Registering: The Practical

April 3rd, 2010 @ 1:30 pm by Mrs. Starfish

When we set up our second registry we wanted to go somewhere practical. After researching different options, we decided on Bed, Bath and Beyond. We realized they have the same items as many of their competitors, but at much cheaper prices!

For example, when we were considering china, I fell in love with Lenox’s Opal Innocence. At Macy’s it is typically $172.00 per place setting, but often goes on sale for $119.99. At Bed Bath and Beyond it is always $119.99 and they always have 20% off coupons, so if guests are coupon savvy, they can get the place setting at $95.99!

After learning the price differences, we were completely on board with BB&B.

It doesn’t hurt that they have an incredible amount of items to choose from. They have so much in fact, that we had to visit a couple of stores to see different items. Not every store has the same inventory. This has been the only down side to registering at BB&B, but since we have multiple registries, I doubt it will be an issue.

So what does our china/dinnerware look like? Well even though I absolutely love the Opal Innocence china, we decided it isn’t very practical for our lifestyle. We plan to continue holidays at Mr. Starfish’s aunt’s house (if you pronounce it ant do you spell it ant or aunt? I say aunt, and Mr. Starfish calls his aunt, ant), or at Sister Starfish’s house, Starfish Dad’s, Starfish Mom’s or FPIL Starfish’s house. We tend to visit a minimum of three houses on the holidays. So needless to say, we won’t be needing it for many occasions.

Instead of a fancy china, we went for a more practical version, Wedgwood White. Mr. Starfish loves the simplicity and I love that I can dress it up or down based on the occasion.

So with practical china picked out, we were able to continue registering for some favorites like the KitchenAid mixer (did you know this is included for the 20% off coupon?), Calphalon Contemporary Stainless Steel non-stick cookware, a Henckles knife set, Pyrex measuring cups and Calphalon bakeware.

We are such a practical couple that BB&B was the perfect registry choice with all of their well known quality brands at great prices. This was by far the easiest place to register and our favorite. We especially love going online, so we can see it all in one place.

Here are a few of the other perks to registering at BB&B:

  • Incentive program- ability to receive free gifts when registering for specific items, that are purchased off of your registry
  • Gift tracker- which helps with thank you notes
  • Completion program- get a discount on items that were unfulfilled on your registry with a one time coupon to use once in store and once online up to three months after the event
  • Free announcement cards
  • Complimentary gift packaging in store for guests
  • Hassle Free Returns
  • Refer a friend program- I was referred to BB&B by Sister Newport, so they gave her a $25.00 referral card good towards any purchase over $50.00. If you plan to register here, see if any of your friends were recently married and used them and make sure to tell the consultant when you set up your registry!

Did you have a favorite registry location? What made them stand out?

This post is really helpful to me! I’ve always kind of been against Linens and Things and places like that because I am a label whore. However, I am also a freak for saving money and coupons! I love the Wedgewood White you selected - I also want a classic white line that can be dressed up or down for any occasion!

opal innocence was the place settings we picked out. Sometimes Macy’s does have a seasonal china sale. At that sale you can get Opal Innocence for around $86. Also, they often had buy 3 placesettings get the 4th for free. My parents did that for us!

At first I was afraid that the store would be too big and guests would feel overwhelmed. Recently, I shopped for a wedding gift there and they print the registry on a different color for you. Because I was carrying that around the staff was SO helpful! It was reassuring that little old ladies would get the help they needed in such a huge store!

In the southwest we say “ant,” but when I go to visit my aunt in NY I have to switch to “aunt.” :)

I will be registering within the next couple of months and BB&B is my #1 choice!! I think my second registry will be at Sears so I can register for some of the bigger ticket items!!!

Love your pretty China choices! Interesting to see why you picked to go with BB&B. I’m from a small town and driving to any national chain is the only choice for members of my community… And locals more often go for the Macy’s choice because it has more locations in our area… all over 45 miles away. But we are used to that as the normal registries…

I completely understand your choices! We’re actually registered at Macy’s and BB&B (plus Crate and Barrel for a few things like our regular dishes), since we found things we liked at each one. Also, Macy’s DOES have many of the same “perks”, including registry completion, an incentive program, and hassle free returns (they just give you a gift card to use). And if you have a Macy’s account, they will connect your registry to that, and you get 5% rewards for any gift bought from your registry (and 10% for any purchase YOU make - doesn’t have to be from your registry). So… there are definitely pros and cons to each place!

I thought you couldn’t use the 20% off coupon if you buy online….BB&B doesn’t have a lot of selection for the china settings in store, which is why I went with Macy’s for China.

Plus Macy’s sends out a lot of coupons. I routinely get a 20% off coupon in the mail.

I registered at both BB&B and Macys and I found the BBB so much more helpful. There were things that I had planned to register for at Macys and then didn’t because the BBB staff was so knowledgeable. Also they were NICE Macy’s was inattentive and off-putting.
Bed Bath and Beyond all the way!!

We are currently registered for china at Macys but I might have to switch just out china to BBB because you’re right, it’s cheaper. But then we would have 4 registries. Is that too many?

We registerd at BB&B about 9 months before the wedding, and subsequently, about 1/2 of our stuff is “out of stock” or totally discontinued. It’s disheartening because we spent SO much time picking it out, and now it’s not available anymore!
My advice, don’t register TOO early!

We thought about registering at BB&B since their locations are more accessible than Crate & Barrel. There’s not even one within 100 miles of my hometown (where my family lives)! Eep!

@Kay0814: We wanted Sears too, unfortunately the only one by us had no clue how to set up a registry, I wish they did. It was Mr. Starfish’s top choice!
@MissCremeBrulee: You can get online coupons, too! Ir depends on the store in your areas, one of the stores near us does not have china in store, but another one does.
@Miss Jellyfish: I don’t think so! Wew are considering adding a fourth, too!
@Ella1978: That happend to us with our Crate registry because a lot of things are seasonal.
