So, Mr. Fro Yo and I do a lot of outdoor activities. Nearly every day we take our dogs for a hike, and this past weekend we also went kayaking. I love doing all of these things, but every time we go for a hike, kayaking or just out to the lake, I take off my engagement ring, and I imagine I’ll do the same once I get my wedding ring. It always makes me a little sad and I wish that I had something that I could wear on our outings that I wouldn’t worry about losing or damaging.
Then I stumbled on these:

They are absolutely perfect and could be made with any of the wood that we have all around us.
The groom made them for he and his new wife, so I figured maybe Mr. Fro Yo could do the same.
Waaay back when we were newly affianced, we discussed making our own invitations. I even went so far as to order paper samples from Paper =Source.
I can sense what you’re thinking: “C’mon PChipz. C’mon. Get your head out of your ass.”
Fair enough. We quickly realized we lacked the necessary talent (and time) for such a complicated endeavor. So we sought the help of a brilliant artist. We’re in the midst of finalizing the proof, so for now I’ll leave you with a sneaky peaky.

You may be able to guess the artist (she’s not exactly a stranger to the ‘bee). I must say, she’s as talented as she is snappy.

I’ve let you all in on how Mr. Pencils and I had planned to actually make our wedding bands ourselves. This past weekend, we did it!
It was the ultimate DIY—we spent our Saturday with an amazing Virginia jeweler, who had his own shop at his house. He showed us the ropes, but mainly made us walk the ropes ourselves! It was an intense, fun, exhilarating, awesome day, and in the end we had our wedding rings!
We were both so jazzed at the end of the day that I made Mr. Pencils proclaim his excitement to the world (and roll up his window when I was cold! Hee hee):
We began quite excited about the day:
In my last calligraphy post, I introduced the lovely script that we chose for our invitations (That’s the royal “we”, not that group decision “we”. Mr. Hammy had no preference really). To review, we chose the Formal Script:
And here is the finished product!

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
My original plan for our faux-tobooth was to borrow a Polaroid camera, hang up a piece of fabric, and let people sort it out for themselves. I realized there were some logistics to sort out, but I really had no idea how we were going to do it. Luckily, our awesome friends, Katie and Ben, volunteered to bring their camera and equipment and set up a much more professional booth for us. I provided the fabric (three yards from Jo-Ann’s), and a Goodwill chalkboard, and they took care of everything else.
We got some pretty amazing photos out of it, so I’m really glad we went this route. Our photographers offer a faux-tobooth package, but it was cheaper (free!) to go this route, and this also meant we didn’t have to sacrifice one of our shooters to the faux-tobooth for the whole night.
Not everyone took photos, but we did get a lot of great shots.
Here are the family shots:

Previously I showed you what all of my flowers look like. By that time, I had also finished all of my BM bouquets and the tossing bouquet (I am keeping the one you’re about to see). But there was still a lot of details to complete on my bouquet, because I wanted the bottom to look like this!

I looove burlap! In my room in Chile I had tons of things made of burlap. I love the rustic feel and the soft brown texture, so to me, burlap was the very first idea that came to my mind when I was thinking about how to make the bottom of my bouquet. Luckily I brought some leftover pieces of burlap from Chile, and it was the perfect size!

After my traumatizing dental experience I was feeling refreshed and ready to tackle my last few DIY projects (the painkillers also helped to push progress along!) and I knew I had to get some things out of the way before Mama Cloud and my MOH got into town at the beginning of the week. With exactly one week until the wedding, I needed to get the bridal party gifts wrapped and hidden out of the way. Up first were gifts for my girls!
I was so lucky to be surrounded by seven of my closest girlfriends on my wedding day, both college and high school friends, cousins, sorority sisters and my new sister in law—all women who have been there for me through my happiest and hardest times. I didn’t know if I would be able to thank them enough for everything they have done for me both during the wedding planning and before. So, for months I felt like Oprah collecting items for her “favorite things” episode. Too bad I’m not absurdly rich or I would have given them cars like she does! Instead, I was a poor bride on a budget and they ended up with goodies on a much smaller price scale.

