The Food Post

April 5th, 2010 @ 4:23 pm by Mrs. Hot Dog

MMMM…. I love food. I’m a real meat-and-potatoes kind of girl. I always love a good steak, grilled to perfection. Throw in a glass of iced tea and a loaded baked potato and I am a happy gal. Mr. Hot Dog is the same way, so we knew that we wanted this type of food at our ranch shindig. We were thinking maybe BBQ ribs or brisket and all the fixings. Yum!

Initially, because of our budget, we planned to cook all the food for the wedding ourselves. We’re definitely enlisting the help of our family and friends! It seemed like a great money saving option. But now that we’re less than 5 months out, I’m starting to FREAK out about the logistics involved in doing it on our own. Aside from having to do the actual cooking, there’s also the problem of how it’s going to be served and who would be doing that. Also, we don’t have chaffing dishes and warmers and all the things necessary to keep the food the correct temperature… This list of variables is endless.

That is why Mr. Hottie and I decided to hire a caterer. Although this seems like a total budget-buster for us, we had a plan. I’ve learned through planning so far that most vendors will deviate slightly from their norm in order to accommodate your budget.

I called a few places and was shocked at the initial prices…

Holy buckets! I knew catering was a pricey deal, but I had NO idea what to expect!

After calling several vendors, I was starting to get very disheartened. Maybe this wasn’t going to be in the cards for us. So I put it on the back burner for a few days.

Yesterday we were having Easter dinner together and it hit me like a baked potato - why not see if we could get our favorite restaurant to cater? Did they even offer that? After a quick call and a major Happy Dance, we had our answer. AND our caterer! Wanna see who it is??

Oh man, I love me some good ol’ Texas Roadhouse! I could literally eat there every day and not get tired of it. Why hadn’t I thought of this before? Everyone knows how much we like this food, so it’s only fitting. :) Now we’ll get the awesome grilled steaks and fixings we love, and so will our guests!

Now that I’ve got THAT monster off my back, it’s on to something more fun… SHOPPING!

Did you have a wedding issue to which the answer was right under your nose??

What a great idea to have your wedding catered by the Texas Roadhouse. Whenever we visit my parents in Denver, we go… it’s so delicious!

I’m glad that this worked out for you. What do you like about TR? How reasonable was it?

We are doing our own food (well, we’re planning it but we’ve got several people helping out the day of…I told my mother she’s not allowed to step foot in the kitchen!), but what an awesome idea! Will have to check out Texas Roadhouse for the rehearsal dinner!

I’m so so scared to go meet with a caterer. We might be having subway cater with one of those really longggggggggg sandwiches, lol! But your food looks amazing and will probably taste better than a lot of traditional wedding food! Congrats!

I met with a few caterers and their prices seemed so uncertain. I tried to get them to give me an amount per person and they didn’t seem willing. The I heard Johnny Carino’s catered and they were so easy to work with. I gave her a price per person and she totally worked with it. They even cut the wedding cake!

Yum! That looks so good! Another good idea for people looking for budget catering is to check with your local supermarket.

Q: How will the wine bottles on each table get opened?
Obvious A it took months to grok: ALL of the groom’s cousins have been fine dining servers.
