Mrs. Turtle's Picture
Mrs. Turtle, Central California Age and Occupation: 21, Art Student/Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, English Student Engagement Date: August 16, 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Mr. Turtle's Grandparents' backyard, Arroyo Grande, CA About Me: I am a California girl who loves the beach and the mountains, but is quite satisfied living right in the middle where I can enjoy the best of both worlds. I am happiest when traveling to faraway places, wandering through museums, watching old movies, or baking up a storm. Mr. Turtle and I are high school sweethearts and fellow book nerds who both drive Mini Coopers and are most likely to be found browsing in antique stores. We're having so much fun planning our European garden wedding with a vintage twist and can't wait to share more of life's adventures together!
About Mrs. Turtle

A trend I’ve noticed growing in wedding photography over the past year and a half is the use of props. I really like this movement because it reminds me of fashion photography, which I’m pretty obsessed with. I’ve been trying to decide if there’s a prop or two that would be fun to use in our engagement photos. I really like the whimsy that props can add to photo shoots, yet they can also be too trendy for my taste. For our engagement pictures, I was tempted to just keep it simple, but here are a few of the props that really stuck out to me!

Books:

If I had to choose a prop that really fits us as a couple and would feel natural, I would definitely have to choose books. In school, Mr. Turtle is an English Literature major, and I’m an English Literature minor. We met in high school freshman English class, and Mr. Turtle plans on becoming an English professor. Between the two of us, we have a pretty cool collection of books! For example, check out Mr. Turtle’s bookcase at home:

Doesn’t it look straight out of a library in an old movie? It reminds me of Professor Higgins’ from My Fair Lady! This is just a small section of it, and he’s not even a professor yet! I was thinking it would be fun to pick out just a few of our favorite books and play around with something along these lines:

Balloons:

A little overdone in the wedding world? Maybe. But not in the eyes of people who don’t look at wedding blogs every day, like most of our family and friends. I think they’re cute! The photos where people are holding a balloon and look like they’re floating in the air remind me of Winnie the Pooh.

Furniture:

I also really like the pictures that use indoor furniture as props in random places like the middle of an open field.

Mr. Turtle and I have two chairs that we think would look good in our pictures! The first is this yellow one we bought at an antique store:

The second, you might recognize from the post about “the wedding shoes that almost were.” We found in Mr. Turtle’s grandparents’ storage unit looking like this:

We had fun restoring this French chair to better fit with our style. We painted it white in my backyard, and I completed the molding with clay.

Our MINIs:

A fun fact about the Turtles is that we are both proud owners of MINI Coopers! Mine is cream with a black top and Mr. Turtle’s is blue with a white top. We thought it would be really cute if they made an appearance in our photos!

Anyway, we felt like we had plenty of options to choose from! In my next post, you’ll see which we ended up using! Did any of you use props in your engagement pictures? If so, what were they?

We didn’t use any props. But we used some cool backdrops - a frozen waterfall, a cherry and spoon statue, and a wall of stars and famous people. http://tedzeppelynn.blogspot.com/2010/01/engagement-photos.html

I love the balloon photos you posted above!

I saw a new mini dealership the other day that had a mini anchored to the side of the building (as if it were driving down). Very cool, would probably make an awesome engagement shot too :) Its in Seattle though, nowhere near you!

Ah, no props other than our favorite local landmarks. The furniture-in-the-outdoors idea is a good one.

@amariem25: I love your pictures! I think unique, meaningful locations are even better than props! I love that you took them in the snow. The waterfall one are my favorites!

I think the yellow chair would be awesome in a photo shoot. I can’t wait to see your photos.
We didn’t really use any props, but there was snow on the ground and our photographer got a cute shot of my fiance throwing a snowball!

Great job restoring that chair! I think it’ll look uber chic in your pictures. And matching mini-coopers? Adorable! Can’t wait to see the outcome.
