Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.
About Mrs. Veggie

Oh Shenanigans!

April 2nd, 2010 @ 11:04 am by Mrs. Veggie

Music. The easiest decision of our wedding. Actually, it’s something we decided on before we were even engaged. Contra dance!

Those of you who haven’t spent much time in New England might not be too familiar with this form of dance. Picture square dancing in long lines where you switch partners all the time and every man you dance with tries to prove how macho he is by spinning you faster and faster. It’s so fun.

Mr. Veggie and I aren’t really huge contra dancers. It’s kind of a subculture unto itself that we haven’t fully been inducted into. And needless to say that neither of our families (mine being from New Jersey and his being from Detroit) have much experience at barn dances, either. So why have a contra dance at our wedding?

Well, we like it. And we think its fun. And we think our family and friends will have fun, too. Oh, and one of our first dates was to a friend’s barn dance. That night, in the middle of one of the songs the caller worked into his ramblings: “Swing that girl with the long red hair” and later that night Mr. Veggie told me I was the belle of the ball. It was the first time realized that I was actually falling in love with this crazy Veggie farmer living off-the-grid. Sigh.

I researched bands that play in eastern Pennsylvania in hopes of finding a band that wouldn’t have to travel too far to get to our venue. Eventually I found one from Ithaca, New York. A bit far from the carbon-footprint viewpoint at 2.5 hours away, but still relatively close in the scheme of things, and they’re going to carpool. A few emails later, a bit of price negotiating, and we have a band! They are called the O’Shanigans (not the Oh Shenanigans, Mr. Veggie). Aren’t they rad?

They’ve also offered to let us use their sound equipment for the rest of the night, in exchange for accommodations at the camp. That sounds good to us!

What I haven’t figured out yet exactly is the timing of the evening. The band will play for 2 1/2 hours. So, I suppose they will start well after dinner so that people have time to digest before spinning their dinner all over the floor. So, what do we do during dinner? When do we do our first dance? Where will speeches fall? How long after dinner should we wait for the band to play? Hmm… there is lots to think about still.

Have you ever been to a contra dance?

That sounds AWESOME!!! I’ve only been to a contra dance a couple of times in Cooperstown, NY but have been trying to get FI into the idea. I’ll definitely have to look for the O’Shanigans, since we are Ithacanians and they sound fantastic!

I’d say give 45 mins to an hour between dinner and dancing. That’s plenty of time for toasts and the first dance and a little mingling before the dancing gets underway.

haha, I didn’t actually think about the whens and hows of the reception music until dinner the day-of! :)
Our band just asked if we wanted them to play some background music during the last 1/2 hr of dinner - I was fine with that ;). We had a bit of an organic timeline for our reception…

I’ve never heard of Contra dancing, but man that sounds fun!! I’d play background music during dinner, then toasts and first dances… then the band.

That sounds like a great time! Although I’d agree that waiting a little (30mins?) between eating and spinning is probably a good idea!

that sounds like so much fun! i went to college in NH and then lived in VT for a long time, and we definitely had fun contra-dancing - we even had a dance as part of our college orientation! i have to admit i love structured activities like that, i feel like they really break down barriers - someone else telling you what to do and everyone is laughing, it really does not matter if you know what you are doing! it will be awesome!

We aren’t doing dancing at our wedding (not a great fit for the venue and FH is much of a dancer), but if we did it would totally be contra dancing.

I really want to do a contra dance at our wedding too!!! We’re having it at a pioneer village so I didn’t think a DJ would suit the venue…plus my family doesn’t really dance to a DJ but I think they all would participate in a contra dance! I’m just trying to figure out how long people would be interested in dancing… I don’t want the reception to end too early. When I went contra dancing it lasted for 3 hours which seems good to me, but will guests want to contra dance for 3 hours (with cake cutting and toss in between)? How did your contra dance wedding go? How long were people interested in dancing?
