Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Beatlemania with a Ukulele

April 8th, 2010 @ 7:22 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Sister Guinea Pig is an awesome musician, and I’m pretty excited to have her take part in the ceremony not just as my maid-of-honor, but also by singing a song! Not only does she blow me out of the water with her piano-playing skills (we both took lessons for years and years as kids, however by the time she was in 7th grade she could practically sight-read the pieces I was practicing!), but since she headed off to music college a few years ago, she has also picked up guitar, double bass, harmonica, ukulele, and I’m sure several other instruments I’m forgetting.

So now you understand my excitement when Sister GP agreed to sing a piece for our ceremony - and not just that, but she’s going to accompany herself on the ukulele! Amazing.

Now it has come down to what song she’s going to sing. Sister GP sent us a list of great song options - she really favored an Elvis tune (such as Can’t Help Falling In Love With You, or Love Me Tender), but it turns out Mr. Guinea Pig is not an Elvis fan! We quickly came to the conclusion that we should do a Beatles song, because the Beatles hold a lot of meaning for Mr. GP and me Sister GP scoured the Beatles’ millions of songs for any that would be good wedding-y and on the ukulele, then sent me a list of options aptly titled Beatlemania.

This is where we find ourselves needing your help. :) We all have different preferences: Mr. GP has his favorites, I have mine, and Sister GP probably still wishes we were using an Elvis song!

Here are the options we’re considering — which song do you think would work best in a ceremony, keeping in mind that my sister will be singing by herself? Are we missing the perfect Beatles song?

Option A:

Option B:

Option C:

Option D:

Option E:

Other songs that might work but we personally have ruled out: Do You Want to Know a Secret, Eight Days a Week, and From Me to You.

Help us please! Which do you like?

Would you think it’s weird to have a Beatles song in the middle of the ceremony? Is anyone else having a non-classical song in their ceremony (i.e., not Ave Maria or what-have-you)? What did you choose?

We’re recessional-ing (wtf?) to All You Need Is Love. Big Beatles fan here!

But to the question at hand:

* Option A: I Will: the favorite if you prefer something cool and sweet. More wedding-y for sure.
* Option D: Got To Get You Into My Life: I LOVE this song. But will she be able to sing it on her own? Seems difficult, but I gots no skillz in this arena.

we’re having a Beatles song in the middle of our ceremony! one of the BM’s will be singing “Til there was you” and playing acoustic guitar during the middle of the ceremony :) Another good one you might consider is “two of us”… all of our processional and recessional songs are also Beatles… acoustic versions of: “across the universe” (bridesmaids entrance), “blackbird” (my entrance) and “here comes the sun” (recessional). We’re also doing “in my life” for the father/daughter/mother/son dance.

Have you heard Paul McCartney singing “Something” at the Concert for George (memorial concert for George Harrison at Royal Albert Hall)? It’s accompanied by ukulele and it’s amazing!

Here There and Everywhere was the processional song at my first marriage. And while that marriage did not last, the song is still my absolute favorite and I sing it w/guitar any chance I get! I am getting married again in 2012, and while I do not plan to use that song in the ceremony itself, I do plan to sing it later that night at the campfire. Is absolutely beautiful and easy on the vocal chords which is great for when you are nervous.

My dad had one of his friends sing “Here, There, and Everywhere” (and accompany himself on the acoustic guitar) at my parents’ wedding. It was really beautiful.

My daughter is having John Lennon’s Grow Old Along With Me as the solo.

I voted for option D: I Want to Hold Your Hand! But I honestly love them all… I am a “Beatles Bride” too and there are so many great songs to choose from! We are debating between “In My Life” and “Here Comes the Sun” for the processional. love it love it!

i’m a huge, huge, huge beatles fan. they hold more significance for me and my dad, which is why that will be our father/daughter dance. but for your sister singing, i vote for “i will”. it can be really pretty with a female voice. have you ever heard alison krauss’s rendition of it. beautiful and simple. i could just see it being part of your wedding. she sings with banjo accompaniment and it’s great.

and i normally am VERY critical of beatles covers, so me recommending it means i think she really blows it out of the water. :)

Our recessional was “Here Comes the Sun” which is one of my favorite Beatles songs. It also sounds lovely on classical guitar.

My vote would be for one that is not listed… “Blackbird.” Just listen to the Sarah McLachlin version, and you may be convinced, too. I think the lyrics are perfect, too. My second choice would be “I will,” and third would be “In my life.”

I love all those choices and do not think it would be weird at all! My vote is for “I Will.”

All great choices, but I think “I Will” will sound awesome a capella :)

Where is Mrs. Dumpling?? She’s the biggest Beatles fan and would be a way better help than I could ever be when it comes to picking out Beatles songs, lol!

I think that’s such a great idea. Our church won’t allow secular music, but I would have loved to have “In My Life” somewhere. Speaking of Beatles and ukulele, though, I thought you might enjoy this video:

And my personal ukulele favorite by this kid (Jason Mraz song):

When I was MOH for my sister’s wedding I sang “I will” as their first dance song. It holds a special place in my heart.
