About Mrs. Scissors

Addressing Envelopes Gives Me... : wedding georgia stationery Shakes2 shakes2

(You thought I was going to say something gwoss, didn’t you?)

I have this awesome “unexplained tremor” in my right hand. It comes out when I’m nervous, tense, doing fine detail work, or just at the worst possible moments. So basically, all the time. Video for proof…

There’s nothing “wrong” with me… I’ve had tests out the wazoo, I’m not a former alcoholic, I wasn’t a hardcore drug user, I’m just unlucky, and it’s just “unexplained.” No worries, for real… except for in the DIY-wedding-stuff realm.

You see, the sucky thing about this little gem is that it has made it nearly impossible to address more than 10 envelopes in one go. I write, get nervous, my muscles tense up, and I get the shakes. I don’t want our guests to think that all of these painstakingly-written-with-a-dip-pen-and-India-ink envelopes were addressed on a moving train.

In taking on this whole calligraphy junk, I thought my problems would lie in not making a mess, learning how to write the letters, not smearing my hand through ink––the norm. I’ve gotten past all of that, and now it’s just my body putting up a fight. Great.

My process has become:

  1. Insert lined guide into envelope
  2. Write out names
  3. Strategically place the envelope somewhere that the cat cannot reach
  4. Tell said cat to get back into her box
  5. Figure out where pen was put while hiding envelope
  6. Lather, rinse, repeat until hand starts shaking
  7. Take a break by blow-drying each envelope to make sure that the ink is dry
  8. Wait 2 hours for hand to stop shaking
  9. Lather, rinse, repeat

Le sigh.

To be perfectly honest, there’s no real point to this post other than to whine about something that I didn’t foresee as being a problem. I will continue writing, shaking, and being irritated until I’m finished with all hand-written goods.

What unexpected sand traps did you find while going about wedding business? Anybody else have the same nervous-or-whatever-it-is shakes problem? How do you deal with it?

What about anti-anxiety meds? I don’t know if it would help, but maybe? I’m sorry, scissors!

Mr. Turtle gets the same shakes, but with both of his hands! So weird.
P.S. My invitations are arriving next week, and I ordered calligraphy supplies completely because you have inspired me. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out!

I also get the shakes with both hands. No idea what it’s related to, other than maybe that I have bad circulation? I also have Reynaud’s, which means my hands turn blue when they get cold!

I’m starting to get this at my job. My hands shake a lot now, which make it very hard to do my job (pipetting half a microliter amounts sometimes). I am showing the early signs of carpal tunnel too, according to my physical therapist. I believe it is all due to poor ergonomical working conditions. I wish work places would address these problems more.

Have you looked into essential tremors? Fi has this problem, too, from his mom’s side of the family. His is barely noticable so far and comes & goes in much the way you said, but it does usually get more severe with age. His mom’s is noticable when she’s holding a glass. It doesn’t effect health or have any sort of longterm negative connotation. It’s just the shakes.

@lilyfaith - FI has reynauds too! And terrible allergies, a thyroid imbalance, sinus problems…I love my little delicate flower!!

Ugh, how annoying! Does it hurt? I like the saucy mystery music in your video clip, if that’s any consolation.

Yucky shakes! I could only address like 15 envelopes at a time, but that’s only because I was a wuss :) And now I’m singing “You give me shaa-akes… SHAKES! Shaakes when I pen en.ve.lopes.” :) Clearly I need to leave work.

@twalila - LOL! I don’t quite have that list of problems, but the Reynaud’s was scary at first. It came out when I was 18, and it scared the shit out of R and I when my hands just turned BLUE.

You really do get the shakes… =( that sucks!

I get an eye twitch. I had a twitch in my right eye last thursday and friday in lab… then again today. But that’s the whole lot of wedding/PhD stress getting to me.

My eyebrow has also started twitching.

Awesome.

Aww, I’m sorry! But your guests are hopefully going to totally appreciate all your hard work!

I pussed out and just printed clear envelope labels. I couldn’t possibly torture my hand, or our guests with my lame handwriting!

I get the shakes too, and the eye twitches when I am nervous! I cannot do any fine motor painting, even to paint my nails, bc my hands are all over the place. Weird.

I love that even the video of your hand shaking looks like art!

My hand would be freaking out if I calligraphed ours. I can barely write a full page worth of notes without my hand getting all shaky.

I feel like your shakes might be induced by fear of calligraphy! My hand is shaking a little just thinking about it! :)
