About Mrs. Guinea Pig

A Guinea Pig Shower

April 5th, 2010 @ 7:31 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

A couple of weeks ago, Mr. Guinea Pig’s family threw an absolutely amazing bridal shower for me. Mr. GP’s mom and godmother planned a fantastic afternoon, and his godmother went all-out in decorating her house to make sure it was beautiful! Everything was color coordinated with our blue and yellow scheme, from the amazing floral arrangements:

to the candles, plates, and silk rose petals on the tables:

(cream cheese + smoked salmon + capers is probably one of my favorite food combos ever)

I felt incredibly honored that so many of Mr. Guinea Pig’s family and our friends came to help me celebrate. In addition, my mom flew out from California, AND Mr. Guinea Pig surprised me by flying BM Lauren up from North Carolina, too! I had originally been sort of sad because none of my bridesmaids could make it to the shower, and he knew that Lauren would give anything to be able to attend, so he got her a flight up for the weekend to surprise me! I’m a very lucky lady, that’s for sure :)

(Me and BM Lauren before the shower - gee, do we look happy much?!)

Once we got to the bridal shower at Mr. GP’s godmother’s (gorgeous) house, everyone oohed and ahhed over the amazing decorations, delicious food, and super cute customized chocolate bar favors:

(check out that lunch spread! Deviled eggs, delicious salad, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, 3 different quiches… the list goes on!)

(I wanted to save one of these… but I ate it. Thankfully mom GP had the foresight to hide some from me!)

After folks had gotten settled and ate the appetizers (once they had muscled their way past me, since I pretty much stood directly in front of the smoked salmon for the beginning of the afternoon :) ), Mr. Guinea Pig’s mom welcomed everyone with an incredibly sweet, thoughtful toast that nearly had me in tears.

(I think I was trying to hide behind those cabinets… I hate when everyone’s looking at me!)

After the toast, we sat down to enjoy the tasty food, drink champagne and chat!

Then it was on to presents, and again I have to say - I’m a lucky lady! Friends and family were beyond generous, and unfortunately thanks to my meticulous gift-wrap opening habit, this part took a while. I can’t help it! Everyone took time to do such a beautiful wrapping job, I couldn’t just rip it off!

(with the ribbon bouquet and an awesome rice cooker :) )

Our friend Carrie is an art teacher, so she was put in charge of making the excellent ribbon bouquet. It turned out quite nicely, and now it’s tucked away for the rehearsal!

The final cherry on top was dessert: not only did we have chocolate covered strawberries, but there was also this great photo cake! The picture they used is one of Mr. GP’s and my favorites from Tahoe (where we got engaged) - we put the camera on a picnic bench with the timer set and ran!

(Even the cake was in our colors!)

I loved spending the afternoon with family and friends, eating delicious food, enjoying some champagne and mimosas, and getting excited about the fact that Mr. Guinea Pig and I are getting married very soon! Plus, I got to chat with some of Mr. GP’s family, whom I’d never gotten a chance to meet before.

(my awesome family: Mr. GP’s mom and younger twin sisters, me, and Mom Guinea Pig!)

I had honestly never thought I would have a bridal shower, since my family, friends and bridesmaids are spread out around the country - so it meant that much more to me that Mr. Guinea Pig’s family is so excited about us getting married that they offered to host one. My only regret is that we didn’t get a group photo before everyone left!

And, because I know this is what you really wanted to see when you saw the words “A Guinea Pig Shower”, here ya go :D

Did you have one big shower, or several small showers? Anyone else get an unexpected shower?

I have asked that I only have one big shower.. because my parents are divorced, it would mean having 4 separate smaller showers, and like you, I don’t like being the centre of attention, so I figure getting it all over with in one shot is probably best :) Your shower looked gorgeous!!

Oooh I love it!! Congrats on such a beautiful shower!

My fiance has twin younger sisters as well. SO excited about my showers (3 of them in May… with many sets of family in many different locations).

I used to have guniea pigs growing up, and once, they got some weird skin condition and we had to bathe them in a giant pot in the sink. One of them would freak out and the other one would sit under the water like it was his favorite place on earth.
All of this is my way of saying “I like it when you pepper your posts with guinea pigs and please find a picture of a guinea pig wearing a veil.”

Hey, did you go to Davidson??? I graduated in 2006–you look really familiar to me. I recently got engaged. I just bookmarked weddingbee.com and was shocked to see someone I recognized in the first blog post I read! Congratulations, and your shower looks like it was wonderful! I couldn’t figure out how to send you a message so I hope a comment will do :)

I spot an Easter Pooh-bear in the first picture! He’s yellow and blue (and cute!). Haha! (And the arrangement is beautiful too.)

I’m going to have one big shower, too. Might as well enjoy everyone together, right? :-)

I LOVE that everyone came together to support and celebrate with you you! Awesome! And by far my favorite part of all this wedding planning business so far! Not sure how our shower will work since our friends/family/bridal party are spread out around the country & world. I’m crossing my fingers for one like yours though! :)
