Mrs. Dolphin's Picture
Mrs. Dolphin, Gainesville, FL Age and Occupation: 24, Graduate Architecture Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Interactive Interface Developer Engagement Date: February 14, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Plantation Bay Country Club About Me: I’m currently a Graduate Student at the University of Florida studying Architecture. I enjoy playing Scrabble with my Fiance, rooting for the Florida Gators, making any drink that involves a blender, cleaning (yes... I’m crazy), design... GOOD design that is, the new Pepsi with natural sugar, taking pictures, discovering new places in the U.S., and obsessing over doing (and designing) everything myself for our upcoming wedding!
About Mrs. Dolphin

Before I arrive at the moment when I tell you about how I found the dress, I feel a little back story on my search for ’the one’ is important. As some of you know, Mr. Dolphin and I had been engaged for 1 1/2 years before I bought my dress. Throughout our long engagement, I scoured the Internet and bridal magazines for wedding dresses, telling myself I was not allowed to try on any dresses until we hit the 1-year mark (’til our wedding). I kept that promise to myself and went shopping the exact weekend of our 1 year countdown; and, just like that, I found the dress of my dreams—the dress that made my heart swoon! :)

Here was the criteria when looking for the dress of my little Dolphin dreams:

  • Sweetheart Neckline
  • Flowy
  • Romantic
  • Soft

And Mr. Dolphin’s Criterion? That he could feel my butt through the dress. No poof-y dresses. What can I say, Mr. Dolphin is a booty man!

The very first store I visited was the infamous (and sometimes scary) David’s Bridal. I have mixed emotions about David’s Bridal (the warehouse of all things fluffy and frilly). But I was on a mission to give the ol’ bird a chance. While there I tired on the two dresses below (I apologize for no pictures, my camera battery died that day). Bad Miss Dolphin!

Adventures in Wedding Dress Shopping Part One: Narrowing Down the Competition : wedding gainesville wedding dress Davids Davids Bridal

Galina Signature ST9637 at $800 and Oleg Classini CRL277 at $1050

Both dresses were a no-go. The experience was also less than desirable. I was basically stuffed into a tiny dressing room, with no help from a consultant to help me change in and out of these dresses (which is not a one person job). I also was a little underwhelmed by the quality of the dresses. I expected a lot more for the price they were charging. So, it was on to the next stop.

Next I went to The Bridal Shoppes at the Avenues (in Jacksonville, FL). After making the appointment I went online and came across several negative reviews about the store… I still decided to go and see for myself. They had a very wide selection of beautiful dresses (Watters, Mon Cheri, Casablanca etc.) and my consultant there was extremely helpful. Plus they were willing to negotiate on price, which is very rare in the wedding dress industry. Cameras were not allowed, so, below I have pictures of my top two choices.

Adventures in Wedding Dress Shopping Part One: Narrowing Down the Competition : wedding gainesville wedding dress Shoppes Shoppes at Avenues copy

Watters Geneva at $1498 and Allure 8624 at $698

So, from this point I knew I wanted something with lace and a little more form fitting then before (have to show off the figure!). The dresses were absolutely beautiful and meticulously crafted… just gorgeous… but still, no sweetheart neckline.

The third store I visited was Love: a Bridal Boutique in Jacksonville Beach, FL. The store was beautiful and they allowed you to take pictures (score!). Plus if you buy your gown the day of your consultation they will take 12% off. What a good deal! They have Pronovias, Nicole Miller, Essence of Australia, and other brands. Here are some of the dresses. I only have a price for the dress which was my number 1 choice from this store. Check it out below:

Essence of Australia D940

Adventures in Wedding Dress Shopping Part One: Narrowing Down the Competition : wedding gainesville wedding dress Unknown unknown love bridal boutique

unknown designer (I know… I’m a terrible bride for not knowing the designer!)

Adventures in Wedding Dress Shopping Part One: Narrowing Down the Competition : wedding gainesville wedding dress Essence01 essence the one

Essence of Australia D959 at $1150

The last dress was the best I had encountered so far (as you can see from the big grin on this Dolphin Bride’s face). It was light, airy, soft, romantic… it just felt so right. Now here’s the problem with it: the whole time I had the dress on, I felt as though it would be more suitable for a church/chapel wedding and not for the outdoor garden-themed wedding Mr. Dolphin and I are having. It was just too elegant… which is a weird thing to say… I mean how can you ever be too elegant?

Needless to say I felt I needed to search further for ’the dress’, which at the time, was haunting my little Dolphin Bride dreams…

Stay tuned for Part Two: Solutions Bridal to the Rescue!

