Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!

My Top 10 DIY Projects

April 7th, 2010 @ 12:50 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

With less than 5 months until the wedding, I’ve been thinking about what things I plan to DIY for our wedding. I have a feeling these will change (read: I will nix some of them due to time contraints/laziness), but for now, here is my current list of DIY projects:

1. Save the Dates: Done! I don’t know if having your friend design them and then printing them online counts as DIY, but I think they fit into this category.

2. Favors: As of now, we plan to buy $1 Lotto scratchers, put them in glassine envelopes along with a penny, and seal them with a custom sticker. This seems like a pretty easy project to me!

3. Fan programs: I have been drooling over these since the moment I saw them a year ago. I think this will definitely be one of the more time-consuming projects but I love the way they look and they will be perfect for our outdoor September ceremony!

4. OOT Bags: I already purchased the reusable bags from Target (25 cents each, woot!). I plan to fill them with the usual goodies, as well as some San Francisco-specific items, like Ghirardelli chocolate squares. I’m going to have to wait until it’s closer to the wedding to fill them though, as I don’t want any of the food items to expire.

5. Table numbers: I’ve always liked the idea of doing black & white (or sepia) photos of us at whatever age it says on the table number.

6. Bathroom baskets: This should be pretty simple too. I just need to find the perfect baskets, and hit up Target for the bathroom essentials.

7. Candy Buffet: Mama is in charge of finding the various glass containers (Marshall’s and TJ Maxx are great places to go for these). Then I need to decide what kind of candy we want, buy it in bulk and make labels for the containers.

8. Menus: Although I could order these with the invites, I think I’d rather save some money and do these myself. I found a cute grape stamp at Paper Source that I might use as the motif for the menus.

9. Wine charm place cards: blogged about here.

10. Wine cork escort cards: blogged about here. Unless, of course, I decide to just order the personalized ones.

So at this point, you might be wondering: what are you NOT doing yourself? I am not planning on DIYing my invitations. Or, if I do, it will be more semi-DIY—think Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee-style. I might order basic invites and then embellish them a bit myself to make them look fancier. I am not DIYing our guestbook, as it comes with our photographer’s package. I am also not DIYing the flowers, with the exception that I might (but probably won’t) try to DIY the bridesmaids bouquets. My friend Lauren did all the flowers for her wedding and they came out so nicely that it made me think I could at least do the bouquets. I don’t have it in me to do centerpieces, though. Not for a 200 person wedding! I’m also going to TRY not to incorporate too many small DIY projects beyond the above list. I’ve heard of brides making everything from napkins for the wedding to individual packets of tissue for each guest to use during the ceremony. While I think those things are cute, for the sake of my own sanity I need to cut it off somewhere.

What about you? What are you DIYing for your wedding? What did you decide to BIY (Buy it Yourself My Top 10 DIY Projects : wedding decor diy pleasanton stationery Icon Sm052 :) ) instead?

I’m so afraid to itemize our DIY list, just because I know it is colossal. I’m on the “one day at a time” plan. :p

I agree with Miss Scissors, you are braver than I am. I can’t wait to see how all of your details come out though! I’ve actually never heard of the Lottery ticket favor. The picture, with that sticker, is so good! Love it.

I’m currently stressing about our DIY list! We are finishing up the aforementioned fan programs right now. They are pretty challenging, but I think they’ll look great!

We just finished maps for the invites, and a billion little bows and ribbons to tie the package together.

I’m also making: wine glasses for my BMs, BM “survival kits,” escort cards, bouquet holders, tissue packets for the ceremony, and I hope not too many more things ;oP

I can’t stop with the DIY projects. I need to sit down and figure out how long each will take me and the priority of each and then if I have to remove some from my list I will (even though I don’t want to). My first one I am going to start to tackle is going to be the coffee filter pom pom’s.

@hotchildinthecity: Do you have any tips on the fan programs? Where did you get your cardstock?

we’re doing the age-picture-table-numbers too! I think that’s one of the cutest ideas ever.

So far I have DIYed save the dates, invitations, escort cards, guest book, favors, entire ceremony, and my vows to my future hubby. Still on my DIY to-do list: programs, centerpieces (I did a mock up and they’re pretty easy), card box, and finding a way to get shepherd’s hooks to stand up in buckets and be sturdy enough to hold double pomanders (which are the one thing I splurged on - thank you Etsy!). My wedding is in 17 days. Eeek!

wow you are a DIY-ing machine!

I designed our STDs, invites, thank you cards, rehearsal dinner invites, programs and a poster (instead of a guest book). I’ll probably DIY the escort cards too but have someone calligraphy the names. My mom and I also want to make table runners and I also have to design something that mentions the donation we are making in lieu of a gift. Ok writing all this stuff down is stressing me out!

Umm, I’m scared to itemize my DIY list. It’s very, very long.

I’m doing the fan programs too! I feel I took on WAY too much DIY as well: Invites, Menu Cards, Escort cards, Table numbers, programs, Cookie Favors, cookie/ desert table, entry/ escort table decor, drink special cards, bar decor… but I’m sure I will be happy that I didn’t spend the money having someone else do it, and my experience can help me to start a side business when I’m done! Hope you don’t stress too much about your DIY!

I think you list looks really doable!

I’m with a lot of the others: I’m not making a list because it is pretty large (and mostly dependent on Mr. Snow).

I wish we’d had the forethought to stop and make a ranked list of DIY projects instead of basically saying “Let’s DIY it all!!”