When I teach art to my students, I emphasize that there’s no such thing as a mistake. You can always turn it into something. If you do that a few more times on your piece, it’ll look like you did it on purpose. It’s a happy accident.
Well, I had a happy accident the other day. Over the weekend, Mr. Lace and I, after determining we needed to kick wedding planning into high gear, decided to take a look at tuxes. By the time we finished all our previous engagements and were ready to go it was 5. I decided to call ahead and check the closing times on two of the tux shops we were going to visit. The first one closed at 5 (of course). With my fingers crossed, I called the second shop. They were open until 9. We got there, sat down with the sales rep, looked through the tuxes and were out of there in 20 minutes. We ran a couple of other errands and then decided we should stop for dinner before heading back to Mr. L’s place.
We threw out a couple of places, went back and forth and finally decided on Panera Bread. It was the healthiest option in the area and we had just started our wedding diets and didn’t want to break them so quickly. While parking, I saw a wee little bookstore.

I needed a focus for all of my wedding anxiety, so I picked the DJ. I was afraid that she wouldn’t show up on the day of and I wouldn’t know until it was too late, and we’d have no music. I acknowledged that this was completely irrational, but I clung to my fear. We booked the DJ with The Pros, a big corporation that wouldn’t let us contact our DJ in advance (the one DJ who specializes in the Bhangra music we wanted at the wedding), but every contract we had said that she was “confirmed”, so I made our final payment over the weekend.
Last night, our DOC called me and told me she got a phone call from someone at The Pros, saying that our DJ is unavailable and I have to choose between one of the two remaining DJs left unbooked Los Angeles for our fast approaching wedding date—let’s call them BoyBand and PipSqueak, neither of whom have any background in Bhangra music. With our wedding day coming so soon, I don’t have time to get the music and make the playlist for them!
Why they called our DAY OF COORDINATOR (I told them to add her as a contact for the day of only, but that didn’t stop them from calling her instead of the person who just paid them, go figure), I couldn’t tell you, but since The Pros is based on the East Coast, there was no one to take my call at that hour.

Last week, while surfing around on the web, I found this.

In case you are wondering, that little beauty is a dog collar. Now, before you go roll your eyes at me, let me explain something.
When last we met on the subject of invites, I was working out some kinks. Suffice it to say, the kinks have been worked out because I got the letterpress portion of my invites in the mail last week!
I never revealed the final design, so here it is.
So, I packaged this design in InDesign and sent it off to my letterpress printer, Lucky Duck Press. He’s reasonably priced and easy to work with, so it was a pretty simple process. About a month later, I got my 50 invites and envelopes back. Without further ado, our invites.

When we originally started to plan, we wanted to invite everyone who had been an important part of our lives and our families’ lives. Our guest list was enormous. As time went by, we started setting up our priorities. We both want the wedding to be about the joining of two families. We felt a more intimate wedding would allow us to really enjoy the special moments with our closest family and friends.
In the beginning we stressed about hurting peoples’ feelings and didn’t want to leave anyone out. But if we invited more people, it would mean less time with those who are the most important to us. Our guest list began at over 350 people. We ended up getting it down to about 200 people. That is not what some would call intimate, but when you come from a large family and Christmas includes about 100 people, this is quite a cozy wedding in my eyes.

If only this post were about putting some pimpin’ into our invites—it’s more of a putting-hassle-and-stress into ‘em.
The one part of the invitation design process that I have loathed is the whole response card mess. It has been the beast that has spurned 1,000 arguments, sleepless hours, and just general angry thoughts in the past week.
Over a week ago, I thought I was 100% finished with the meat of the invitation design––all I had left to do was decide on ink color and all that jazz. I sent the proofs to my mother and Mr. Scissors for a thorough run-down.

Today I’m gonna reveal my DIY bouts and how I made them! I’m getting better at the picture-taking-thing, but I didn’t snap a few of the steps. They’re pretty easy, though!
(Disclaimer! Sorry about the poor photo quality in these pictures! I’ve been using the camera on my Blackberry because something is wrong with the memory card in my actual camera!)
First, I gathered all my supplies.

Since we live in a teensy apartment, I don’t really have a crafting space. So I use our bar.