Did you come across any dresses that you absolutely loved, but just didn’t suit the type of wedding you were/are having?

I love my dress. I love it so much. However, it’s A LOT fancier and friller than I ever thought I’d love. I am getting married on the beach and just assumed I’d have something simple. Til I put this on. Sigh. I had to get it. :)

I encountered the same problem…fell in love with one dress but it was way too heavy for a destination wedding so I kept looking and eventually found another THE dress lol.

I love all the dresses on you!

So smart of you to wait until the year mark to start shopping! As I mentioned in my post about it, I didn’t wait and bought the wrong dress. It was more of a ballroom dress and we are having an outdoor winery wedding. So I totally know what you mean!

I bought a dress a week after I got engaged because my mom was going to be in town and it was really important for her to be here for that with me - well, I picked a dress that SHE loved and for the next 2 months doubted if that was THE dress. I ended up returning it and getting one that the second I put it on it was THE one - I was soo in love with it. It was simple, beautiful, romantic and I knew my FI would LOVE it. Now, I got it at David’s Bridal and that place is a NIGHTMARE. I would never ever ever recommend that place to anyone, but when it comes down to it - I found the dress I’m in love with and at the end of the day thats all that matters. My dress is currently at DB getting alterations done and I had a sweetheart neckline added but I’m nervous about how its going to look because of the beading - I guess if I don’t like it they can take the stitching out (I made sure they could do that lol) those dresses are beautiful! Can’t wait to see what your final choice was!

Why not? I actually think the lightness of that last dress is VERY suited for an outdoors type wedding!

I love my dress and it’s semi-formal but I’m still going to wear it in the park we are getting married at and to our park setting reception.
(http://tinyurl.com/yaguas8) On the david’s bridal website, my dress is shown with trees around the model which doesn’t look bad. It’s your day so go with what you like! =) I bought my dress around a year ago when we thought we might have been doing a beach wedding and it totally wouldn’t have fit that setting but I didnt’ care. ;)

I tried on a sleek hand-painted satin mermaid dress, the opposite of what I thought I wanted and it looked amazing on me. But I said exactly the same thing as you - that it was “too elegant!” It does sounds stupid to say. But my vision was of something more fun, flowy, and modern. Sometimes your vision is (slightly) more important than how the dress looks on you.
That said, I actually think that last dress looks great on you and is soft and romantic - it totally could have worked for a garden wedding.

I’m a mermaid gown die-hard, but just for fun I tried on an empire waist dress with a heavily beaded bodice and accordion pleats - strikingly gorgeous, and very “against type” for me, but exactly as you said - too elegant for an outdoor wedding! The dress begged for diamonds, blood red roses, chandeliers and candlelight…back on the hanger it went!

@RunMegRun: I love Solutions Bridal, they have been nothing short of amazing and I’ve met some pretty awesome people through the store!

@Miss Jellyfish: My biggest fear was purchasing my dress too early! I waited till we had a venue, so I knew exactly what type of wedding we would be having. I look at other dresses all the time and think “oh I would have loved this dress if we were getting married ________”

I liked a lot of those dresses as well! I liked a lot of the Essence of Aus dresses (but you can’t find them around here) and Allure bridals. I ended up getting a dress similar to your first DB dress pictured (but mine has straps). I had a great DB experience tho, but I know that’s something rare.

I really loved a big giant ballgown, but for our outdoor, September wedding it would have been a bit much. I told hubby we need to have a vow renewal in 10 or 20 years so I can wear the big ballgown then :)

Aww, when I was home in December/January for winter break I went dress shopping with my mom just so she would have the experience at the Bridal Shoppe at the Avenues! For Jacksonvile, the selection was good and the ladies were very nice. I didn’t like how they were so secretive about the designer of the dress (although I could tell who I was trying on) and all the tags were ripped out. I wonder if that is against the law in FL, as it is in some other states.

So did someone have to give you a quick booty squeeze to see if the dresses met up to Mr. Dolphin’s standards? ;-)

I wanted the D959 so badly! But there weren’t many retailers that had it in my local NYC area .. so I didn’t even bother to look, or try it on. I have since ordered my dress, and am very happy with it - but seeing you with it on, makes me wonder if I should’ve atleast tried it on! It is beautiful .. AND I don’t think ANY bride could be ‘too’ elegant for their once in a lifetime wedding, regardless of where they wed! =]

I tried on Oleg Classini CRL277 too and almost bought it. It was between that one and the one I actually bought. I love that last dress on you and was waiting to see the words, and I bought it, but it didn’t. haha! Can’t wait to see YOUR dress though!
