About Mrs. Trail Mix

Didn’t See That Coming…

April 1st, 2010 @ 5:11 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

For as long as I’ve been dreaming of my wedding (and I’ll be honest, it was long before I got engaged. I was totally that girl), I’ve always pictured my ceremony outside. I based our entire venue search around that criteria.

Nature is the only thing that inspires any sort of spirituality within me and is what moves me (sometimes to tears, although given my emotional state lately, that’s not saying that much).

So when I went to out venue walk-through with our on-site coordinator at the Tannery Pond, it was to figure out where was the best place to hold the outdoor ceremony, as well as work out logistics for the reception tent. Just to cover all my bases, the coordinator showed me our back-up ceremony location, if there’s bad weather.

And, my friends, I was shocked to realize that I kinda, sorta, maybe fell in love with it.

The Tannery is this incredible, old Shaker building with exposed wooden beams, tons of small-paned windows, long wooden benches and the smell of cedar in the air. It’s rustic without being cliche and simple but oh-so-gorgeous.

Not to mention the fact that the elements of rain or wind (Fire? Earth? Captain Planet? Anyone, anyone?) would become much less of a factor if we held the ceremony inside the Tannery. There’s even a piano we can use for the processional and recessional music.

This dilemma of indoors vs outdoors has left me lying awake in bed long past my bedtime for the last two nights. I’ve always dreamed of an outdoor ceremony; that’s the one constant in my long-changing wedding daydreams that started pretty much when Mr Trail Mix and I began dating. Yet, here is this incredible indoor location staring me in the face, almost begging me to use it. I never in a million years expected this to happen, I’ve been set on an outdoor ceremony since Day One of planning.

Perhaps some pictures will help me make up my mind. Let’s start with the Tannery building itself…

All pictures are courtesy of Jane Feldman, who is the director of events at the Tannery Pond as well as a local event photographer. (Brides in the Albany/Hudson Valley area, take notice! She’s awesomely talented!)

Here’s the best shot I have of the entire space. Note the beautiful small-paned windows that run the entire length of both side walls. We would do some type of floral decorations for the aisles. Possibly (fingers crossed) my florist could still do the shepherd’s hooks with hanging jars of flowers like we had planned for an outdoor ceremony.

This couple chose to keep their altar very simple, in keeping with the spirit of the building. We would have our birch chuppah, some floral decorations and possibly small, white Christmas lights as well.

The window’s on the left side of the building face west, allowing all the afternoon light to pour through, which almost makes it feel like you’re outdoors (and turns out some lovely pictures.)

Plus, if we use the Tannery building, I can make (or have our florist make) hanging wreaths, which I’m obsessed with. And there’s an entryway space just begging for some decorations (tissue paper flowers, hanging vintage scarves, organza flowers, oh the possibilities!).

And we could still do all our pictures outside, if the weather’s decent, which means we could get shots like these…

Now before we all jump on the “Trail Mix should definitely get married inside the Tannery” bandwagon, let’s look at a few pictures taken from another wedding held outdoors by the pond…

See, now I’ve managed to change your minds again with that series, huh? Now do you understand the tossing and turning in bed at night, trying to make this decision?

Just for fun, a few more pictures of our incredible venue…

Obviously, I can’t really go wrong, since both options are breathtaking (in my humble opinion). But I’m really torn about where to hold the ceremony. If we choose to use the Tannery building, then the cocktail hour will be in the garden by the pond, which would also be lovely (if we use the area by the pond for the ceremony, the cocktail hour will be in the field. Also lovely. But not quite the same ambience, since it’s a wider space).

So, dear readers, I am interested in hearing your opinions on what you think I should do. Will I regret doing an indoor ceremony if my dream and vision has always been an outdoor ceremony? If you had an outdoor ceremony, are you happy with that decision? Which would you choose?

