Mrs. Oyster, Dallas Age and Occupation: 30, Music Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 46, Art Teacher Engagement Date: January 9, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: The Tower Club About Me: I'm a Texa-Californian with a penchant for sparkly things and a tendency to think a lot. I've been known to sing random songs or dance when there is no music on. My fiance and I love world culture, we love to travel, and we have an incredibly eclectic taste in music. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate our marriage with our family & closest friends. We're planning an “urban black-tie” wedding and hope to incorporate our personalities and some of our own interests. We look forward to a life of love, laughter, good music, beautiful art, and to creating our home together with our four (!) cats.
About Mrs. Oyster

Hey, Mr. D.J.

April 2nd, 2010 @ 10:38 am by Mrs. Oyster

Since a few of our major vendors are already booked, I thought I’d post something about the selection process. Anybody else remember this song?

“On & on, and on and on…”

I thought (for about 5 minutes) about having an iPod reception (especially since I was initially in “garden wedding” mode), but I gave up on that idea quickly. There are just too many variables, and asking a friend to DJ our wedding instead of being an actual guest seemed kind of sad, and we didn’t have anyone we thought would volunteer.

That said, I think an iPod wedding can work very well if you’re creative & have the resources (sound system, a consistently working laptop, etc.). Because we are into international music and mixed genres, I didn’t even consider a live band, although I do plan to have live music for the ceremony & cocktail hour.

So I knew I wanted a DJ. I know that Mr. Oyster and I are *major* music fiends, and we needed someone with the expertise and interests to be able to play several different genres and get the crowd to relate to them all. I also wanted someone who could keep the party moving. Our party would be a bit of a challenge; we’ll have people from different cultures and of all ages, from 6-year olds up to people in their 80s, and we want them all to have a great time.

Other than that, I had no idea where to start with this; no idea about price points or anything except what theknot.com calculator said a DJ should cost. I started emailing at random. I started by looking at the vendors in the one place I’m familiar: other photographers’ blogs. Seriously! I already subscribe to a million photography blogs, several of them local, and it’s a great resource. If the people were having a great time in the photos, I paid extra special attention to who the DJ was. This one’s not local, but it’s one of my absolute favorite wedding dance shots; doesn’t the bride look positively rhapsodic?

I sent out brief emails saying we were looking for a DJ with experience with multicultural crowds and an interest in different genres of music.

One person wrote back and said I was “weird”. (Where do these people come from?) Another didn’t respond.

Then, I found one more DJ on WeddingWire. He just had a nice look about him, and his website was pretty good. I emailed him and not only could he accommodate us, but he seemed excited about it! On speaking to him, he was just as congenial and knowledgeable as his emails suggested. I liked him so much that I figured his price was high — and it was. A quick search, however, revealed that what I thought was “high” was “average for this area”.

It was four months before I called him back to book him for our wedding. In the meantime, I discovered that he was DJ for a wedding of one of my coworkers, who had a beautiful wedding about a year ago. I felt comfortable with him, and it was a no-brainer.

We’ll see how it goes, but I have a pretty good feeling about it. We’ve already met to discuss song lists and genres, and he’s as excited to work with us as we are with him. Let the music play! (Oh… there goes another song in my head.)

What was your strategy for picking a DJ?

H. Dizzle and I are having an iPod wedding :) We’re still figuring out all the logistics, but we’re excited! I’ve got a playlist of about 10 hours worth of music! We plan on partying into the WEEEEE hours of the morn!

Our DJ was the first thing we booked! We didn’t really have a strategy, we just saw his videos and said “want that” and booked :)

I agree with you, I would love to do the ipod wedding, but it’s just not logical for us and I think it would cause me too much stress. We are hoping to be able to pick a live band that can still accommodate all of our tastes, and I guess we can fill in with ipod in between with songs they don’t cover.

I followed with WeddingWire too. The reviews ended up saving us some time and gave us quite a few reference points. And boo to the people who called you weird!

We went with a DJ and I hope to get everyone on the dance floor at some point in the night.

Wow! I haven’t heard that song in forever! But I totally remember it from freshman year of HS. (god that makes me feel old)

That’s horrible that someone would call your idea weird! I’m glad you found someone that sounds awesome. We are going to have a ipod wedding for the opposite reason. We are both such music nuts that not having total control of the playlist would totally freak us out.

…everybody, move your body… now do it! here is something thats going to make you move and groove…

girrrrl, our age is showing ;P We’re doing IPOD for our cocktail/dinner time and then a live band after that. We haven’t started to look for a DJ for our hometown reception yet and I am not looking forward to that. Mr P and I have very eclectic tastes. I am sure I’ll get a few “Your weird” emails too.

Glad you found someone who is as excited as you are! That was my favorite thing about our DJ - he would randomly email me when he thought of a song he thought would fill well into the genres and bands that we liked :)

I have no problems with an iPod wedding, especially these days. How much was this one? An inexpensive wedding DJ?

I’m a music fiend with a multicultural wedding facing me too!! Been closely following all your posts as another bride of colour. :)

I just took the leap of faith handing off this DJ job to my FI - he’s booked a guy who was rocking a club so hard last year he took his card for future reference! Hopes are high.. :) *fingers crossed*
