Mr. Starfish hasn’t had too many demands or even requests when it comes to the wedding, but he knew for sure he wanted magnets for our save the dates. I don’t know what it is with guys, but it seems like it’s always the guys who want the magnets. I’ve had guy friends come up to me so proud that they “found” this great wedding idea, and by found, I mean they received one from someone else’s wedding. I think Mr. Starfish found this idea on my brother’s fridge.
I wanted an excuse to share our engagement pics, so I was all for the magnets. I was also super excited to use one of my favorite quotes from When Harry Met Sally. Thus came my vision for our save the date magnets.

It seems as though, when planning a wedding, once you cross one item off of your list, five more crop up in its place. One of my newest items to figure out? What the heck to wear for our engagement pictures.
Yes, ’tis true — we’ve been engaged for 18 months and we haven’t had our engagement pictures taken yet. Well, actually my sister took one set right when we were first engaged, and they turned out fabulously. Want to see a couple?

Wow, has it really been two whole weeks since I wrote a post? Sorry, guys! This whole “finishing up my recaps” thing has been harder than I thought. I have a couple of posts I’d like to share with you before I finish up my recaps, though, so I’m gonna take a break and work on those if that’s alright with you. We cool? I promise, I’ll throw in some pretty pictures to help keep it interesting.
One of the things I wanted to share with you is our version of the whole name change debacle. I know many lovely bee ladies before me have written on the subject, but I’m pretty sure no one has made the crazy decision we did. What can I say? We’re kinda weirdos, if you haven’t already gathered from our theater space ceremony, our subway ride in my designer wedding gown, or our choreographed Dirty Dancing throwback first dance.
We had a couple of factors working in our case:

As a person planning a wedding - the most photographed moment of my life - I have a bit of an interest in what my body will look like that day. I don’t think I’m overweight, but I do tear through half a package of Oreos every month or so.
I am really lazy. My apartment building has a gym. It’s on my floor. Do I go there? Sometimes… and then I quit for two months. I know there aren’t any quick fixes, but I still want to believe! So when I noticed there was a Bikram yoga studio a block from my building, I gave it a shot.
I know there are some Bikram fanatics in the hive, so I mean no offense, but this class was… different.

My first bridesmaid dress plan tanked. Remember, I had put a deposit down on some used Twobirds designer dresses I found on the Weddingbee classifieds? Well, the bride I was getting them from no longer had the size B I needed for one of my ‘maids. The full price the dresses, at over $300, are waaaay out of our price range, so, I got my deposit back, and then it was back to the drawing board.
I found out there’s still time (barely) to order dresses from Aria, so I went to the Pasadena store yesterday and tried on about 50 different styles. It was actually pretty fun. I had the whole salon to myself for two hours, with one assistant who willingly snapped front and back pictures of each dress I tried on! I loved them all! The Paisley ‘maids are picking out any style they like, and now it’s up to me to pick a color and a fabric.
Here’s an inspiration board I made of me wearing my favorite Aria dress at the moment––the eyelet lace in powder blue. I included pictures of some of my wedding things to show how the colors will go well together:

My latest wedding inspiration comes from an unlikely source – a Christmas gift given to one of my friends by her sister. BM LC’s sister made her family personalized wine charms for Christmas. I liked them so much that I decided they are a must for our winery wedding! I am thinking of using them as escort card holders, like Mrs. Penguin did at her wedding:
I’ve talked about Mr. Veggie’s outfit, the veggie dudes’, and the bridesmaids’. I’ve posted about the veggie sprouts. But, I haven’t talked much yet about my dress. Maybe I’ve been avoiding the subject because it is steeped in inner conflict. Let me set the scene.
A well-intentioned me sits at my computer surfing the web for wedding ideas. On one of my shoulders (shall we say the left shoulder) sits a beautiful eco angel. She whispers encouraging words in my ear and fills my head with lovely wedding-day dreams. A petroleum-covered slug sits on the other. The eco angel is winning the battle. She is armed with our electronic save-the-dates, our local and organic inspired menu, and our beautiful travel-minimizing venue. But the petro-slug isn’t done yet. He has an armament too. What card could he possibly hold that might pull me out of my eco wedding bliss?
He has Lazaro LZ3700.