I like both!
But, I’m personally partial to the indoors because it removes a lot of added stress that is inherent to an outdoor wedding (rain, sun, wind, temperature, sunburn) and still allows you to use your favorite part of the outdoor venue for the cocktail hour.
Not to make your decision more difficult, but if you get rained out and have to use the indoor room, where is your cocktail hour then? Just curious :-)

The outdoors is very pretty - especially in the autumn - you picked a fantastic venue! I like the outside very much but that indoors location is visually stunning. Simply gorgeous. You wouldn’t have to worry about weather, and an outdoors cocktail hour by the lake would be breathtaking! I’m just thinking of all the great decorating you could do inside! Plus, it might be more comfortable all around for your guests. Honestly, I LOVE the inside of that tannery. And the really great thing is you can do so many lovely things with the outdoors during the reception and cocktail hour too. Indoors is definitely my vote! It is inspiring some serious venue jealousy in me!

Definitely outdoors! I can see the appeal of the indoor location and I’d probably be having a tought time making the decision as well. To me there is just something about getting married outside and communing with nature. I too have always wanted a wedding outdoors and I think I’d be disappointed if I didn’t go with my original intentions.

Personally I’d do it inside. I don’t know why but outdoor weddings don’t have the same affect on me. I think the indoors venue gives you more decorating options and safe of mind if the weather turns foul. Just because it was your original desire doesn’t mean it is what will work best for you. What does Mr T Mix think? Can he help you with this decision?

They’re both gorgeous! I chose to do indoors partially because of when I am getting married (January), and partially because of the ridiculous unpredictable weather in Texas. I didn’t want to be worry about rain, snow, whatever, so I just chose to not even have to stress about the weather!
And don’t forget, even if you have the ceremony indoors you can always get some awesome outdoor photos!

I’m picking outdoors if it were my decision! The Tannery just seems so dark and cramped to me while outside feels sooooo open! Either way they are both stunning!

Oh gosh, I don’t know how you’ll decide! (Sorry, that wasn’t helpful). They’re both so gorgeous. If you have it indoors, you can still do so many pictures outside, and perhaps have a part indoor/outdoor reception?

As a fellow childhood Captain Planet watcher, I just had to pop a comment to say: “When our powers combine…” :-) I bet Captain Planet would have a solution for you. He always knew what was right.

Outside all the way! Unless of course the weather does not permit.

I think you have a great situation here. I say do the outdoors ceremony like you’ve always wanted, but you’ll be secure knowing that you have a backup location that you also love (I doubt most outdoor brides have this). Modify the decor so that it would work in both spaces so that you can move inside at the last minute if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

My friend was married at Tannery Pond a few years ago. It was awesome!

Both options are so gorgeous! But I always lean towards outdoors, with the inside location as a back up plan!

Though both options are totally gorgeous, I would go with the outside option. I always lean towards the outdoor option, so I may be a bit biased! But especially if you have been lusting after an outdoor wedding for a long time, I think you should have just that!!

I’d say outdoors. If that is what you have always envisioned than you know you can’t go wrong with it. If it rains, than you know you’ll be happy with the back up location. With it outdoors I think you won’t feel as worried about decorating it. I think the outdoor location looks wonderful. We had our ceremony outside and it was great, I was almost sad notto make use of the back-up chapel space cuz it was nice too. But still glad the weather was clear. Most important thing is know - BOTH OPTIONS ARE GOOD ONES!

I don’t think changing your mind this late in the game about such a big element is a good idea. You said several times that an outdoor ceremony is all you’ve thought about from day one. There’s your answer. And in case of really bad weather you have the fabulous back-up!

Don’t second guess yourself!

Holy buckets! Tough decision! I’ll give my opinion, but it’s YOUR wedding, so do what makes you happy. Both spaces are incredible. Equally gorgeous. But you’ve been dreaming of an outdoor ceremony FORRRREEEEVVVEEERRRRR (”Sandlot”, anyone?). Looking back on your wedding day years from now, are you going to wish you’d stuck with your dream? It’s a win-win situation, though! So you really can’t go wrong, sister!

Outdoors! It’s absolutely beautiful, and will be stunning. And if, heaven forbid, bad weather forces your wedding to the Tannery, well then, it was meant to be.

That’s hard, I really like both, but I would totally do the Tannery building!

I would think that outdoors is a lot more ‘you’ since you’re such an avid runner and into outdoorsy things.
