The Wrong Box

April 7th, 2010 @ 2:08 pm by Mrs. Hamster

Today I had a bit of a stressful moment. Let me explain.

My first dress fitting is this weekend. I had planned for my mom and sister to go with me - we had made an appointment that worked with everyone’s schedule, and my dad was going to stay home and babysit my nephew. The plan was set, and I was happy (set plans do that to me).

Lest this be a simple story, let me further elaborate. When I had purchased my dress, I had it shipped to New Jersey; however, I live in New York. Well, my parents went to pick it up from my doorman today and it. was. ginormous. Wedding dresses can be voluminous, but this is how my mom described it:

The Wrong Box : wedding dress nyc Mymom1 mymom

My Mom

The Wrong Box : wedding dress nyc Thewron1 thewron

My Mom and the Wedding Dress box.

Any questions?

My older sister had her wedding 5 years ago and also had a huge dress box - but it was not THAT huge. Perplexed but determined, my parents drove back to their house with the box hanging out of our family’s Honda Accord trunk (and secured by my dad’s belt in a pinch. Thanks, dad!).

After dragging the box back into the house, my mom called me and said that due to the ginormousness of the box, she and my sis probably couldn’t handle bringing it down to New York. So, the NEW plan was that my dad would drive with my sister and the giant box in the backseat, but my mom would stay home and babysit. I was so disappointed - I really wanted my mom to be there! But what can you do when you have a ginormous box? Nothing.

Wait, it gets better. 20 minutes later, my doorman calls my Mom and yup, you got it. THEY GAVE HER THE WRONG BOX. My parents rushed back over to my apartment building (after loading the huge box back into the trunk) and exchanged it for a much smaller, normal-sized box.

Dress rescued, Plan A back on, and nobody got hurt.

Moral of the story?

  1. Check your packages before you accept them.
  2. And hug my parents if you see them. They deserve it.

Did you have any stressful moments that worked themselves out?

Ahaha, love the visuals!

Yesterday I noticed we had a package notice on our door so I knew we had gifts waiting at the front office. So I went down and their whole storage room was filled with five boxes for us. Like 3′ x 3′ or 3′ x 4′ size boxes. I felt kind of embarassed because they had to wait for me while I carried them each up one at a time to our apartment and then came down for another. And the best part was that each box had such a small box inside, like maybe 1′ x 1′. So funny!

OMG that is crazy!!!!!!!!! LOL
Kleinfelds said they could ship my dress to NJ where I live to save on tax and such but since the tax just went down in NY when I bought it, I would have only saved like $100 after paying for it to be shipped - I said it wasn’t worth it because I would me a MESS with my dress out there in the world. Glad your dress is safe Hammy :)

Whoa, that box visual is hilarious. You’re lucky to have parents that will go above and beyond for you. Sounds like my parents, too. :)

Ha! That’s so crazy! Now that is a wedding box! Glad your mom doesn’t have to sit out now, thanks to the much more normal sized box. :)

That is so funny. I can’t totally see the panic happening when your mom arrived to see the giant box. Did you find out whose dress was in the giant box? Might be an opportunity to meet a new neighboor!

Glad they figured it out. My dress came in the wrong size, luckily I ordered far enough in advance, so the store is having the designer cut the correct size. But it was super stressful in the begining!
