The Dress Sketch Pt. 1

April 1st, 2010 @ 2:47 pm by Mrs. Oyster

I initially had several inspiration pictures to show the seamstress. I had an idea in my head how these would be combined, but hadn’t fleshed it out yet. Stylistically, my favorite designers are Priscilla of Boston/Melissa Sweet, Suzanne Neville, and Lea Ann Belter. No matter what direction my search went, I kept being drawn to their dresses over and over again.

Once I studied dress shapes & took a serious look at my body type, I began to go towards dresses I knew could look good on me. Initially, I took my favorite dresses from those designers, some bridal-magazine fashion advice, added my intended neckline, and created this sketch. Ultimately, I decided to go with something else, but this was the first full sketch I made, and I was pretty proud of it.

Are you ready for the unveiling? Here it is…

I initially posted this dress to my personal blog last summer. In January, I was flipping through a random bridal magazine* when I saw yet another spread of “How to cover up your plus-sized figure” (I plan to show mine off, thank you very much) featuring a dress that looked strikingly familiar. Then I remembered where I saw it. It’s my dress!

I went online, and the dress from the magazine is Mori Lee’s 3056 from their plus size Julietta line. But check out these photos. Notice anything?

Right.

My sketches were scanned and posted to my blog in August 2009, and the earliest info I found on this dress is from October.

The resemblance is, in my opinion, uncanny (the same pose, even!)… but you be the judge.

Knowing bridal fashion, it’s totally possible that many people have the same ideas at once. Who knows? But still, it was a *weird* feeling. Oh well. At least I know the dress that didn’t work for me can work for hundreds of other lucky brides!

Is anyone out there wearing this Oyster Mori Lee dress? Do you have pictures of yourself in it?

Oh wow! That’s kinda a shock to see a design you drew up in a magazine… I hope it is just like minds thinking a like and no one stole your idea. =) Awesome sketches btw!

Just looked at your photo details and realized that it’s not just a similar design… it’s exactly the same! If any of my plus size friends end up checking out that dress, I’ll tell them who truly designed it. ;)

hahaha! That is an amazing coincidence! It is beautiful, but since it didn’t work out, I am sure the one you finally landed on will be epicly (yes, it’s a word) better!

wow, so you think the Mori Lee people found your blog and then copied your dress?! That’s pretty lame… but at least now you can just get that dress if you don’t want to deal with making it yourself!

That was actually “MY” dress, until I tried it on and decided that no, no it wasn’t. But, they did have it available in a non-plus size last January (when I first saw it), so I don’t *think* they stole you awesome design sensibilities :-)

great dress! But it takes a long time to create a dress for a company, so no way they saw yours and then created it by October. But still, clearly you have an eye for design! Hope we get an update on what you’ve chosen…
