Anything is game for this shindig, for it is all about us! Watch out, y’all, and try to keep up!
About Mrs. Scissors

It’s true.

I've Stopped Reading Wedding Blogs. : wedding emotional georgia Untitle07 Untitle07

I stopped reading them because it had gotten to a point of mild obsession––refreshing my reader every 4 seconds to see what delightful wedding-candy would be brought forth. I suffered from OMGIWANTTHATTOO-itis.

“WAIT, I CAN PUT LITTLE FLAGS ON EVERYTHING THAT WILL STAY STILL LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO APPLY GLUE? WAIT, THERE ARE GLUE REPLACEMENTS NOW?”

“I feel so insignificant.”

“OMG THIS REAL WEDDING IS SOO PERFECT. I AM IN LOVE.”

“Why can’t I pull off stellar things like that?”

“OMG EVERYONE LOOKS LIKE A SUPERMODEL. GAH, THEY ARE SO GORGEOUS.”

“Why am I still eating, again?”

“OMG BRIDESMAIDS IN LOUBS AND MARCHESA?!”

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to settle on any ideas. I feel like a fail-bride.”

As you can see, OMGIWANTTHATTOO-itis turned into self-imposed failbride-itis. All of these beautiful weddings, half-or-more of them staged, were screwing with my psyche. (Truth be told, they still do.) How can one girl planning one wedding who has no experience at all live up to this giant cloud of fantastic? Seeing inspiration shot after inspiration shot after inspiration shot after inspiration shot… It just got to be too much for me. I needed to feel good and solid about what I was doing––no, what we were doing to make our wedding fabulous, fantastic, and us.

In planning a wedding, trying to graduate, trying to put on a ginormous senior exit show, and just trying to be a functioning human being, I realized that there was no room for the pretty anymore. I couldn’t lust after everyone else’s pretty and be unhappy with my own.

So I stopped. Cold turkey. My Google Reader has been abandoned for the most part—I only read things in my “real bride bloggers” section. From that I gain a feeling of, “Thank God. I’m not alone in being totally freaking stressed out. Weddings aren’t all ponies and rainbows all the time. It’s okay that I’m not a fairy princess.” I have all of the inspiration I need. It’s been time to get down to brass tacks. This has saved me so much sanity, so much money, and let’s face it, so much time.

Helpful as they were to me in the months before the “real planning” began––showing me what bananas things could be done at events, not everything was a cookie-cutter wedding that I abhorred, etc.––I now tend to only get pangs of guilt and unworthiness from reading them.

I will stay true to my aesthetic, our vision, and our hopes and crazy dreams for this wedding.

So, I’m sorry gorgeous wedding inspiration blogs. It’s not you, it’s me. I’m just on a hiatus from drooling over your photo shoots and grandeur for the time being. I’ll be back soon, promise.

I guess that’s enough wedding blasphemy for one day.

Who else has had to cut back on reading wedding inspiration blogs (or even magazines, for that matter)? Are you at the point in planning where it is doing more harm than good, or am I just an indecisive-and-overly-obsessive freakazoid?

I’m way out and still pretty obsessed with weddingbee but try to avoid stylemepretty and other more “professional” and insanely hard to live up to on a real life budget sites. No offense, stylemepretty, I love you too, but you are like Heidi Klum and I am, like, a real regular person. ;-)

I quit too. I think there just comes a time. I’m too busy freaking out right now to feast on perfect wedding images and cool new ideas. Done Done Done (well, except the Bee…)

Couldn’t agree more. It was when I freaked out about having a candy bar (because if we do that I have to design cute bags, and label each jar in a stunning motif, and color coordinate all of the candy…and…and) that I said enough is enough. The images are beautiful, but they go so beyond what my FI and I consider essential to our big day…so no more for this girl, either!

I’m actually in the other boat. My wedding blog reading has ramped up over the past month, and I’m about to get married! 17 days! All I can think about now is weddings, and I’ve definitely fallen victim to updating my reader every 4 seconds to see what new and exciting post has popped up. I enjoy comparing what I’ve come up with (which is now pretty well set in stone) to what other brides have come up with. It’s fun to see how every bride is a little bit different. Granted, it can be challenging to see how perfect other weddings appear and not worry about my own. But, for the most part I’m happy with my stuff, and I’m just counting down the days until I get to see all of my hard work come together!

I think that’s a great idea. I never read the super stylized wedding blogs - all the ones I read are about “real” brides. The other ones just stress me out.

i could never handle the super styley ones, and i’ve (to some point) stopped adding more real-bride blogs to my reader, but i love reading the ones I’ve got so far! it’s satisfying to see people work their wedding through to completion! but yeah,I also definitely don’t need any more inspiration!

I stopped, too, once I started writing here. It was too much to take in and still be able to focus on my own wedding!

I haven’t stopped by I really should. It’s under two months now, so I don’t really have time to implement new pieces of inspiration. But they’re all so pretty.

Ugh - I totally relate. I had to give up all my bridal blogs (except Weddingbee, of course!) for the same reason.

I know, its bad, I still can’t quit and I am married. And the guilt still creeps up like “oh, why didn’t I have my photog get that picture!”

BEST. POST. EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Every now and then, I start feeling like this and delete a bunch of the blogs in my reader. A few weeks later, they start creeping back in, one by one. I’m with you - I think it’s time for another purge.

Slowly giving them up here, as well. They were fun to look at before I started all my ‘real’ planning - now they’re just plain overwhelming.

I need to stay focused on what WE want for OUR wedding - not what a photoshoot on stylemepretty makes me think I want for a price we could never afford (although those weddings sure are beautiful!) Ah, crap.

Um… amen? Right down to the senior show part!

I went through and edited my Google Reader when I started writing for Weddingbee. I just don’t have time for it all anymore! I only read our vendors’ blogs now. And Weddingbee. And Style Me Pretty… because I just can’t stop. I’m sorry. :)

@Miss Turtle: Inspired by this post, I JUST removed SMP from my google reader. It was hard, but I think it’ll be good for me :)

Put your blinders on and stay true to YOUR vision…your wedding will be lovely, can’t wait to read about it!

I cannot quit them! I am so envious your cold-turkeyness! I just can’t– It is like crack for me! I don’t want any of it anymore, but I can’t quit looking!

(Yes, this is problematic b/c I have 3 twenty-page papers due in a month. Wedding pr0n is so much more fun than depressing Irish and Russian plays!)

I have been slowly detaching myself as well. I quit getting magazines about 5 months out, quit reading wedding idea websites about 4 months out, stopped searching on google for cake and decor ideas about a month ago & and I’m currently weening myself away from wedding blogs (with the excption of this one…) It’s hard, i want to see everyone’s pretty ideas.. but then I want to make them part of my day.. I agree, there has to come a time where enough is enough!!!

I can’t do them either. Not because I don’t like to look, but because I start to feel bad about how I won’t be able to do something that wonderful for $10k.

But you know what, it will be ok. And with all the reading I have done, it will be *WAAAAY* more chic than most of my guest are used to…

I still read, but all these perfect (albeit mostly staged) weddings are giving me a total complex! I’ve got to stop.
