Martha and Pearls

April 2nd, 2010 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Starfish

We were inspired by this bouquet from Martha Stewart and the Today show throw a Wedding’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed wedding. After seeing this, we knew we had to add the pearl embellishments. So after throwing around some ideas, we came up with roses for being classic, hydrangeas just because we love them, pearl embellishments, and white ribbon like the ones they use to wrap the little blue boxes at Tiffany’s.

I fell in love with the pearl detailing right away. It just adds a little extra and tied in with the theme perfectly. I set out to make bead accents for the centerpieces and had no idea how long it would take!

We needed about 8-10 per arrangement. I had planned to have enough for all 7 arrangements, but ended up only using them for 4, since they didn’t look as good with the hydrangea centerpieces. So that meant we had a lot of extra pearl embellishments left over, but I’m sure I’ll find another use for them!

To make the pearl embellishments, you will need the following supplies:

  • Pearl beads
  • Wire
  • Scissors
  • Floral Sticks

I started by stringing the pearls onto the wire. Once enough beads were on, I cut the wire to the length I wanted. Then I bent the wire with the pearls already on it into the shape I wanted. I went for an oval shape. Then I twisted the end of the wire around the stick to hold the loop in place. I was pretty terrible with photos on this one. But if you have any questions, ask away!

Starfish Mom took care of the flowers. She is quite an amazing florist for someone who has never taken a class. At the shower, guests asked where the flowers were from and everyone was amazed to hear she had done them herself. Not only did she do the arrangements, but she also decorated the vases. It was a pretty simple project, but they looked beautiful!

To start off, she used the following supplies:

  • Wases
  • A hot glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Adhesive pearls

Make sure it fits around the vase!

Then she glued the ribbon directly on to the vase using the hot glue gun, on just one end.

Then she pressed the ribbon down over the hot glue.

She added glue to top of the edge of the ribbon end already glued down.

Then she folded over the edge of the other end of the ribbon and pressed down onto the hot glue strip.

Once complete, she added adhesive pearls.

Starfish Mom tried a couple different designs. I love the little pearls in the middle. A couple people made comments that it looks like the buttons on the back of a wedding dress.

I’m very fortunate being that one of my grandmothers use to be a florist and she is going to do my wedding for free!!! All I have to pay for are the flowers. Yay for talented family members!

Would also love to know how you were able to purchase from the Boston Flower Exchange! I’m in Boston and we are doing our own flowers (yikes!) and would love to purchase wholesale.

Beautiful glimpse of your arrangement!
