DIY: Candy Bag

April 5th, 2010 @ 3:43 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Sister Starfish had big plans for DIY projects, and we had a lot to accomplish during her engagement. So to kick it off, we went with something easy.

Sister Starfish and BIL Starfish got married on “The Sweetest Day”, which is the third Saturday of October. According to Mrs. Pineapple’s post,

It is pretty much Valentine’s Day to celebrate people you just like a lot, in addition to those you love. It is described by Retail Confectioner’s International as an “occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.

So as part of their Sweetest Day wedding celebration, they had a candy bar as the favor for the guests, which oddly enough, they had planned on doing before they even knew their wedding was on the Sweetest Day. It was only when searching Weddingbee for candy bar ideas, that she realized her wedding date fell on the Sweetest Day.

Once Sister Starfish knew that, the candy bar became a little more fun and a little more meaningful.

To celebrate the occasion, Sister Starfish searched Etsy and found a seller, Modern Art Stamps, who makes custom stamps. They worked together to create a custom stamp showcasing the couple’s names, the wedding date, The Sweetest Day, and a little design work.

The stamp was used in a few projects throughout the planning process. To start, we just used them on the candy bar treat bags. Sister Starfish wanted to stamp them, but as I had just started an obsession with embossing, we decided to test it out on the bags. They came out great!

We hit A.C. Moore to pick up copper ink and clear embossing powder. She had already ordered the favor bags and the stamp had just arrived. I brought over my heat embossing tool and we got to work.

We put on Made of Honor with Patrick Dempsey and went on to emboss a lot of bags…

Earlier in the week, I had started my own secret project for Sister Starfish using the heat embosser. After spending four nights of embossing alone, it was soooo nice to emboss with someone else, it makes a huge difference when you are doing it with someone else. I think Sister Starfish was super happy to have help on this one, I know she must have thanked me a million times.

We started a system. She stamped. I poured powder, which she helped with sometimes. Then I embossed with the heat tool. Once in awhile we switched jobs.

In one night we embossed 200 favor bags. Which we both think is a huge accomplishment. Not only am I obsessed with embossing, but Sister Starfish has found a new hobby, too! Luckily we can now do it together! Below is the finished product and if you keep scrolling, you can see how it all looked at the reception.

The candy bar was a huge hit! Such a huge hit that it was almost completely gone by the time I went to take a look! Luckily Michael and Laura, the photographers, were able to capture the candy bar pre-guests.

I wasn’t just sad to miss the candy, although believe me I was, but I was also upset because Sister Starfish and I had DIYed the whole thing. I wanted to see the final outcome that we worked so hard on!

She bought labels and ribbon from Paper-Source for the candy labels. It was a fun last minute touch. I drove Sister Starfish crazy the week before her wedding. She had everything done far in advance, so I kept coming up with ways to keep her busy like candy bar labels, personal Hershey bar wrappers, and lollipop canisters. We spent the weekend before her wedding relaxing and crafting.

The favor bags look amazing! I have yet to try embossing, but with all these embossing projects on the hive recently makes me want to learn to emboss. I’m just afraid I’ll want to emboss EVERYTHING once I know how! haha!

OMG! Thank you for posting this :) because i just realized (after checking my calendar TWICE) that we’re getting married on The Sweetest Day this year too! We were also planning on having a “Sweets Bar” without even knowing that it’ll be on The Sweetest Day! CRAZY! I’m so excited!

Hi Everyone, BostonBride is also sister Starfish :) A few of you asked about the bags. I got them from Papermart.com. I believe they were 6 3/4 x 4 3/4. They didn’t have a tie or wrap which I kept going back and forth on, but honestly most people filled them to the brim anyway and had eaten half before they even left the wedding and then just folded it over. I searched using “kraft bags” and I remember Papermart for being reasonably priced and they were one of the few that had white bags vs brown or colored ones.

awesome! the more i see these candy bars, the more i think “i need that!” but i don’t even like candy! now if it was a cheeseburger bar…YUM.

I think it is the prettiness of the display. Maybe I’ll do a brownie bar…a little bit harder to package maybe….

Can I ask why you call it “THE” Sweetest Day? Is that just what they call it in Boston? Here in Cleveland, we call it just “Sweetest Day.”

@tinab: I’m not sure of the official title, but because it is a wedding, I think “the sweetest day” sounds better since it is the holiday but also the sweetest day because it is the couples wedding day :)
