Mr. Starfish hasn’t had many requests for the wedding other than not wanting to wear a tux. He also really wanted a cake topper featuring real people. So, I have been searching for the perfect “people topper” for over a year. At the beginning of last year, I was reading a bridal magazine and I saw a Lladro topper. I had never heard of Lladro until I met Mr. Starfish. FMIL Starfish has been collecting Lladro since she bought her first piece on her honeymoon with FFIL Starfish in St. Maarten, just over thirty years ago. When I saw the Lladro topper, I thought it was perfect. It is beautiful and it would be kind of sentimental.
Then I looked it up online… I didn’t realize how expensive Lladro is! There are two I found on the site that are absolutely beautiful, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend that kind of money.
Lladro’s Together Forever and The Happiest Day:
A couple of months into the engagement, Starfish Mom surprised us with “The Happiest Day” as an engagement present (after scouring eBay and scoring an awesome deal!). It was my favorite because the groom is wearing khakis and a navy blazer!
It arrived and we were super excited, until we opened the box. The figurine is HUGE! I think it would sink if we attempted to use it as a cake topper. I think you’d need a large, sturdy cake to pull this off… so we were back to the drawing board. We decided we’ll display this with our guest book, or sweetheart table. But we continued on our search for the perfect cake “people topper”.
Then one night on my commute home, while flipping through the newest Brides magazine, I came up with people topper number 2. WeddingStar has a topper that is completely us.
Remind you of anything? Yeah, it reminds me of our proposal, too. The only problem? The bride is blonde, and I’m brunette. I was hoping for two brunette cake people. So I did some searching, and I couldn’t find the True Romance Couple (name of the topper) with a brunette bride anywhere for sale, but I did find the frame below with my dream topper, yet it’s not for sale anywhere on WeddingStar’s site. It actually says only blonde bride for sale.
I decided to contact the website, and I’m waiting to hear back. If that doesn’t work, I’ll be purchasing a blonde bride and giving her a little dye job.
Anyone else have trouble finding the perfect “people topper”? They seem more and more rare these days, but the Starfishies still love them.

We’re spending a fortune and going the custom route by having mudcards on etsy make us a topper! It will also feature our two cats ;o)
That is a really cute topped! i must say that I’m really kinda glad you didn’t get the llardo one…..i may have cried a little (not really, but on the inside maybe) if you would have put it on a cake, lol. I like the one that you found way better anyways! it seems like it fits you more.
That topper is adorable! I hope you find a brunette one 
Having worked in a collectibles store for longer than I care to admit, I want to point out there’s a branch of Lladro called “Nao by Lladro,” which is essentially the same style of figurine, for half–or sometimes a third–of the price.
That being said, man, your dream topper is really worth searching for. Good luck!
We purchased a Willow Tree figurine while on a road trip. I had thoughts of using it as a cake topper, but just like Miss Starfish I think it will be too big for our cake. So now I’m planning on having it on the table beside the cake and using flowers (hydrangeas) as our cake topper.
The Llardo figurines are beautiful! Neither my fiance or I are big “collectors”, but both of our mothers have Willow Tree colletions so we found it rather fitting to start our own collection. They have really sweet ones such as a pregnant momma, daddy with baby, etc.
I LOVE Lladro too, but yea they are really pricey! Be careful if you do display it at your reception that it doesnt get broken, or “go missing”!! We looked for people toppers too, but in the end we decided to go DIY route, and are making a beaded crystal/twig garland wreath with the initial of his (and my new) last name.
We are using people toppers. Be a bi-racial couple I fell in love with the interchangeable toppers - so are toppers will actually represent us.
We are in the same boat. We would love a people cake topper, but can’t find any that have a blond groom and a dark-haired bride! I also haven’t found anyone on Etsy that offers the traditional wedding topper look. Can’t wait to hear how this goes for you! Please keep us updated!
Just so you know, we used a Nao by Lladro as our cake topper (about the same size or taller than “The Happiest Day” and it not only looked amazing on the cake, it wasn’t too big or heavy. I think cake makers put a separate support under the topper to make sure it doesn’t sink into the cake, so it isn’t a big deal what the size of the topper is (unless it is a bowling ball or something). I had been worried our topper was going to be too big, but it worked out amazing. Just something to keep in mind! The Weddingstar topper is also very very cute too!
Your topper is adorable, and so what if you have to do a little repainting? One of our friends offered to make us a custom topper, and I am SO excited for it! It’s going to be the two little robots from Portal 2; they hold hands and are oh-so-innocent and cute! Mr. Jelly also specifically requested a people-topper! He doesn’t even like the Naked Peggies, he thinks they’re not life like enough!

We nixed people toppers because we’re the same height, and it seemed like we could only find way shorter brides. :p
Our toppers are a secret at present.
Could you just place the Ladro figurine next to the cake?

My parents ran into a bigger problem when ordering people toppers. There were not interracial couples. 25 years ago the closest they could get was purchasing two toppers and reconnecting them. The orchards on top of their cake was the perfect alternative for them. Good luck on your perfect people toppers 
i like that topper! i won’t be using a people topper for us but i do hope you’re able to find the brunette one!
Could you perhaps get the blonde one and paint the hair brunette?
