About Mrs. Starfish

Delivery Time!

April 2nd, 2010 @ 8:45 am by Mrs. Starfish

Has anyone else used Costco.com for flowers? They are pretty awesome. I had considered a couple other sites to order flowers for Sister Starfish’s shower, but ultimately felt comfortable using Costco since I’ve used them for all my other bulk purchasing needs in life (anyone else Scrapbook? If you use lots of glue sticks, Costco’s bulk packs are amazing!). I have also purchased flowers in the Costco stores before and I’ve always been happy with the purchases. The only drawback is that you have to be a member.

The flowers came in and they were not quite what I expected them to be.  Starfish Mom and Mr. Starfish were both home the day they arrived.

Here’s Starfish dog, aka Sky, guarding the flowers.

And here is how the flowers arrived. I bet you weren’t expecting this box when I said we were getting a 100 flower delivery; I wasn’t either. Apparently Mr. Starfish and Starfish Mom weren’t either, because they took a ton of photos so I would be able to see it and share it all with you.

The quality was good. They recommend having the flowers delivered two days before the event, to allow the flowers time to open up. So, a Friday delivery was perfect timing.

Here they are after lots of unwrapping and trimming. If you order flowers in bulk, Starfish Mom recommends having scissors and plenty of buckets filled with water ready. We also picked up 10 Hydrangea bunches from the Boston Flower Exchange.

One of our last DIYs for Sister Starfish’s shower was the floral arrangements. Starfish Mom lovessssss flowers and tries to incorporate them into all of our events. She even wanted to look into floral designers for the shower, but then reality set in, and we realized that it was way out of the budget. So we decided to go the DIY route. We went to a few places for the supplies including Costco.com, The Flower Exchange in Boston, A.C. Moore, Michaels and PaperSource. Plus, we had a couple of supplies at home including 4 extra vases, and scissors.

Here is the cost breakdown:

  • Costco.com: White Roses - about $106.00 with shipping and taxes
  • The Flower Exchange in Boston: White Hydrangeas for $28.00
  • Michaels: 7 vases @ 2.99 each and thick white ribbon at $6.99 (before the 20% off total purchase coupon) = $22.34 (after 20% off)
  • A.C. Moore: Foam for $4.19 (at 40% off), 7 packs colored pearl beads at $2.99 each - $20.93, 2 packs of white pearl beads at $1.99 a pack -$3.98, wire at $1.99, White floral arrangement sticks 2 packs at $1.99 each -$3.98,
  • PaperSource: Adhesive Pearls 2 packs @ $2.99 each= $5.98

The grand total came out to be $197.39 for 7 centerpieces, 3 accent pieces, and 1 arrangement for Starfish Mom, or about $17.95 per arrangement with a good amount of leftover supplies.

I love how they turned out. We saved money, but we also had to be more creative and ended up with exactly what we wanted!

Here’s a sneak peek at one of the arrangements:

Have you ever arranged DIY flower centerpieces? Were you happy with the results?

I’ve thought about it and have heard many great things about it! Including Sam’s Club & BJs Wholesale as well. I was able to find cheaper flowers at our local wholesale flower market. =)

How did you get to use the Boston Flower Exchange without being a vendor?? I would LOVE to go there but wasn’t sure I could?

P.S. The flowers look SO COOL!

Those arrangements look so beautiful! I have to look into whether Costco provides the same flower service in Canada.

I used 50flowers.com for our wedding (for out-of-season ranunculus, dahlias, and garden roses). They were packaged similarly and the quality was great. I wish our garden roses had opened up a bit more before the big day but they pretty much tell you they can’t guarantee that. We bought other flowers (kermit mums, extra roses, hypericum berries, etc.) from Kroger. Also excellent quality.

Bloomsbythebox is also an awesome source for wholesale flowers. I ordered a bunch of different kinds to sample, and they turned out great! Also, if you live in the NE US, they can usually get them to you in 1 day.

You can check out a blog they have as well for advice and DIY tips: http://blog.bloomsbythebox.com/.

I’m going with Costco for our wedding flowers - their prices are amazing! Our centerpieces will be very simple, classic white calla lilies in tall glass vases, so there is really no need to spend the extra $$ for a professional florist. I haven’t ordered flowers from Costco.com before, so I’m thankful for all the pictures in your post!

just wondering how you bought flowers at the Boston Flower Exchange. I wanted to as well but their website says they don’t sell to the public. Has it changed?

So if you ordered them 2 days in advance, when did you arrange them? Day of or day before?

Miss Starfish, I really hope you’ll do a tutorial on your arrangements or point us to some good resources if you have them! We’re considering DIYing most of our centerpieces and I’d love to learn about what you did.

Hmm so why were they not what you expected? (Just confused since they seemed to turn out nicely)

I would also love to know how you were able to purchase from the Boston Flower Exchange. We are doing the flowers for our wedding in September, but have not found a source and would love to go wholesale!

We didn’t actually go to the Boston Flower Exchange, Starfish Mom’s office building has a florist who went and bought them for us tehre at cost, sorry, I think the only way you can get in is if you are a florist or have a connection.

@mrspaetz: They weren’t what I expected because I didn’t expect them to come in one small box, I was expecting a huge package. Afterwards it made snese, but not what I had envisioned.

Yes!!!! Costco is the best kept secret for flowers! We did a combo of flowers from Costco, fiftyflowers.com, and a florist and the costco ones were by far the prettiest, most vibrant, and the cheapest. You can also order flowers from your local store. I ordered tons of hot pink roses and white spider mums direct from the flower guy at our store and they were only $17 for two dozen roses and $7-8 for the bunches of mums. Amazing!
