I Ran With the Brides…

April 5th, 2010 @ 6:43 pm by Mrs. Octopus

… and I lived to tell the tale.

I Ran With the Brides... : wedding pittsburgh wedding dress Rotb2

Participating in the Running of the Brides was what you might call “a life experience”. Another way to say it would be “absolutely ridonkulous”.  My running team and I did a lot of prep work in the weeks leading up to the big day—there may or may not have been PowerPoint presentations assembled—so I thought some personal experience might be helpful to any other running brides with dreams of a cheap dress and a healthy sense of bloodlust.

I wasn’t running for myself—I was a foot soldier for one of my best friends, Erica. We are mutual bridesmaids—I’m going to be hers in April, and she’ll be one of mine in September. I had to have her back! The team consisted of Erica, Erica’s mom, MOH Kelly, bridesmaid Lauren, friend Jill, and myself. And guess what? We were one of the crazy groups of people camped out on the sidewalk for an entire night before the event (since 11 PM, to be exact. Ca.Razy.).

Setting up camp, and one last photo before settling down for the night!

Why was this such a big deal? Why did we build ourselves a little compound of sleeping bags and lawn chairs on the asphalt in the middle of the night in the summer in Washington DC?

Because of this:

Sources: here and here.

Do you hear the choir of angels singing? It’s Monique Lhuillier’s Scarlet! Fact: One of my beloved Erica’s defining characteristics is her champagne taste. I am not kidding when I tell you it’s like she has some kind of laser beam in her brain that zeroes in on the most expensive item in any given store. Naturally, this gorgeous dress was The One for her—but sadly, the price tag on that sucker was just not feasible. So we decided to make the run in hopes of finding it, or something like it.

Team LBB poses for one more (terrible) photo. LBB stood for “Low Budget B*tches” because we are klassy. Then, my fabulous bride friend made her sign.

When the doors opened at 8AM, we were among the first groups to make it inside the store; we had the full “sprinting and yanking dresses off the racks like a hungry lion” experience. I was seriously sweating bullets! But, to be honest with you, that wasn’t the most insane part—the bartering, negotiating, and dress-trying-on follow-through was even more intense (for me, at least). The store was absolutely crammed to the gills with women running around with armfuls of wedding dresses, so it was crowded in an epic way. Crazy and fun, but not for the faint of heart!

The run began just a few minutes after this photo was taken!

Here are a few tips I’d recommend. There’s lots of good advice out there already, so check out those suggestions as well!

Bring water and wear layers. Like I said, the store was packed, it was July, and lots of people were either running around or frantically changing in and out of dresses. It got REALLY FLIPPIN’ HOT in there. After awhile, I had stripped down to the skimpy camisole I was wearing under my team t-shirt, which was rather indecent, but better than sweating my face off. You will feel much better if someone manages to cram some fresh water into a fanny pack somewhere.

If you are looking for a specific dress by a specific designer, this may not be the event for you. Sadly, things did not work out for Erica! We scoured every corner of that store, and I am one hundred percent confident that the Scarlet wasn’t there anywhere. Erica very gamely tried on lots of other beautiful dresses, but The One is The One. We left dress-less. (She did eventually find a gorgeous pre-owned Monique online though!)

Be nice to the dresses. A few times I saw girls changing dresses so hurriedly that they put their foot through the tulle/ripped a seam open/tore the lacy overlay (and so on), which destroys a perfectly good dress. Can you imagine finding a dress you love and being so frantic that you wreck it?! No matter how much adrenaline is rushing through your veins, the dresses are not on fire, so remember to take a deep breath and slooowwww down.

Be methodical. Take your time and remember who you’ve talked to, who has dresses your bride might like, and where they are. If you run around like a chicken with its head cut off, you will put yourself into a tizzy and forget everything. Very counterproductive. Not like I’m speaking from direct experience or anything.

Finally, one last piece of information: I saw lots of ball gown silhouettes, and very few mermaid/trumpet/fit-and-flares. I saw lots of beaded and/or ruched styles, but not much lace. I saw a lot of mid-range designers (Pronovias, La Sposa, Melissa Sweet, Amsale, Junko Yoshioka) and absolutely none of the big guns (Vera and Monique).

Who else has survived the Running? Any tips to share?

