Woes of a Sunblock Snob

April 6th, 2010 @ 2:41 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Spring is in full bloom, and summer approaches quickly from behind. What does this mean? Well it means us summer brides and grooms are getting married soon! But it also means we’ll be needing more of this:

Sunscreen. Sure, to protect my skin, I am supposed to wear it anytime I’m outdoors - but on a (hopefully) bright day, in a reflective white dress, closer to the equator than usual - I say sun-guard is required rather than recommended.

The only problem? I hate sunscreen. The smell, the oil, the chalky color. You know what I’m talking about, childhood tormentors:

Mom or Dad would slap ten gallons of the white, greasy stuff to your face and arms, leaving your pores suffocating in the chemical bath. Then you’d jump into the pool, only to have it wash off and invade your eyes, a mixture of sunscreen and chlorine to burn out your retinas.

After complaining about the standard stock, Mom took pity on you and bought you some of the fancy spray-on kind.

Only it burned like the plague after you applied it to your newly-shaved, 13 year old legs. And it left you looking like a well-oiled body builder, minus the muscles. And it still smelled.

So you went without. And ten minutes later, you transformed into a grade-A, boiled lobster.

You were burnt so badly that boils started appearing on your shoulders, chest and back - depriving you of sleep since even breathing was an excruciating task.

I think it’s safe to assume I will need some protection. But do I have to live with the sunblock smell in order to stay rare and not well-done?

First, what is needed to protect against sun damage? You can find a lot of information online, like this article from UCSF.

Basically, you want a sunblock that blocks both UV-A and UV-B rays, with a fairly high SPF. The SPF number isn’t the number of minutes you can stay in the sun, however. Rather, it’s a rough multiplier. If it takes you ten minutes to burn without sunblock, using an SPF 40 sunblock will increase the time it takes you to burn to 400 minutes. Roughly, I say. Because if you splash around in the pool or rub it off, obviously you will need to re-apply before 400 minutes. But generally speaking, the higher the SPF, the better. And in my case, it should be over 9,000!

I’ve tried a number of different lotions in order to find one that meets both the protection requirements as well as my own no-stinky-sunscreen wish. So far, my favorite has been Neutrogena’s dry-touch sunblock.

The smell isn’t so bad, and it does a good job. It still gives my face the pallor of the undead, though, so I’m always on the look-out for something new.

What’s your sun-guard of choice? Any recommendations of non-smelly types I could try?

I’m really pale and allergic to most of the ingredients in traditional sunscreen, so I use Blue Lizard. I love the stuff!

I LOVE this stuff! I have the SPF 75 or 80 and I use it daily! Best part is that it doesn’t break me out.

oh, neutrogena! I love thee!
I’m pretty pale - but I basically refuse to wear sunblock unless it’s that dry-touch stuff! Have you tried rubbing it in more?
Mr. BC makes fun of me for my snobbery of sunblocks ;)

They just came out with a Neutrogena for faces. I tried it and it is AMAZING! Feels like you are wearing nothing at all after it soaks in. It is expensive, but so much better than sunscreen sheen on my face.

I like that Neutrogena Sunscreen a lot - it absorbs well, and doesn’t make me feel sticky or gross.

Something to consider - SPF can act reflective in photos, causing you to appear even paler. You may want to try to use the lowest SPF that will prevent you from becoming a lobster so you don’t end up too washed out in pictures.

Try the Nutrogena Ultra Sheer spray! It’s the best!

I like Sport sunblock, the spray kind. It smells while you spray it on, but then goes away immediately. I don’t have to rub it in, and it works. I’m a Snow White, so I have road-tested a few sunblocks in my day, and it’s my fave. :)

There is a new class of sunscreen that are physical sun blockers instead of chemical and tend to be less smelly and less irritating to skin. Plus they don’t have to be applied 30 min. ahead like chemical sunscreens. They come in both powder and lotion form. I like the bare essentials mineral sunblock for a powder form and neutrogena has a good mineral sunscreen in liquid form.

I have to say I love the Neutrogena. I am a camp counselor in the summer, and this stuff has saved my skin multiple times.

My face does not like sunscreen! It burns especially when I sweat! - NO FUN.

SO… I’ve found that Clinique’s face SPF feels just fine! So I splurge on that. I know SEphora also sells a “natural” line of sunscreen options. You could try that! I forget the brand..

I was going to suggest the Neutragena then I saw you already found it. It’s my personal favorite, and it does come in the spray now, which is nice.

Someone mentioned the physical vs chemical barrier– wouldn’t that make you even more pasty, especially in a flash? I’d test drive whatever you are putting on your face with a flash camera just in case. No ghost faces in your wedding photos!

I use Mary Kay products, and I use their face SPF every day. It dissappears on my face, no oily residue, no smell, and doesn’t mess up my makeup (I apply it first, then moisterizer, then makeup). For the rest of my body I am also a Neutrogena believer.

I like to layer my SPFs for my face. Maybe instead of going the actual sunblock route for your face and neck, use a mosturizer with SPF, then add foundation with SPF and top it off with a powder that has an SPF (yep, I have all of them!).

Oh, your post could have been written by me. One time I chose to “go without” and I received second degree burns on my legs. I learned my lesson.

I have sunscreen allergies to top of my miserable existence, so I have tried a million brands. Until I found the ONE:

Banana Boat SPORT Dri-Block on my body, and Coppertone Oil Free “Faces” sunscreen for my face. The Dri-Block goes on like a cream, but dries like powder. You don’t even realize you are wearing sunscreen at all. It’s fantastic! I used SPF 30 for both.

Neutrogena is a a great brand. My father is a dermatologist and he gives myself and all his patients Cetaphil. They just came out with a 50 SPF face moisturizer that does not grease up your face what-so-ever. The smell is neutral, and being an oily-faced girl that lives in Florida, I wear it everyday and love it. Not to mention it doesn’t cause break-outs =)

well…as a brown skinned woman, I don’t have to worry about burning AS much - however! I do have the same issue with Mosquito repellant as I am allergic to bug bites and my ceremony is outdoors in the summer! I have been thinking of the same criteria..something that won’t let off a terrible stench, won’t make me feel oily, won’t sting me, but most importantly, will do the trick…hmmm