For me, it wasn’t just about the wedding dress, it was about each and every one of the dresses I would wear to all the wedding activities. Early in the planning process, I started scouting out dresses to wear even though I wasn’t exactly sure what purpose they would serve. This might have been a little dangerous, but I don’t have a dress in my closet I haven’t found a purpose for yet, so I feel good about it.
So, the major activities I have coming up are: the bachelorette party, the rehearsal dinner and the wedding after party.
First up, the bachelorette party:

They (and by “they,” I mostly mean my fiancé) told me it would happen. I’d plan, plan, plan, obsess over details, then obsess over more details once the first details were attended to. And I would plan on repeating this process for a year.
Then, miraculously, I’d stop thinking about it, given the 5 months we have left until Go Time.
Diving wholeheartedly into non-wedding life (including the freelance jobs I’ve taken for some extra cash-moneys) turns out to be a lot more satisfying than obsessing over the napkins.
I often find myself thinking more about being married than about being a “bride”. And it’s a nice transition of thought, helped largely by winning examples of married friends. Once I stopped thinking about the registry, the food, the wine, and the new signature I need to perfect, thinking about being this guy’s wife really makes my day.

So originally, I was 100% about the milk glass for our centerpieces, but I started thinking that I wanted to supplement them with something else for a more eclectic look. While flipping through Domino: The Book of Decorating, I spotted this little detail in one of the rooms:
Um, hello missing piece! Thanks again, Domino! (P.S. I miss you!) I’ve always loved silver, but I had never really thought about combining it with milk glass. After seeing this picture, I am determined to make it work! I love silver and I love milk glass. So really, this is just me, approaching our wedding style in the same way that I do my personal style or my decorating style. Instead of letting myself get stuck in a matchy box, with swatch cards always in hand, I choose to combine everything I’m drawn toward, random things that make my heart happy. I’ve never designed a wedding, but this usually seems to work for me. So I guess I’m crossing my fingers! Hopefully our wedding style will be totally unique and representative of the Turtles’ tastes, rather than one big sloppy mess.
So despite the not-yet-fully-unpacked state of our awesome new house we managed to bust out the crafting implements and go to town on our uber-amazing and super fantastic STDs yesterday. We even found an open post office and tossed these babies in the mail, and now I’m super excited to reveal them in all their colorific glory!
I’m going to save the details for my next post and just get right to the gory glorious STD porn already, mkay? Sorry for the visual overload but our STDs are real camera whores! ![]()

Blocking the rooms has been one of the most stressful parts of planning so far. Blocking rooms in a tourist town is great because you have lots of options. But… with that comes some not-so-great things. For example, these hotels don’t need our business like, say, a hotel in a random suburb. So what does that mean? Well… we had trouble finding hotels that would give our guests discounts and/or would allow guests to stay only one night.
After my first two calls, I realized this wasn’t going to be easy. So with my list of requirements in hand, I got to calling and emailing every place I could find within 5 miles of Newport.
My requirements were simple.
Like most people, I suffer from the malady of time passing faster as I get older. When I finished my recaps half a year had passed since our wedding. In the blink of an eye, another half year was gone, and we’d made it to the one-year mark. Last September, we celebrated our paper anniversary in a quiet cliff-top house on Orcas Island, eating wedding cake and watching Fight Club. (Why Fight Club? Don’t ask… I’ve no idea. As for the cake, it was actually DELICIOUS. Ya just have to store it right!)
Aside from cards, cake, and champagne, we only really had one special thing planned…a Trash the Dress shoot with our friend and fabulous wedding photographer, Kate McElwee. I didn’t want to actually “trash” my dress because I had just had it cleaned and was coming to terms with the idea of someday selling it. (I still might. Soon.) I really just wanted an excuse to put it on and feel like a bride again… to celebrate our wedding in style. So that’s what we did!