Ohhh! I wanted to go to one recently, but didn’t b/c I’m not engaged yet. I told my SO about it afterwards and he said “You should have went to get a great dress at a great price.” ARGH!

I’m going to save these tips for the next one!

Wow! I don’t think I could run with the brides… I think all the mayhem and hysteria of it would make it hard for me to find that dress. ;)

I think that looks like a blast - it’s totally one of those things that I’d want to do and everyone else would just tell me I’m crazy :)

I ran with the Brides… but it actually involved zero running. An alternative for walking the event is going later. But this strategy also doesn’t help with finding “the one.” You all looked like you had a blast! What a fun memory to have!

I ran with the Brides in Boston. Actually “walked” is more like it. I also had a vision of a dress that I had to find, even though I already put a deposit down on another dress. I went, and then found (and fell in love with) a dress that was completely different than the one I went looking for! It was more relaxed, and I did see some great labels, including Vera, but it didn’t grab me the way my dress did. It was so worth it, and I would do it again. My friends who were scared to go were absolutely amazed by my calm experience and the gorgeous dress I walked with! The unattached ones are planning on going to ROTB when their time comes!

My cousin and I got our dresses at the RoTB - we got there at 7ish, and were totally fine as far as getting there early enough - no need to be the people that camped out. I did my own write-up here, of some of the nasty, and incredibly nice behavior I saw. http://www.wedding-for-two.com/2009/04/how-not-to-act-at-rotb-event.html For example, my sister found a girl who had similar taste to me in gowns and who was a similar size, and befriended her and asked if she could have her dresses when she was done. After she had given my sister her dresses, the girl came by to see if any of them worked and was so happy that I was buying one of her rejects.
I would say this event is a great one for plus-sized brides who want to try on something that fits, and anybody with a sense of humor (because some of those dresses are ug-ly.)

Great. Now I’ve fallen in love with this Monique Lhuillier gown. It’s quite similar to the Vineyard Nora (for $2500) or the Forever Yours #46277 (around 650$ at the Burlington Bridal mart - classy eh?) or the American Allure C155 which is 1500$. I am LOSING it for this lace keyhole back style. LOSING. IT.

By the way, all ranting aside, looks like you girls had fun! Glad both you and your friend have such great friends to celebrate the wedding fun with!

@MsMamaBear: Don’t worry! They have them all over the place every year! You’ll find something great when you go.
@Ms HW and Grace: To be honest, we totally could have showed up hours later and still been able to try lots of dresses. Part of the camping-and-running was just for the experience of it ;)
@edb: I read your blog post and totally agree with some of the things you saw. I got a little overwhelmed at some points by how aggressive people could get.
@ktbrady: The Monique dress is stunning, all right, but it is VERY expensive. My friend nearly lost her mind trying to find a pre-owned one, because buying it new was like $6k. It’s great that you found similar dresses that won’t take such a chunk out of your budget!

Whoa, major props to you! I went to ROTB at 5pm and it had much calmed down, but I can’t imagine going full force as you had!

I found a similar dress for a (wedding) reasonable price. It has a different collar but also has a keyhole back and all over lace. Its the Justin Alexander #8412.

I almost went to the Running of the Brides in DC last summer, but I had a final that morning. It looks like so much fun, if not just for the crazy experience!

Stories like yours make me wish I had gone dress shopping just for the experience alone! And I’ve told you before, but I LOVE your tips! :)

How fun! I can’t believe you guys camped out in the parking lot! Too cool!

That is my dress! I love it!! For those looking for the scarlet you might be able to find one on for probably half of the usual cost on http://www.oncewed.com. Though I bought mine from a boutique I plan on selling my dress after the wedding.

I got a dress at the Miami ROTB a $8125. Badgley Mishka to be exact. I went not even thinking I would find something but was floored with this gown and didn’t know the designer until I got it home. I was not one of the crazed brides willing to settle for just anything. I was spefically looking for one fo two dresses that were DEF not there. Still, it was a fun experience and i scored BIG time!!!

Kudos to you for having the guts to do this! I gotta be honest though, ROTBs scares the crap out of me, I think I would walk in and immediately proceed to the panic attack phase.

When did you do the ROTB? I’m sure it wasn’t the same one I went to in DC (August 2008), but wouldn’t it be a small world if it was. While I’m sure it’s not for everyone, I loved doing ROTB! It’s quite the experience.
