOVE IT. Sounds like puppy didn’t think those particular jars were right for the wedding. It was his way of saying, go buy more!

Awww so glad you found even better glassware (and that puppy is ok!) Nice store list too, I’m going to have to take a look at TJ Maxx.

I’m so glad that everything worked out in the end and no pups were injured in the process! I had a similar candy buffet crisis - I had found this great (and rather expensive) apothecary jar for one of our candy buffet jars - but we had to move in January and the base of it cracked and we had to throw the whole thing out. Total bummer!

And another setback: our invitations were delivered yesterday but the envelope liners don’t fit the envelopes! GAH!! I know it will be an easy fix with a template and a paper cutter, but it’s just one more thing to stress about…
